FROM THE RECTOR 27 April 2014 Dear Friends, The gospel for this Sunday displays both doubt and faith. Having risen from the dead, nothing can now stop the Lord from joining with his own. He comes to give them the Spirit and its fruits: peace, joy

and the power to forgive sins. As for Thomas, who had demanded to see the Lord for himself before he would believe he was alive, he seems to say to the Christian of every generation: Yes, you can be sure, he is truly risen! You too can believe and live! Please continue to pray for Kathryn Fox who was baptised at the Easter Vigil. With every blessing, Fr Steven Salmon, Rector

Please pray for Oliver and Eliza, their parents and the i r godparents, as they rejoice in sharing with us the Christian faith. Anzac Day this year fell last Friday. Ex-service personnel of the parish are invited to wear medals today (27 April), being the closest Sunday.

Music notes for today’s Family Eucharist: The mass setting, Missa Sine Nomine 'Mass without a name', was written in 1992 by Peter Jewkes, organist of Christ Church St Laurence in Sydney. Instead of a communion motet this week we hear a chorale prelude on 'Komm, heilger Geist' 'Come, Holy Ghost', by the north German Baroque composer and organist, Dietrich Buxtehude (c.1637-1707). The recessional voluntary is another choral prelude, this time by the English-Canadian composer Healey Willan (1880-1968), organist of St Mary Magdalene's church in Toronto. His work is based on Melchior Vulpius' strong chorale tune, sung in English to the words, 'Good Christian men, rejoice and sing!'

Parish Council Meeting: Members are reminded that the next meeting has been scheduled for this Monday (28 April) at 7:30pm, a week later than usual St John’s Op Shop - deferred to Saturday 10 May. Please note this new date. Wedding Anniversary Congratulations to Ken and Judy Hayden (30th) Manly Hospital Pastoral Care Service needs volunteers! The service was developed by the hospital and local churches in co-operation, and is based on providing pastoral visitations by lay people to patients in hospital. Visitors also attend regular monthly meetings for support and ongoing education. For further information, please speak with Lynette Johnson or see the flyer on the lobby noticeboard. Cottage Counselling operates regularly in the Parish Centre with support from St John’s. Please pray for the service, the counsellors and their resources, giving thanks for their work, and that this important ministry may continue meeting the needs of the local community.
