WELCOME MESSAGES

Breast milk is indisputably the only and best food for baby under 6 months. More than that, breast milk is not just food, it has so many non-nutritive values, range from immunology and immune-defense benefits, endocrine and genetic aspects, growth and development of healthy body including brain and gastrointestinal, and emotional-psychological-spiritual aspects, micro-macroeconomical and environmental advantages, and also life-long benefit for prevention of malignancy and chronic diseases, both for baby and mother. In the world filled with inequality, crises and poverty, breastfeeding is the foundation of lifelong good health for babies and mothers. It should be ascertained to all mother and her surroundings including the health workers, that breastfeeding is the best and normal way for a mother in caring, feeding, transitioning her off-springs in their early life. To be breastfed is a right for a baby, not an option.

There are still many barriers in supporting mothers to successfully breastfeed their children. Some of them are the lack of knowledge and unsupportive attitude and practices towards breastfeeding by the health professionals, who are supposed to be the first frontliners in leading the breastfeeding culture and in setting a baby-friendly environment at the earliest possible moment. Therefore, to help strengthening and improving the health professionals support in breastfeeding, Indonesian Pediatric Society (IPS)/IDAI East Java Branch in collaboration with Breastfeeding Task Force IPS proudly organizes and presents the 2nd Surabaya Breastfeeding Symposium, with theme “Supporting Successful Breastfeeding: Priming the Foundation of life”, adapting the slogan of World Breastfeeding Week 2018.

Speakers invited are breastfeeding experts and pediatric practitioners from national and international, who will share their experience and knowledge on updated breastfeeding science, about breastfeeding situation and support in Indonesia, about breastfeeding problems in mother and infant and in daily practice, and concerns on breastmilk production. In this symposium we also add the Interactive Case Study sessions so that the participants could experience in-depth learning and interactive discussion about technical and practical issues about breastfeeding.
