    Advanced 2D Machining

    Introduction

This document details the demonstration from the 2004 User Group to show multiple 2D

machining strategies and how to get the most out of ArtCAM and ArtCAM Insignia using 2D

    machining strategies.

    Female Inlay Wizard demonstration 2

In this demonstration the following 2D 2.!D machining strategies will "e co#ered$

    Female Inlay Wizard

    This demonstration shows the %emale Inla& 'i(ard machining a poc)et to a specified depth

using multiple tools. The %emale Inla& creates a poc)et into which a male insert will fit into.

The Inla& 'i(ard automaticall& compensates for the fact that the male insert will not ha#e

sharp corners due to the radius of the tool used to cut it. *ither +ne or Two tools ma& "e

used to machine the poc)et. The %inishing tool must "e specified and must "e the same si(e

as the tool used to machine the male insert which will fit into this poc)et.

The #ectors in the ArtCAM model ha#e "een created for a ,- thic) sheet of Maple eneer/ in

which D male parts will "e inla&ed into.

    Open the file Female Inlay.art

The 2D iew is showing the #ectors used to cut out the D parts. +ne thing to note is that

the D parts ha#e "een cut out using the Male Inla& 'i(ard. As long as the same #ectors are

used with the %emale Inla& 'i(ard and the 1AM* T++ to cut the profile/ the Male part will

    insert into the %emale poc)et.

Select all of the Vectors in the 2D View. Click on the Toolathtab located on the bottom left corner of the ArtCAM

    screen to open the ToolathWindow.

In the 2D Toolathssection choose the Inlaytoolpath.

Select Female !oc"etas the Inlay Tye.

For the Female Inlay !oc"etthe vales will be as follows!

    o #tart Deth $ %

    o Finish Deth $ %.&2'

    o Allowance $ %.%&'

    o Tolerance $ %.%%%'

It is #er& important that an Allowance is used when calculating inla& toolpaths. An allowance

specifies an offset from the machined #ectors to allow the Male part to fit into the %emale

part. If an Allowance is not used the parts will "e cut to an e3act si(e and will ha#e to "e

sanded in order to fit into one another.

Check to make sre the Machine #a(e ) is set to %.2b" e#tendin$ theMachine #a(e )window.

Click #electin the Finishing Toolsection to open the Tool Data*ase.

Choose a &+,- nd Millfrom the tool list.

%#tend the &+,- nd Millwindow to edit the tool parameters.

    Chan$e the followin$ vales!

    %or the %emale Inla& oc)et/ a 5oughing Tool will "e used to rough out the ma6orit& of the

Inla& oc)et material and allow for the finishing tool to onl& cut the profile of the Inla&

    poc)et.

    Check the se /oughing Tooloption.

Click the #electbtton to open the Tool Data*ase.

Select a 3- nd Millfrom the tool list.

%#tend the 3- nd Millwindow to edit the tool parameters.

Chec) the Material Thic)ness to set up the ArtCAM model according to Material the D parts

    will "e inla&ed into.

Select the #etubtton to open the Material #etu window.

#iew and will show a representation of what the finished part will loo) li)e if we were to

machine it on a C7C router.

(avi$ate to the bottom of the Toolath window to find the Toolath

    #imulationarea.

Click on the second Icon listed #imulate Toolath Fastoption to

    simlate the ngravingtoolpath.

The Inla& Toolpath will "e shown simulated at this point in the D #iew.

Another simulation to ha#e a loo) at to #iew the Inla& toolpath is the Draw 1olid toolpath. This will displa& a 2D toolpath pre#iew with a new solid simulation.

The solid colour shows the area that each tool will cut so &ou can see what the rofile tool

will clear out and how the Inla& 'i(ard rounds the corners of the part.

Click on the 2Dbtton to $o back to the 2D View.

On the Toolathwindow ncheck the Draw Wire(rame and Check Draw

    #olid.

(e#t )ncheck the 3- nd Millin the #how in 2Darea located at the top

    of the Toolathpa$e.

8elow are two screenshots of the Inla& 'i(ard using the Draw 1olid 2D simulation. The

second picture is (oomed into the rectangle #ector/ this is showing how the Inla& 'i(ard has

rounded the corner to allow for the Male part to fit. The colour of the Draw 1olid can "e

changed to #iew different colours for each toolpath.

The colours &ou assign to a particular tool name will "e remem"ered "& ArtCAM and re9used

on future parts when a tool of that name is specified.

In the Toolath ;erationsarea of the Toolathwindow* click on the first

    icon #ave Toolaths.

)sin$ the arrows* move the toolpaths from the =alculated toolathlist

over to the Toolaths to save to a single (ile.

If the machine "eing used does not ha#e a tool changer &ou will need to sa#e each of the

toolpaths out as a single toolpath file. 1elect the C7C machine from the Machine output filelist to sa#e the machine code for a specific machine.

Select a C(C +oter from the Machine ;utut Filelist and click #ave.

At this point the toolpaths are read& to "e sent to the C7C machine to "egin car#ing.
