Warren Platner Collection

The Platner Collection has proven to be one of the most enduring icons of Modernist

design. Warren Platner, an architect and designer who is known for his work on

the Ford Foundation headquarters, the Georg Jensen Design Center and the original

Windows on the World restaurant, worked in the offices of legendary designers Raymond

Loewy, I.M. Pei and Eero Saarinen before opening his own practice in 1967.

Reflecting a dramatic shift in cultural values, Modernism became more expressive in the 1960s.

In Platner’s own words, “I felt there was room for the kind of decorative, gentle, graceful design that

appeared in a period style like Louis XV.” However, Platner avoided an explicitly applied aesthetic,

seeking instead to “make the structure so the ornamental details are built into it as functional elements.”

With this in mind, Platner transformed steel wire into sculptural furniture, creating an elegant collection

of chairs, tables and stools with a base formed out of hundreds of vertical steel rods. Polished nickel

and bronze finishes offer the ultimate in timeless design. “A classic is something you look at often and

always accept as it is,” explained Platner. “You can see no way of improving it.” With unity, ingenuity

and attention to detail in both form and fabrication, the Platner Collection was introduced by Knoll in

1966 and has been in continuous production ever since.

The Platner Collection reflects the KnollStudio® commitment to timeless, enduring design, continuing

the Knoll legacy of producing furniture to the exacting standards of the designer and affirming our

unwavering belief in the power and utility of modern design.
