SACRAMENT OF FORGIVENESS

(Penance, Reconciliation, Confession) Saturday from 4:00pm-4:30pm

Or at any other time By Appointment

BLESSED SACRAMENT CHAPEL

ALWAYS OPEN FOR PRAYER & ADORATION

At morning Mass on Jan. 21st, while reflecting on the First Reading and the responsorial psalm, Pope Francis suggested that we can become holy by guarding the gifts God gave us so gratuitously. Recalling today’s readings, the Pope highlighted how no one can buy the gifts of the Lord, since He gives them to us freely, not based on our own merits. Stressing that being Christian, or being priest or bishop, are gifts from the Lord, he warned that seeking favors to have one’s career grow in the Church, is not Christian. The Holy Father asked those present to reflect on the great gift they have received, of being Christian. He invited those present to reflect on their own presence at Mass saying “why did the Lord choose us?” Not because we come from a Christian family or a Christian culture,” in fact, he said, many such people end up rejecting the Lord. Pointing out the gratuitousness of God’s choice, the Pope spoke also of how priests and bishops have received their anointment for free. “There are, yes, those who want to go ahead in the so-called ecclesiastical careers, who behave in a simonical way, seeking influences, becoming climbers,” he said, but he pointed out that that is not the Christian way. “Being Christian, being baptized, being ordained priests and bishops is pure gratuitousness. You can’t buy the Lord’s gifts,” he said. The Holy Father spoke about how we can “be holy.” Christian holiness, Pope Francis went on to say, is “to preserve the Lord’s gift, nothing more”, behaving in such a way that the Lord always remains with us. The Pontiff criticized the attitude of those who “aim to climb the ladder” of a career in the Church, underscoring that to be anointed a bishop is a gift. Francis urged Christians to live with humility, thus guarding God’s gift of having chosen us. And he spoke of the great gift of the Holy Spirit saying: “When the Lord elected us, He gave us the Holy Spirit. And that’s pure grace.” The Pope warned Christians never to forget the people of God. “If we priests forget our flock, if we bishops forget this and feel more important than others,” he noted, “we deny God’s gift.” “It’s like telling the Holy Spirit we can manage on our own,” he said, noting, “and that’s not Christian.” “That’s not guarding the gift,” the Pope said. He con-cluded, inviting faithful to ask the Lord today, “to give us

the grace to give thanks for the great and beautiful gift He has given us, and to preserve it with faithfulness.”

Jesus said, “Ask and you shall receive.” So, I’m asking for Six sopranos (women who can sing the melody line) to join the choir as soon as possible. This will involve a commitment to sing at the 9 am Mass and take part in Tuesday night rehearsals.

January National Glaucoma Awareness Month

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that can cause vision loss and blindness by damaging a nerve in the back of your eye called the optic nerve. Currently, more than 3 million people in the United States have glaucoma. The symptoms can start so slowly that you may not notice them. The only way to find out if you have glaucoma is to get a comprehensive dilated eye exam. There’s no cure for glaucoma, but early treatment can often stop the damage and protect your vision ( https://www.glaucoma.org/news/glaucoma-awareness-month.php). Care Giver Support Group St. Andrew’s first Care giver Support group will be held January 26th between the 9:00 and 11:45 mass in the McConnell room. If you would benefit from the support and encouragement of other caregivers, please join us.

Sacrificial Giving Annual Renewal

This year our Stewardship & Administration Commission has strongly recommended placing renewed emphasis on giving online or through automatic bank drafts. These methods allow everyone the opportunity to get the full benefits that come from tithing whether or not they are actually able to be in our church every Sunday. Think about it.

We are in the process of investigating the accuracy of the Sacrificial Giving figures published above. Two weeks ago, we were all caught up. Stand by for a clarification next week.

CONTINUING TO BUILD

A SAFE ENVIRONMENT

Circle of Grace and the Safe Environment Program have been designed to assist children and youth of all ages to know how to handle situations in which they may be vulnerable to abuse. The materials choose words and expressions carefully and sensitively on age appropriate levels so that young people can learn how to protect themselves and how to reach out to trusted adults for help. The presentation to the children is scheduled for January 26th during religious education classes.

SAFE ENVIRONMENT TRAINING Wednesday, Feb 5th at 6:30 pm

in the McConnell room

Do you have a child attending discipleship formation classes? Do you use the nursery? Do you want to be able to work with the youth of our parish? We are always looking for parents or other volunteers who can help with classes, lead small groups with the youth, chaperone youth events or volunteer in the nursery. We’ve had to cancel some of our youth nights because of a lack of certified and willing personnel. A principal requirement for any of these services is certification through the safe environment program. The training is short and to the point. Hope you can participate. Childcare will be available. Please contact Ann Grover to register or for more information.
