FILM FORM Architecture of Cinema

Series of analyses on the ‘spacial windows’ and ‘tectonic structures’ of a three minute film sequence from Hitchcock’s Marnie. The analyses is mainly focused on the perspectives within each shot and its relationship to the intensity portrayed in the plot. The drawing is an abstraction of the unfolding space in which the character of the film traveled. The composition and line weights correspond to the intensity level of the film.

The model of the analytical drawings is essentially a machine that unfolds the perspectives of the film clip as each peg is traveling in the grooves. Each peg is controlled on the back of the model by a net-work of strings. A series of five pegs move together at once and lock in the grove at different times.

MEMORIAL Beat Movement Poetry Plaza

MEMORIAL Beat Movement Poetry Plaza

A design for the memorial of the Beat Movement on Braodway St., San Francisco. Actual site is a parking lot with a large hill on the north. The model is at a scale of1ft = 1/4 inch.

My goal for this design is to create a memorial atmo-sphere not a monument for the passerby. I did not want to creat the chaos which is commonly associated with the movement, but a space that enables the public to escape from the disarray of Broadway. A space of stillness that allows the inhabitant to relax and observe the life of the city.

The crater design resonates strongly with James Turrel's Roden Crater. A the center is a stage laced around with water to reect the blue sky. The crater allows the in habitant to focus on the sky and mountain hill above. The wall that serves as a barrier has openings through which the viewer can peek and obtaint the raw sense of the atmosphere inside.

The Pacafic Film Academy is both a film school and also a museum for the San Francisco Film Festival, Located at the Golden Gate Park, next to the northern windmill. The design of the academy came in four major parts. First, the floor plan was mapped out according to the film analysis (P.2) in correspondance to the program of the building. The idea of perspectives were used again to direct view-points to the windmill and the ocean. Each space of the program is explored in the study models. Third, the overall form of the building began to emerge as each space is connected. Lastly, the building is reconnected to the site as topography is manipulated to split and wrap partly around the second floor and the windmill, connecting the public to the historic monument.

This is the nal model of theacademy design. It is a focus on the relationship between the building, the park, the windmill, and the ocean. The wood pieces represent the topography section of the site from the building to the ocean, with dierent types of wood highlighting the sand, sea wall, side walk, road, and park. The building is built in parts to present where the park bleed through the building. The model is 8 ft long @ 16” = 1’.

The concept of the design is rooted in the idea that bird watchers are voyeurs of the birds. They wait and study intently of the birds by remaining hidden while spying on the wild life as a form of psychological control and fascination. The space is created with one female and one male bird watcher in mind. The two spaces are arranged not only being able to watch the birds but also watch each other in both public and private spaces. The nylon material gives different opacity to the view, and can be controled by strecthing or condensing.

site mapping- speed : distance nature : mankind

The hotel is located at the southernest edge of the Alameda Naval Base. The site is an old naval base and is seldom occupied; only a few areas are maintained, while the rest of the land is laid barren. The diagram above graphs the natural footprint vs. the artificial footprint of the site through the approach of three different transportations: biking, driving, and boarding the ferry. This displays the two systems symbiotically inhabiting the space, which may seem barren at first, yet can be evident as one slows down and observe care-fully. The site model reflects this relationship by embossing or emboding the whole site with the same mapping.

Page 20: 2nd-3rd yr undergraduate portfolio

The landscape of the site is cut into strips like the slots of the mapping model and are set into varying heights to create spaces between the hotel units. The strips of land are the two symbiotic footprints merging and meeting to create the space in which the bird watchers dwell in their individual units. The spaces created by the landscape give varying view ports to watch birds and people as watchers travel up and down the strips to their rooms and or public areas.
