Aloha nui kakou!

May I send aloha to all of you at this XXIX AnnualConvention of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs in Keauhou,Kona, Hawaii. This is a special place to me, where my kupunalived and worked, and where the next generation continues to doso. It is an ahupuaa where my father, aunt and uncle showed methe secret, fun places of their youth before developme~t came, soit is homecoming in many ways, and I truly welcome you.

"E paepae iluna loa ika malamalama - Hold high the lightof knowledge" is an appropriate them~ for this convention~ and afitting tribute to our late Association President, Benson W. K.Lee. The pursuit of knowledge and education for all Hawaiians wasan essential belief to Benson, and encouraging the Association tocontinue the support of educational excellence was his legacy tous ~hat we accept with gratitude. Join me as we dedicate thisconvention to his memory.

It's important to say thank you to the Officers andmembers of the clubs for their diligence and ability to carryonthe business of the Association despite the sudden loss of ourPresident in January. I believe it is a sign of a mature andwell established organization that we are to be able to recoverfrom trauma and continue to do what must be done.

For me, it has been ten months of exacting tests, culminating over the next few days in what 'could be significantchanges to our Constitution and HACPAC. But change need notbe threatening, and I urge you to participate in the scrutiny ofour constitution as a positive and educational experience torefine and improve the document that governs our organization

Repeatedly, over the past ten months, the message thathas come through very clearly to me is that Civic Club members arededicated to the goals and purposes of their clubs and theAssociation. It makes me proud to see how much we all believe inthis organization and its tremendous track record of attempting toimprove the Hawaiian condition.

However, neither are we content to cruise on ourpast achievements at a time when exciting events are taking shapein health and social issues, education, land and politics. Iventure to say, that if things are happening to~ Hawaiians, CivicClubs will be involved.

Finally, I salute those Visionaries who prepared thefoundation for Civic Clubs - to the Kupuna who worked long andhard with a singleminded belief in themselves as Hawaiians whowanted to share and help other Hawaiians - we owe you our eternalgratitude.

As you taught us, so will we

OAHU DISTRICT REPORTThe Oahu District Council began the year of activities by attending the Mauna Ala service for Queen Emma

Kaleleonalani on January 2, in the chapel after many years of resortation work.

The great celebration of "Hoolako" at the Aloha Stadium, saw a good representation from the Oahu DistrictCouncil.

Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole is honored annually on the first Sunday of March at the Council sponosredHoikeike or Family Sunday at the Bishop Museum. The major sponsor was the Hawaiian Telephone Co. Mauna Alaservice is held on the 26th of March, which is shared by two clubs, Hawaiian Civic Club of Honolulu and Prince KuhleHawaiian Civic Club. A tree planting ceremony and program honoring Prince Kuhio by GSA is held annually at thePrince Kuhio Building. Members of the Council are invited and participating in the program is the Prince Kuhio HCC.

The Council attended every Alii Sunday church service at Kawaiahao Church honoring some of our Alii's, St.Andrew's Cathedral and the Mauna Ala Services.

The Council participated in Queen Liliuokalani's 150th birthday celebration by attending Mauna Ala Hookupuand decorating of the Queen's statue on September 1st.

The Council also sponsors a Bowling league held at jClassic jBowl.

To increase membership was one of the major goals this year. The Education Committee conducted a seminar"Ha'aheo 0 Hawaii" held at the Kamehameha Schools.

Hawaiian language lessons at our Council meetings are of love and joy.

This year is election year for the Oahu District Council and it will be held on Oct. 8th at the Pre-ConventionCaucus meeting at the Kamehameha Schools Princess Ruth fKe'elikolani Auditorium.

HAWAII DISTRICT COUNCIL REPORTThe following are highlights of some of the activities of this council. Some of the club activities are on

going such as fundraisers for Scholarships, language classes and arts and crafts.

At three of our council meetings we were honored with the presence of Association President JalnaKeala, Past President, Whitney Anderson, (Kona) President Emeritus Dr. George Mills, ConventionAdministrator and Vice President, Toni Lee and Ms. Linda Delaney Con-Con and By-Laws Chairman(Kana) .

Hosting Council meetings this past year was Laupahoehoe at Papaaloa Waimea at the WaimeaCommunity Center, Kana at Hulihee Palace Kuakini Room and Kau at Aspen.

