CORBIN—Jeff Chumley of Keavy con- tinued his winning streak in the Burning Rubber Radio Mini- Stock Series at Corbin Speedway by receiving the victor’s trophy for the 25-lap feature race. Chumley and his Reelz Video & Tanning No. 4 Sentra actually went under the check- ered flag 5.12 seconds behind the Burning Rubber Radio No. 71 CRX driven by Travis Travillian of East Bernstadt, but post-race inspection found unap- proved tires on the apparent winner. As usual, the Mini- Stock main event was one of the more exciting of the night. Steve Decker of Williamsburg took the lead at the start in his Decker Racing No. 25 Escort, and held on for two laps before Les Jackson of Corbin made an inside pass for the front spot in the third and fourth turns on the third trip around. As Jackson pulled away, a battle ensued for the next couple of spots, with Travillian getting inside of Clifford Wagers of for third place on the 4th lap. Two laps later, he passed Decker to take over sec- ond spot. On the 17th lap, Jackson slowed, the vic- tim of a dropped cylin- der in his Cooter’s Towing & Auto Repair No. 48 Neon, and pulled into the pit area leaving Travillian in the lead. All this time, Chumley had been working his way up from the rear of the 10-car field, having started on the tail as the previous event’s win- ner. He passed Wagers for second place on the 22nd lap, but was unable to close the gap on Travillian enough to challenge. Wagers and his Wagers Auto Parts No. 37 Escort officially placed second, with Decker third. Rounding out the fin- ish, in order, were Nathaniel Harrison of Keavy in the Reelz Video & Tanning No. 9 Escort, Harold Frye of Corbin at the wheel of the Wildcat Pawn No. 7 Neon, Corey Blankenship of Corbin and his Battle Pack No. 47 Sunbird, Joseph Knuckles of Keavy driv- ing the Knuckles Racing No. 20 Ultima, Bradley Abner of Heidrick and the Abner’s Houseboat Repair No. 71x Toyota, Jackson, and Stacy Harrison in the Reelz Video & Tanning No. 3 Neon. Chumley was the fast- est in time trials with a 15.642 second qualifying lap. Trophy dashes were won by Jackson and Frye. During preseason basketball practice last fall, North Laurel’s Mikaela Prichard saw her senior season taken away in an instant when she tore her ACL. Not only would she miss the basketball sea- son, but also the tennis season in the spring. To say she was devas- tated would be an understatement. “I was immediately terrified,” Prichard said. She thought for sure any dreams of playing sports in col- lege had went down the drain. But sometimes dreams do come true, as Thursday morning Prichard signed to play tennis for the University of the Cumberlands. “This is a dream come true,” Prichard said. “I always wanted to play sports in col- lege.” Two weeks after her surgery, she was at Cumberlands with the North Laurel basket- ball team as they were practicing for an upcoming tournament. Even though she couldn’t play, Prichard still wanted to be with her team. Then a chance meeting gave her a whole new out- look on life. “I talked to Lauren Wombles,” Prichard said. Wombles, who played at South Laurel, torn her ACL at the end of Cumberlands’ season last year and came back this season to become the all-time leading scorer and rebounder in the school’s history. “She told me life goes on and to use this to come back stronger and mentally tougher.” “This is a good day for the University of the Cumberlands,” said Patriots head coach Chin Tan, who has guided the program for 23 years. “We like sign- ing local players. We let one get loose (referring to Prichard’s older sis- ter, Mackenzie) but we got a good one in Mikaela. I feel like I just won the Oscar. I really like her and she jives with me a little bit more. Maybe it is because we are both lefties. She’s mentally tough and loves the game.” “She can be a great attacking player,” North Laurel coach Bobby Smith said. “She made two trips to the state tournament (one with her sister, Mackenzie, and last year with Caroline Moore) and the way her and Caroline finished last year I felt like they would have been favor- ites in the region this year in doubles.” Smith said Prichard being a lefty has its advantages in doubles. “Doubles is her strong point,” Smith said. “I told her she needs to model her game after (tennis great) Martina Navratilova. Be more of an attacking player. I would like to see her do that.” Prichard has also played soccer and bas- ketball, but said that tennis came the easiest to her. She plans on majoring in elementary education, and said that she will need to learn how to keep her cool better on the court and get mentally ready. 2B I FRIDAY, APRIL 6, 2012 The Sentinel-Echo I www.sentinel-echo.com [email protected] PHOTO BY STRADER MOTORSPORTS PHOTOGRAPHY Anthony Wagers of London set fast qualifying time, then won the trophy dash and 25-lap feature for the Grease Monkey Auto Care Pure Street Series at Corbin Speedway on Saturday evening, March 31.
