Dear reader,

Thank you for attending this the second installment of our ‘The Caribbean and

You’ seminars under the CARIBDIRECT SEMINAR SERIES program. We have

realized through our work online and from our first seminar on the APD

(Air Passenger Duty) tax last November 2012 that there is a desperate need to

discuss socio-economic and cultural issues in the public domain. The main aim

of these seminars is to INFORM, EDUCATE and ENTERTAIN the vast

Caribbean Diaspora occupying these islands that make up the United Kingdom.

It is our fervent hope that you leave these seminars enriched and armed with

information and knowledge that can help you maneuver life’s challenges in the

UK and Caribbean more effectively. We sincerely hope you enjoy these discus-

sions as much as we enjoy putting them on for you.

Regards,

David F. Roberts

The Moderator Mr. Ron Belgrave

Ron has worked in both the public and private sectors in the UK having spent over 25 years in local and regional government and now having established his own media business (Sankofa Televisual).

His career and activity has covered many fields including immigration, youth work, oral history, equalities, hous-ing, transport and crime where, for some years, he was the most senior Black public official working on crime reduction policy for London.

Noting the alienation of young Black people in British society from the 1970s on-wards and the growing violence amongst the youth since the 1990s, Ron has been concerned about how the community sees itself, how young people develop their identity and the messages permeating through all forms of the media.

He ran the Southampton branch of the national year-long Caribbean Focus initiative in 1986, taught an adult education course in Caribbean history, was active on the board of the Kente organisation to build capacity in the Black voluntary sector and served as a governor of one of the largest primary schools in London.

In 2012 Ron also conducted the first ever nationwide (online) British Caribbean Television Survey where 98% of respondents wanted Caribbean programmes on TV in the UK, 80% felt that young people needed such programmes and 70% wanted a Caribbean TV station in Britain.

Passionate about the Caribbean and the progress of Black people at home and abroad – particularly economic strength – Ron is developing an infrastructure for helping TV programmes (especially dramas and other stories) from the Caribbean to be visible in other regions of the world.

This is because “you are what you watch” and “what you see is what you want” but also “what others see of you shapes how they judge you”!

About CaribDirect

CaribDirect is the only online portal in the United Kingdom and quite possibly the world, which focuses on bringing ALL Caribbean businesses and citizens together over the internet and offline for trade, strategic networking, specialist blogs and exposure to the latest business news bulletins affecting Caribbean communities and businesses around the world. Though the core of CaribDirect.com’s offering is business news gathering and dissemination to and from the Caribbean Diaspora around the world, the company engages in the following: 1. Staging Strategic Public Seminars every three months 2. Providing media and press support for Trade Missions to the Caribbean and Africa; and 3. Planning and implementation of high profile Caribbean cultural events:

CaribDirect is a full service media and marketing orientated online portal dedicated to enhancing the socio-economic and cultural dimensions of the global Caribbean community. Our sophisticated social media marketing program which feeds a number of dedicated Caribbean Facebook, Twitter and YouTube accounts ensures CaribDirect content reaches the right audience at the right time. CaribDirect’s experienced team of professionals have been in graphic design, marketing, administration, advertising and information technology for a combined period of over 100 years. This expertise is being used to assist entities such as UK based Caribbean High Commissions, Diaspora groups, Caribbean pageants (Miss Trinidad & Tobago UK and Miss Guyana UK), award ceremonies and so on to establish or enhance their presence on the internet and to engage with their respective audiences. With alliances with IROKOtv, Africa’s largest distributor of Nollywood movies; Colourful Radio, London’s most influential digital radio station; and New York based Carib PR, a division of Hard Beat Communications we are poised to be the most influential Caribbean owned and run online business, news and lifestyle organisation anywhere, in two years. Following a successful first Africa Meets the Caribbean trade mission to Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago (January 20th to 29th 2013), CaribDirect has begun to forge strategic alliances with key Caribbean businesses and the media for the sole purpose of increasing the visibility of the Caribbean Diaspora to the Caribbean while promoting trade and investment opportunities in the Caribbean. We believe our partnership with the Caribbean Enterprise Network (CENUK www.cenuk.net) facilitator of the Africa Meets the Caribbean trade mission and our community focused not for profit arm CCDA will be integral to that process.
