Implementation of Sustainability Standards to meet SDGs
to guarantee that processes, products and servicesprovided by organizations support the three pillars ofthe SD: Environment, Economy, Social.
SSs may be developed by single businesses, businessassociations, environmental or social non-governmentalorganizations, or governments.• For example, Global G.A.P. (Good Agricultural Practices) is
a farm management certification scheme pioneered bysupermarkets
• ISO 26000 provides guidance to businesses and otherorganizations on social responsibility to improve theirimpact on workers, natural environments andcommunities.

One way to meet SDGsis implementing the requirements of Sustainability Standards (SSs)
Role of accreditation for the implementation of SD
All sustainability standards claims results in meeting one or more SDGs
How can we rely on the credibility of these claims?

Contribution of accreditation to the implementation of SD
Accreditation is an attestation of competence and impartiality of
conformity assessment bodies (CABs) to carry out specific conformity
attestment tasks.
These CABs include but are not limited to :
• bodies that certify management systems products and persons,
• bodies that undertake verification and validation,
• bodies that performs inspection,
• calibration, testing and medical laboratories,
• provideres of proficiency testing,
• producers of reference materials.
7
ACCREDIA contribute to meet SDGs through accreditation
Many CABs /LABS are accredited by ACCREDIA according to voluntary / mandatorystandards and owners’ schemes which are directly or indirectly related to one or more SDGs
2060 accreditations of which:• 365 CABs (certification, inspection, verification)• 1400 LABs (testing, medical, PTP – calibration , RMP)

Examples on how ACCREDIA supports specific SDGs
Let us make the example of SDG 7
Which is the role of ACCREDITATION in its framework?
Accreditation supports organisations and governements in the process of:• enhancing energy efficiency• improving economic perfomance, • Following a low carbon and low-
emission growth path• reducing consumption of resources• preventing unsafe, unhealthy or
environmentallly harmfully productsfrom entering the market place.

A new challenge: the Sustainable Development Management System
In consideration of such a wide diffusion and specificity of the manyexisting Certification Standards that deal directly or indirectly with theSustainable Development Goals, each one them having the potential tomeet one or more SDGs, the Italian Quality Infrastructure, whichACCREDIA is part of, acknowledged the need to develop a new generalcertification standard that may act as a common factor pertaining tothe different SDGs potentially applicable:
17
The Sustainable Development Management System (SDMS) of production and supply processes of the service
(pertaining to an organization and its value chain).
The Sustainable Development Management System
The new standard outlines the requirements of a sustainability management systemwhen an organization decides:
a) to demonstrate the sustainability of the product or service provided, through the sustainable management system of its processes and/or value chain, (from the cradle to the grave);
b) to demonstrate its commitment to support the Sustainable Development Goals applicable to its processes and/or value chain, in addition to the requirements of the clients, the applicable mandatory requirements;
c) to meet the expectations and increase the satisfaction of the interested parties including the future generations, through the effective application of the systemand continual improvement.
The SDMS can be used by any manufacturing supply chain organization or service provider that wants to guarantee the sustainability of the processes included in the scope of application.

An SDMS is an organizational model based on the commitment to support all thoseSDGs applicable to the company processes and/or value chain, in addition to the
clients’s requirements and the applicable mandatory requirements;
All the certifications already obtained are valued inputs to the SDMS
Significant issues for implementing the SDMS
Alignment with the High Level Structure (HLS) model of MS standard. Organization identity based on mission, vision, values and culture of
leadership (ISO 9004) Analysis of the context in which the organization operates Identification of current and future stakeholders and their expectations for
Sustainable Development, among which priority to be given for the future generations
PDCA to start from a comprehensive Sustainability Analysis to identify which SDGs are relevant and assess the progress of the associated SDG targets related to the processes and services to be certified
Implementation of a Sustainability Program to progressively meet the applicable SDGs and related targets
Preparation and periodical updating of a Sustainability Statement publicly available containing SDG data.
