FROM THE RECTOR 29 June 2014 Dear Friends, Peter and Paul, the twin pillars of the Church, were never separated either in the ancient liturgy or in iconography.

Simon’s confessing of his belief in Jesus as the Christ earned him the surname Peter, with the responsibility for guiding and strengthening his brothers for the mission and building up of the Church. Paul became the Church’s great missionary and teacher, full of energy and devoured by love of him whom he had once persecuted in the Church, God’s chosen instrument to make known to the pagans the good news of salvation.

Each of them had his place in the development of the faith. It was in Rome that both were martyred, finally united in that love which they strove to promote.

With every blessing, Fr Steven Salmon, Rector

PARISH NEWS VALE

Hilary Dowe: We extend our sympathies to the family of our longstanding, faithful parishioner, Hilary Dowe who died on Wednesday 18 June. Her Funeral Service will be held at St John’s on Wednesday 2 July at 11:30am, followed by a light luncheon in the Parish Centre. Hilary had for many years been a loyal and much loved supporter of the Parish and tireless member of the Mothers’ Union branch here. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family.

Music notes for today’s Family Eucharist: The simple, but exquisitely beautiful anthem 'If ye love me' is by the Tudor composer, Thomas Tallis (c. 1505-1585), who maintained a position at the heart of England's Chapel Royal, throughout the reformation, counter-reformation, and the eventual religious settlement, despite being Roman Catholic. Tallis and William Byrd, another Roman Catholic, were granted a monopoly on the printing of music during their lifetime. Tallis' work is simple and syllabic in keeping with the view of music espoused by the Puritan church in England in the 1560s. The voluntary is by the Belgian organist and composer, Flor Peeters (1903-1986). This toccata is drawn from his collection of 'Hymn preludes for the liturgical year, Op 100' and is based upon the martial theme of 'Ich will dich lieben, mein Starke', translated as 'Thee will I love, my strength, my tower'. Peeters was a noted teacher and held the position of Organist at St Rumbold's Cathedral in Mechelen, in Belgium from 1923 until his death.

St John's Op Shop will be held next on Saturday 5 July, 8:00 to 11:30am. Help is needed, please, for:

o Thursday - setting up, 3:00pm. o Friday - stocking tables, 9:30am. o Saturday - putting away, 11:30am

We urgently need extra help during the trading on Saturday also, as a number of our workers will be away. Please contact Robyn Couch (0414 645 338) or the Parish Office (9971-8694 Mon-Fri, 9:00am-1:00pm) if you can help. Mothers’ Union: Instead of the usual July meeting, St John’s MU branch will be visiting St Faith’s Narrabeen for the annual Deanery Day on Wednesday 16 July. (The Service at St Faiths starts at 10:30am; some MU members will go straight to Narrabeen, and others will attend St John's Eucharist at 10:00am, then Deacon Sandra can drive them to Narrabeen at 10:45am.) The speaker will be Wendy Mayer the Diocesan MU president. From St Faith’s MU members, “Everyone welcome, and please bring your friends”. For information, please speak with Margaret Winters. Happy Birthday to Glen Kinging (30th), Brian Butler, Shirley Butler (1st), Laurelei Moore, Gaye McLindin (4th), Debby Roberts (5th)

Wedding Anniversary Congratulations to Fr Steven and Dn Sandra (2nd) St John’s Men’s Group: Breakfast on Saturday 19 July in the Parish Centre following the 7:30am Eucharist. Our guest, parishioner and police force officer, Winston Langthorne, is to speak on “how policing both challenges and affirms ones faith”. All welcome ($5 donation invited); to assist with catering, please add your name to the list in the lobby.

People in our Prayers: Alma Ondevilla writes, “Just to let you know I was released last Sunday from Mona Vale Hospital. Jaron, my eldest son, is staying with me for a while; bless him. Thank you St John’s for all for your care; it showed me again who you are, and how wonderful it is for me to say that you are my family. I am now fine, and cannot thank you enough how my life shifted since I crossed the street when the church bell rang on 17 May 2009. Thank you again for everything. All my love, Alma xxx

Rock’n’Roll Dance: Thanks to Helen, Lynette and all who made the Dance on Saturday 21 June so enjoyable. A good time was had, transporting all who came back to the “days of rock”; plus money was raised for the organ fund.

Organ Fund: "We would like to thank everyone who has donated to the organ fund thus far. We are delighted to report that the amount raised is currently $64,500. Well done everyone; this is an excellent result - however, we still have some distance to go to cover the complete cost of the organ. Naturally, we will be delighted to receive any further contributions of any amount. You will have noticed that all the keys have now been sold, so further donations will now go towards the remaining 15 stops. Many thanks once again.”

Lynette and the fund-raising team" Memorial to David Coburn: Many will remember David Coburn who was organist here between 1991 and 2003. The Parish Council has agreed to dedicate a stop on the new organ to David's memory. The idea of enlarging the Pogson organ was David's dream many years ago. Any who wish to contribute to this memorial should speak with Lynette, or include an envelope marked “David Coburn Memorial” with their offering.

Red Cross Blood Service: One in three Australians will need blood, but only one in thirty donates. Donated blood helps cancer patients, people with blood disorders, mothers-to-be and newborn babies, as well as trauma and surgical patients. The Mobile Blood Service is at Dee Why Surf Club next month, (7-10 July, 12:30-7:00pm Mon-Tue, 9:30am-4:00pm Wed-Thu). Please see the notice board in the lobby. To donate, first book a time on 13 14 95, then eat a substantial meal and drink three to four glasses of water in the hours before. Take your donor card or photo ID when you visit.
