TS II. Getting Started

A. Type of battery• The batteries in the kit are custom designed for theReader. The use of other commercial batteries WILLNOT activate the Reader and could cause permanentdamage.

B. Installation • To install the battery, remove the thumb screw andslide open the door on end of the Reader handle. Turnthe battery as indicated in diagram below.

IMPORTANT: Only one end of the battery is designed toenter the chamber. If battery does not fit easily, turn overand re-insert. Forcing the incorrect battery end into thechamber could damage the components.

• Close the door after battery is correctly inserted.

A. Types of kits• The D-T Reader is packaged and sold in two kits:the DTRI-4 and the DTRI-4-K1. A charger andpower cord are included in the DTRI-4-K1 only.

III. Operation

A. Activate the Reader• Push the activation switch (A in diagram below) onthe bottom of the Reader to turn power on (allow 3 to4 seconds for startup to complete). The RED light onthe top of the Reader should be lit. The light will stayon for the duration of the scanning process.

B. Three indicator lights

Steady red: indicates power is on.Flashing blue: indicates Reader is searching for wireless connection.Steady blue: indicates Reader is connected to host.One green flash: indicates a tag has been read.

C. Battery charging• The battery should be fully charged before first useand should only be charged with the charger supplied.

• The battery may be charged either within or outside theReader chamber.

• When charging inside the unit, loosen the screw ½ inchto uncover the charging receptacle. Then retighten screw.

• Plug the charger into a standard AC outlet. Plug thecharger cord into the battery receptacle. The unit willpower down.

Note: The Reader cannot be used while charging the battery.The battery will be fully charged in about two hours.

• When battery is charged, remove from charger andclose battery door. The unit is now ready for operation.

Note:: The battery WILL NOT overcharge and can becharged at any time.

IV. Connecting To A Host Device

A. Serial cable connection• Connect the Reader to your host data collectiondevice (PDA, laptop, or electronic scale) using the communication cable and plugging it into the serial port.

• Verify that the host device has been properly configuredto accept data from the Reader. Consult your hostmanual for connection specifications.

• Communication protocol: Standard - RS232 Baud rate - 9600 Data bits - 8Parity - none Hits - 1Flow - none

B. Bluetooth wireless connection to a desktop or laptop

Many of the current laptops and desktop computers arecapable of connecting to remote devices through the use ofBluetooth wireless transceivers that are built in or added tothe computer. Installation instructions are specificallydesigned for the device you select. Use the instruction manual supplied with the device for proper operation.

The following should be noted when setting up your device:

• Ensure that the outbound COM port is selected bythe application software for the RFID number input.

C. Reading tags• Press the scanning switch and hold until the tag hasbeen successfully scanned. Pass the Reader within 6inches of the ID Tag.

IMPORTANT: Release the switch before scanning the next tag.This allows the Reader to reset and return to the scan mode.

D. Pre-test before scanning animals• A Destron test tag has been provided with the D-TReader. Hold this tag in the palm of your hand andpass the Reader over the tag. Allow 3-4 seconds forReader to register the scan.

E. Shutdown• The Reader DOES NOT need to be turned off. Itwill shut down automatically after it has been inactivefor 5 minutes.

F. Storage• Be careful that the power switch is not accidentallyheld in the “on” position during storage, or the Readerbattery will deplete and need to be re-charged, anddamage may occur.

ECTING TO A HOST DEVICE


• To turn on the Bluetoothfunction, tap the Bluetoothicon located in the lower rightcorner of the PDA screen. TheMenu will be displayed. Select“Turn Bluetooth ON.” Thiswill turn on the wireless connection and the red circle“Z” will disappear.

2) Configure the PDA serial port

• To verify the proper setup ofthe Bluetooth device, tap theBluetooth icon again to displaythe menu. Tapping on“Bluetooth Settings” will display the settings window.

• The software on the computer is able to accept theproper protocol (i.e. N81 no parity bits, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit)

IMPORTANT: The secure connection on the laptop ordesktop must be disabled for the Destron Reader toproperly connect to a computer. For instructions on disabling this connection, please refer to your Bluetoothdevice software manual or wizard.

C. Bluetooth wireless connection to a PDA

Many of the current PDA’s are capable of connecting toremote devices through the use of Bluetooth wirelesstransceivers that are built in or added to the device.