Elected to serve for another two year term are the following officers. District Council President, Ann K.Nathaniel, District Council Director, Walter Victor. At the subsequent District Council meeting electedwere Reynolds Kamakawiwoole, Council Vice President and Martha McNicol Council Treasurer. Sharingsecretarial duties will be Chris Naito and Ululani Sherlock.

Expertise and concerns is being sought from our clubs by major developers in their planningprocesses. The successful relationship between Waimea and Mauna Lani has become a model that othersare following for better understanding of Hawaiian concerns and developers goals and objectives.

Last year our clubs participated in an island wide Makahiki, in support of the Kealakekua Bay HistoricSociety. In following through with this project we sent a letterto Governor, John Waihee supporting theSociety in their request that a fitting memorial be placed at Kaawaloa to commemorate those Hawaiianswho lost their lives in 1779.

We would be remiss if we did not use this medium to thank all of the clubs who contributed to theKalakaua statue project in Hila. The August dedication was attended by all of our clubs with fitting floraltributes. In spite of the inclement weather, the unveiling and draping of our hookupu on the Kalakaua statuewas an unprecedented activity long over due in Hila.

Mahalo,

Ann K. NathanielDistrict Council, President

BRIEF HISTORY OF THEASSOCIATION OF HAWAIIAN CIVIC CLUBS

As most everyone knows (or should know), the Civic Club movement was the fulfillment of a dream for Prince JonahKuhio Kalaniana'ole, who, having served as delegate to Congress as a representative of the Territory of Hawai'i, wasconcerned that his people know more about government and the community at large.

He chose as the first president of Hawaiian Civic Club of Honolulu (often referred to as the "Mother Club") a risingyoung Hawaiian attorney, Mr. William H. Heen. Subsequently, Mr. Heen became very active in Hawaiian politics, rising to the position of State Senator and holding a position of great prestige and respect in the Democratic party.

Following the establishment of the Honolulu club, others followed, so that by 1959 there were enough clubs towarrant the formation of an Oahu Council, comprised of 'Ewa, Honolulu, Ko'olaupoko, Nana'ikapono, Wai'anae, andWaialua-Wahiawa. Other clubs throughout the then-Territory were invited to attend the First Convention, held at thePrincess Ka'iulani Hotel on April 18, 1959. Mr. William H. Heen was the guest speaker, and there were 83 delegateswho were assigned to the following Committees: Legislation (Rep. Joe Leong worked in this Committee!),Organization & Objectives (here we find Father Kekumano!), Registration & Credentials (Lurline Lee worked here!),Resolutions (lots of familiar names here, but none still active), and Rules of the Convention (again lots of familiarnames but none still tackling the rules).

Clubs from the neighbor islands attending this meeting were 1 from Kaua'i (Kapa'aj, 2 from Maui (Lahaina andKahului), 1 from Moloka'i (Ho'olehua), and 4 from Hawai'i (Hamakua, Hilo, Kona and Waimea).

The original Executive Committee consisted of David Bent, William Kea, William I. Kanakanui, Jay Landis,Gulstan Poepoe, George Richardson and Gabriel Weisbarth.

Incidentally, George Richardson was President of the 'Ewa club and continues in that position till today! Andwe're lucky to have Bill Kea, Jay Landis and Gulstan Poepoe still available for advice and guidance.

The first Convention involving the Clubs throughout the state was held on Maui at Baldwin High School in 1961.Harry ~ield was president. Since that time the Association has witnessed a growth to 21 clubs on Oahu, 9 on Hawai'i, 5in Maui County and 4 on Kaua'l, as well as 4 on the mainland.

We have established a reputation of serious consideration of current ;community problems, as well as addressingthe concerns of our members wherever possible. We are looked upon as a valuable resource by many facets of thecommunity, as well as the legislature.

Prince Kuhio would have been proud to witness our growth and the sincere interest of the clubs and theirmembers in their community, their children and their unique culture.

(Compiled by Bobbee Mills (Ko'olauloa H.C.C.) with a lot of help from Jay Landis (Waianae H.C.C.)

Congratulations to all the members- of the Hawaiian Civic Clubsattending the 29th Annual Convention.
