The Philip Slein Gallery is pleased to present Monochromatic Paintings, the first St. Louis exhibition for New York painter Robert Sagerman. Merging painting, sculpture, and Jewish mysticism, Robert Sagerman approaches each one of his textured, abstract composition before building up thick, massing monochromatic surfaces that toe the line between painting and sculptural relief. A

In addition, the gallery is pleased to introduce another New York painter, Alison Hall whose work is also rooted in ritual, meditation, and repetition. Like Sagerman’s work, Hall’s paintings appear to be monochromatic, however, upon further inspection, they are captivating in their formal complexity and subtlety. Duane Reed Gallery Open HouseFriday, 29th April, 4:00-6:00pm4729 McPherson Ave, St. Louis, MO 63108

We will be exhibiting the work of two established and long time artists, Aaron Karp and James Marshall, both living and working in New Mexico. Although different in mediums; Karp working as a painter and Marshall as a ceramic sculptor, these two artists each create visually powerful work that masterfully utilizes texture and surface quality. Karp approaches his paintings from the perspective of simultaneously concealing and revealing, playing out the metaphor that relates directly to his process of building and fracturing layers of paint. James Marshall’s ceramic pieces explore the quality of the liminal nature they represent. These objects exist just past the threshold of the subliminal realm at the point of emergence and its resulting openness and ambiguity. This relationship, existent in both aesthetic and philosophy, establishes a narrative between bodies of work, making for an engaging and stimulating experience for the viewer. This event is handicapped accessible.

The Webster University Film SeriesHere Come the VideofreexFriday, 29th April, 7:30-10:00pmWinifred Moore Auditorium, 470 E. Lockwood Ave., St. Louis, MO 63119

Here Come the Videofreex starts in 1969. America is undergoing cultural and political revolutions, but you’d never know it by watching TV. Young CBS executive Don West creates a secret project to tell the stories of the counterculture ignored by TV news. He hires a group of young people who have embraced a brand new medium – video. They name themselves the Videofreex and on CBS’s dime, they travel the country in an RV taping footage the networks could never get, including interviews with legendary activist Abbie Hoffman and Black Panther Fred Hampton just months before his murder. The pilot they produce proves to be decades ahead of its time. But when CBS executives see it, they fire the group and say they can keep the “worthless” equipment. The Videofreex decide to stick together, smuggling their videotapes out of CBS offices late one night in a guitar case. This event is handicapped accessible.

Tickets are $4-$6. Advance tickets are available from the cashier before each screening or contact the Film Series office (314) 246-7525 for more options. The Film Series can only accept cash or check.

Craft AllianceDark Matter: Featuring Terry Boyd and Amanda McCavour1st May - 8th May6640 Delmar Blvd, St. Louis MO 63130

Gallery hours are Tuesdays through Fridays 10:00am-5:00pm, Fridays through Saturdays 10:00am-6:00pm and Sunday 11:00am-5:00pm. Closed on Mondays.

Dark Matter features the work of Amanda McCavour and Terry M. Boyd, both of whom expressively use fiber to express emotion and push the boundaries of contemporary fiber art. This exhibition explores the more solemn and introverted emotional states, revealing and reveling in a darker side of our everyday consciousness. McCavour constructs Black Cloud out of various papers and yarns, creating a dark yet elegant form. The Cloud fills the room, so viewers will be able to interact with the artwork on an intimate level, peeking through it, looking up into it and walking around it. Paired with McCavour’s Black Cloud is Terry M. Boyd’s aggressive and expressive embroidery. Boyd’s 2-dimensional hand sewn pieces are predominantly mono-chromatic works that explore memory and provoke thoughts of vast spaces and abstract landscapes. This event is handicapped accessible.

Gallery hours are Tuesdays through Sundays 11:00am-4:00pm. Closed on Mondays.

Georges Rouault is a distinctive figure in twentieth-century art. Born in working-class Paris in 1871, Rouault was apprenticed as a youth to a stained glass workshop. In late 1890, he enrolled in the École des Beaux-Arts, where he became the favorite pupil of Symbolist painter Gustave Moreau. Rouault became involved with the Fauves (among them his classmate Henri Matisse) and began participating in major exhibitions, notably the Salon d’Automne of 1905. Rouault developed his own, primarily Expressionist, style, influenced by his strong affinity for the medieval period. Yet he remained outside of the group movements that dominated the twentieth century, developing a focused, persistent artistic vision expressed in a variety of media.
