FOREWORD

In 1982 Ron and Terrie Gomboc established Gomboc Gallery and Sculpture Park on this magnificent 4.5 hectare site in Middle Swan, north of Perth. Jane Brook meanders through the property and flows into the Swan River. To the east, rising above the limestone Swan River coastal plain, is the Darling Range, composed mainly of granite more than 2.5 billion years old.

The Sculpture Survey – now in its 28th consecutive year – is an annual exhibition at Gomboc Gallery, which highlights the works of invited distinguished artists and also the works of tertiary students currently studying sculpture at Curtin University, Edith Cowan University (ECU), and Polytechnic West, Midland Campus. Many participants from ECU are studying art education and aspire to be secondary school art teachers. This year the Gallery is especially pleased to feature the work of invited international artist Mr Sang-Wook Oh, one of South Korea’s most distinguished artists.

Sang-Wook Oh studied sculpture at the Hong Ik University where he completed a BFA and an MFA before advancing his studies at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts in Paris. He is Director of the Mooyi Sculpture Park in Gangwon and teaches sculpture at Kyungwon University. He has exhibited in Korea, China, Germany, France, the USA, and now in Australia.

Although renowned for large sculptures and public art projects using a diverse range of materials and abstracted forms, here at Gomboc Gallery Sang-Wook Oh is exhibiting several more intimate scaled pieces, including groupings of human figures cut and constructed of mirror-polished welded stainless steel, or carved voluptuously from soft peach-coloured marble.

The Gombocs have been instrumental in helping to facilitate six consecutive Sculpture by the Sea exhibitions at Cottesloe Beach (2005-011), one of Western Australia’s biggest outdoor visual art events. Many local artists selected for this competitive beachside exhibition gained valuable experience when they participated, as students, in a Gomboc Sculpture Survey. It is challenging to create sculpture in the first place, and especially to create works able to withstand the weather and the engagement of curious audiences.

Twenty-eight years is a testament to Ron and Terrie Gomboc’s generosity and their vision to provide students with the important experience of exhibiting work in a private commercial enterprise. Not only does the Survey provide the opportunity to learn by analysing the works of established artists whose sculptures are exhibited here year-round, but it also teaches them what is involved in organising an event and exhibiting art works.

Over fifty works by students are on display outdoors, and many of their works are for sale indoors. For most, this event will be the first exhibition entry on their CV and a very proud moment to remember. One of the best forms of encouragement for emerging artists is the sale of a work. I started buying artworks when I was a student and over the years these objects have added great pleasure and interest to my home and office. As encouragement for the development of new work, for the third consecutive year, Ron and Terrie Gomboc are awarding $6,000 for non-acquisitive Student Prizes.

I hope you enjoy the exhibition of highly accomplished sculptures by Sang-Wook Oh, and also the diversity of works by students, who at the beginning of their artistic journeys are learning to integrate their ideas with an ever widening choice of materials, techniques, forms, site and scale.
