From designing and developing internationally recognised brands and businesses to breaking records in sport and other fields, highly-accomplished female leaders around the world inspire and astonish us with their venerable achievements. Yet even today, when compared to the large numbers of men who have risen to the top of their fields or sectors, the corresponding proportion of women is far smaller.

A number of common traits and trends can be found among the world’s top female achievers. These include confidence in one’s capabilities and competences, a willingness to take risks, persistence, perseverance, hard work and self-improvement – as well as the ability to stay focused on one’s goals. All of these are personal qualities or components of one’s character. Successful inventors and leaders tend not to blame others when things go wrong, or seek excuses for their shortcomings and failures, but look deep within themselves, and find ways to get to where they want to go.

On 29 October 2015, an assortment of prominent and esteemed entrepreneurs, sporting legends and business leaders gathered in Singapore for the second annual FT-BNP Paribas Women at the Top Asia Forum, which coincided with the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global. Trailblazers of innovation, entrepreneurship and leadership shared with those present insights into their career journeys, including the steps they took to launch and build successful brands and businesses, and their unique strategies for overcoming adversity in order to fulfil their potential and achieve their personal goals.

A number of participants at the forum shared views on the prevailing issue of gender equality, and ways to address and overcome this issue. According to Alain Papiasse, deputy chief operating officer of BNP Paribas, “Gender diversity makes business sense.” Indeed, a report published by McKinsey in September 2015 estimates that if women were to play an identical role in labour

markets to men’s, as much as uS$28 trillion, or 26 percent, could be added to global annual GDP in 2025. Papiasse maintains that not only gender diversity, but also racial, cultural, and religious diversity bring more innovation and more creativity to the workplace.

During an engaging panel discussion focused on making or breaking it as an entrepreneur, both Susan Chong, CeO of Greenpac, and Beverly Sunn, founder of Asia Pacific Properties & APP Mobility and board chairperson of OKAY.com, noted that cultural norms and societal expectations can be a barrier for women, particularly in Asia. “Women are under pressure to achieve perfection,” said Sunn. She encourages women not to submit to this pressure, but to create their own goals and seek their own paths.

Xiaoyan Jiang, BNP Paribas’ head of real estate sector, investment banking for Asia Pacific, and also Claire Chang, co-founder and senior vice president of Banyan Tree Holdings, both echoed this in a panel on corporate leadership and driving change from the top. “[When doing business in China,] if you don’t drink, smoke, sing karaoke or play golf, you’ve got to find your own ways to convince your clients to choose to work with you over competitors. Although I don’t [do any of those male-oriented activities], I know the space, I know exactly what the investors want,” explained Jiang.

Former international tennis champion and official legend ambassador for the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global. Martina Navratilova, also explored this issue in an onstage interview with the FT’s Asia Capital Markets editor, Jennifer Hughes. “Society seems to think that competitiveness is a positive trait in men, but in women it’s seen as negative, she pointed out. “I always refused to see it that way.”

Page 6: 29 October 2015 Fullerton Hotel Singapore€¦ · Official Legend Ambassador for the 2015 BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global MODerATOr Jennifer Hughes Asia Capital

This competitive spirit, dynamism and ambition common among successful women in various fields and sectors around the world is an interesting trend, and according to participants at the forum, it’s not a coincidence. Having the right mentality and mindset is critical in order to go far in one’s career of choice.

When talking about the extremely tough decisions and the sacrifices she had to make to pursue her dream, Navratilova recounted an emotional story of how, aged 18, she made the choice to leave Czechoslovakia – at the time a Communist country – with the knowledge that she could not return, and would not see her own family for several years. “But I landed on my feet,” she said. She then revealed more about her determination and fierce attitude towards pursuing her dream: “To achieve my goals, I had to be the best tennis player I could be. That meant [constantly] getting in better shape, eating better, putting on weight, losing weight, thinking more about tactics, working on my technique, working on my strategy – all of this. You’ve got to give it everything you have.”

A second celebrity interview of the morning featured Patrick Mouratoglou, coach of Serena Williams, founder and CeO of Mouratoglou Tennis Academy, and president, Champ Seed Foundation, who shared with those present some exclusive insights into his experiences of working with Williams. “When Serena was going through a difficult time in her career, [a three year period with no wins,] she said to me that she was prepared to die in order to become number one again,” he revealed. Mouratoglou’s respect and admiration for the tennis star’s attitude and strength of character was evident. “Champions think differently [to the rest of us,]” he stated. “Mental strength is much more valuable than skill or know-how… You have to convince yourself; you have to think in the right way. Serena never sees herself losing. even if she’s down 5-1, 6-1, match point, she still sees herself winning.”

This concept was developed and analysed by panellists, who agreed that confidence and courage are deal-breakers for those who want to make it to the top in the corporate world. Jayesh Parekh, managing partner at Jungle Ventures and co-founder of Sony entertainment Television, declared that there is nothing holding any individual (male or female) back from becoming an entrepreneur, but being confident in your abilities and being prepared to take risks is essential. According to Parekh, those who have good ideas and who have the gumption, can make it. He pointed out, however, that in general, men tend to be more forward than women with their ideas – even if their ideas aren’t any good.

Participants also concurred that to make it to the top, individuals must have a clear goal in mind. “You need to know what you want,” explained Chiang. A number of speakers shared with those present their personal goals, from becoming world number one in women’s tennis, to finding a way to monetise an ethical business idea that nobody is prepared to pay for; highlighting how persistence and perseverance are crucial. Chiang revealed how her career has been “dotted with failure”, and stressed the importance of not being afraid of this but embracing and overcoming failure and disappointment.

Navratilova and Mouratoglou both shared opinions and attitudes towards responding to setbacks. In tennis, keeping your emotions in check is vital. “You can get upset about missing a shot, but you need to channel that emotion so that you don’t miss the next one,” volunteered Navratilova. “When things go wrong, you have to ask yourself what you need to do to make it right.” This means being aware of one’s weaknesses. Navratilova is an advocate of trying out new techniques and ideas; if they work then you will see progress and improvement; if not, then you need to change something else.

Angela Mackay, global publisher at FT Live and managing director Asia Pacific of the Financial Times, articulated this mentality, common among high-achievers, as the “constant quest to improve.” Parekh shared that when starting out on his own, he realised that his tech and sales background was not going to be sufficient if he wanted to oversee an entire business. In order for him to progress and move onto the next phase of his career, he had to develop other skills such as finance and Hr. Michelle Guthrie, managing director for agencies in Asia Pacific at Google, explained that the tech giant’s ongoing ability to maintain its position as a market leader comes down to its relentless focus on innovation and improvement. The company constantly reviews its own products with a critical eye, seeking ways to upgrade them. examples are enabling the search tool to predict what you want to find before you’ve finished typing; giving you the option to ask a question orally to your mobile; or using stored data to give you answers without you even asking for them, in the form of automated suggestions and alerts.

A final point that the conference explored was the importance of establishing a good support system – be it a mentor, coach, boss, or member of the family. Participants agreed that too much stress can be detrimental to one’s performance. Indu Shahani, principal of H.r. College of Commerce & economics and former sheriff of Mumbai, shared that in India, family plays a major role in supporting those who work full time, while participants living in Hong Kong and Singapore said they tend to outsource help at home. Jiang underlined the benefits of finding a supportive workplace and a supportive boss. The closing message to all women seeking to become leaders, innovators and champions, was to ignore perceptions of what’s possible and what’s not – your destiny is in your own hands.
