First Grade Standard that was covered in previous school year: W 1.3 Write narratives in which they recount two or more appropriately sequenced events, include some details regarding what happened, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide some sense of closure. This can used with the fables/folktales lessons. The students can write about the events in the fables/folktales and discuss the feeling that helped teach them the lessons.

First Grade Standard that was covered in previous school year: W 1.2 Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the topic, and provide some sense of closure. Use some of the nonfiction texts from your reading lessons and have the students report facts about something they learned about or compared. How to Writings would be good to introduce at this time if you believe your students are ready. You could center it around the holidays, How to Cook a Turkey, or even a letter from a turkey convincing the farmer not to kill it for Thanksgiving. They would have to state reasons and justify their reasons.

First Grade Standard that was covered in previous school year: RI 1.8 Identify the reasons an author gives to support points in a text. This is a great opportunity to use your units about the Winter holidays around the world or winter adaptation for animals. In the next three weeks, your students will write a research report over either a winter holiday, adaptations, etc. They will also use all the skills they have learned already this year to get their information and write a report giving specific points and publishing. Since this is a first attempt of a research project this year, you may want to consider having them work in a group of 3 or 4 students. They will need a lot of guidance in this process.