IMPORTANT: Due to the many different configurationpossibilities and constant changes to software, it is best toconsult your own user manual for directions on how toconnect the PDA to the Reader.

A sample PDA connection: If you are using a WindowsCE device (Pocket PC 2003), set up the device as follows:

1) Turn on the Bluetooth

• Turn on the PDA and allow a few seconds for thedevice to turn on the Bluetooth function. A Bluetoothicon should appear in the lower right hand corner of thescreen. If a red circle with a white “z” appears next to theBluetooth icon, then the Bluetooth device is sleepingand must be turned on.

Note: If this is your first timein the manager screen, tap”New” located in the lowerleft hand corner of the PDAscreen. Tap on “connect” anddouble tap “Explore aBluetooth device”.

• Tap inside the “Nodevice selected” box. TheBluetooth Reader MUSTBE ON when the browseris in a search mode. The “Bluetooth Browser” willappear while the PDA is searching for a device.

• When the Browser detects theReader, the Serial Port Icon willappear on the PDA. Tap on theReader Icon to open theBluetooth Connection Wizard.

• The available services willbe displayed in the “ServiceSelection” box. Tap the SerialPort and then tap Next onthe lower right corner of thePDA. Finally tap Finish.

• On the bottom of the settingswindow tap on the right arrowand scroll until the serial porttab appears.

• Tap on the Serial Port tabto ensure that “Enable service” is checked. The“Authorization required”and “Authentication(Passkey) required” shouldnot be checked. Then tapthe “OK” button at the topof the screen.

3) Enable the serial connection

• Tap the Bluetooth iconagain and select “BluetoothManager”. This will displaythe previously configureddevices.

• Turn on your DestronReader and then double tapon the serial port icon toenable the connection tothe reader.

V. TROUBLESHOOTING

V. Troubleshooting

PROBLEM• Reader power light does not come on.

ACTION• The battery must be fully charged. Charge battery. • Inspect and clean terminals on the battery if needed.• Make sure battery is fully inserted and door is closedand sealed.

PROBLEM • Reader has reduced read range or is not readingElectronic ID (EID) tags.

ACTION• The battery may be getting low. Recharge the battery.

IMPORTANT: Metal objects, computer monitors, videoscreens, or other Readers or microchip tags within 18” of thescanning area (check pockets) may distort the read range.

• If using a laptop computer, make sure it is properlygrounded, using a three-prong plug.• To see if the host device is the problem, disconnect theReader and scan the test tag.

PROBLEM• Host device will not accept data.

ACTION• Check cable connections to Reader and the host device.

4) Pair the device

• Highlight the serial connection. Tap on Tools. Atthe top of the screen tap Add. A screen will open thatreads, “Bluetooth: Device pairing.”

• Tap on the Search icon anddevice name will appear withidentification numbers. InPasskey window, enter last 5digits of the device IDnumber. Tap on OK.

• The Wireless Serial cableicon will remain on in theBluetooth Manager screenduring future use.

VI. Proper Use and Care

• While the Reader is designed to perform in harsh conditions, it IS NOT to be used as an animal paddle, tool, or as an instrument for anything otherthan scanning animal tags. Use of the Reader for non-scanning functions could permanently damage thecomponents and replacement/repair WILL NOT becovered under the warranty.

• Clean the Reader when needed with a mild cleaningsolution. DO NOT immerse the Reader in water orclean with strong chemical solutions.

• Verify communications setup configuration on host.

PROBLEM• Reader’s green light stays on continuously.

ACTION• Remove the battery and replace or reinstall. Then, re-testthe system. If the problem continues, disconnect theReader from the host device and test. If the Reader nowworks properly, verify the settings on the host device.

The Reader is warranted against defects in materials andworkmanship under normal use and service for one (1)year from date of purchase. This warranty will not apply ifadjustment, repair or parts placement is required due to anaccident, neglect, damage during transportation, or bycauses other than ordinary use.

Digital Angel Corporation’s sole responsibility under thiswarranty shall be, at its option, to either repair or replaceany product that fails during the warranty period. In noevent shall Digital Angel Corporation be liable for anyindirect or consequential damages or loss of profit.
