Proud to be locally owned and operated

What will you be getting up to this New Year’s Eve?

This is the time of year when Nelson really comes into its own. Visitors flock to our spec-tacular region to enjoy all that’s on offer; the balmy weather, boutique wineries and breweries, our pic-turesque rivers and beaches. Many resi-dents decide to stay put because actually there’s nowhere else as nice to be. As we approach the close of 2012 and get ready to welcome in another year, we can all look back proudly on what’s been achieved this year to make Nelson a better place. We have installed dramatic gateway sculptures at Neale Park and Kinzett Tce, rolled out the new NBus service,

opened the new and improved Orchard St community hous-ing in Stoke, upgraded Queen’s Rd and completed stage one of the multi-million dollar Maitai

Pipeline duplication. On top of all this in-cluding our day to day business, there’s been a huge amount of recov-ery work underway to restore our city to its former glory following last year’s devastating floods which came at

the worst possible time. Signs that a long, hot summer is on the way is welcome news to visitors and most Nelsonians I’m sure. I wish you all the very best of the season’s greetings, and a safe and happy holiday period.

It’s a great time of the year to be here in Nelson spending qual-ity time with friends and family. Something I certainly look for-ward to doing as I am sure most of you will.Unfortunately, it is also a time when calls for ser-vice to police, ambulance and fire increase due to traffic crashes or incidents involving injury inflicted during disorder and as-saults. It does not need an in depth analysis to realise that a lot of these calls for service are fuelled by the over consump-tion of alcohol and drugs. Each year, police, medical staff and public safety officials call for moderation when people are cel-ebrating these festive occasions. Recently there has been a con-

certed effort by police, the local authority and other partners in-cluding the hospitality associa-tion, to make our inner city safer for lawful users of the area. Sev-

eral initiatives have been implemented including enhanced CCTV and rigorous enforcement of the liquor ban provi-sions. It is important that if you intend to go into the CBD area, with the intention of consuming alcohol, you know the

area covered by the ban and what obligations and requirements are outlined in this bylaw.Maps showing the areas affected and times imposed can be found on the NCC website. Please have a safe and enjoyable break this summer.

After the extreme highs and lows of 2011, 2012 will go down as a year Nelson got back to nor-mality. It was a year of great successes, strong community spirit and exciting news for the business community. In 2011 we hosted the Rugby World Cup which was a great highlight for the city and just a few months later witnessed one of the worst disas-ters in its history with the December floods. But 2012 started well.In February it was announced that Tasman had the fastest growing population in New Zealand, with Nelson in third place. And what people we have living here! Here’s a very short list of some of the amazing people we spoke with this year.New Zealand’s oldest Olympi-an Ngaire Galloway, the Pearly Queen Shirley Miles who man-aged to raise $100,000 for the Nelson Hospice over ten years, Tony Simpson the Nelson-bred director of the Nelson movie Kiwi Flyer that had its world pre-miere in Nelson, Bill Reid who restored and flew a WWI bomber at Nelson airport, Rodney Boul-ton the Okiwi Bay man who after helping raise money for a defibrillator for the bay was saved by it just weeks later, “English” Bob Wren who fought Sanitarium over his right to sell the Eng-lish Weetabix and just last week a young man who sold his car and with the proceeds bought gifts for sick children at Nelson Hospital.Nelsonians also made their voice heard in 2012. In April, amalgamation of the two councils was voted against and in February we had 400 peo-ple take to the streets to protest a tightening up

of dog bylaws – due to the march the laws were revised – and most recently the board of Salis-bury School fought to keep it open.It wasn’t all positive though, the scrap at Waimea Village is a story we’ve followed from the start and will continue to take up column centimetres as its owners and residents remain in deadlock. But the region was also able to celebrate its suc-cess and Nelson Weekly was proud to be associ-ated with the Nelson Hospitality Awards back in May where the region’s top hospitality venues were recognised for their hard work. At those awards the Milton St Sprig & Fern won best b a r , it then went to the national competition

where it won the prize as best bar in all of New Zealand. On the sports fields our Tas-man Makos had a great sea-son, falling just short of the

Championship final. The Nel-son Pines volleyball team won

the NZ club championship, our Tasman Titans rugby league team won the South Island compe-tition and our multisport athletes again proved to be the best in the business. It’s also been a big year for Nelson Weekly, we’ve grown and now in our third year as your com-munity newspaper and we are stronger than ever. We’ve added a bunch of new features to the paper, including a great new website to keep our readers in Nelson and overseas better informed, a new masthead, puzzles, Your Voice column and more news and sport than ever before. It’s been a great year, Nelson Weekly has been proud to bring it to you each week and we hope you have a great summer. See you in 2013!

A retired Richmond couple have walked away with $5000 in their pockets after winning the fifth annual Shop ‘n’ Win competition.Tony and Doreen Connelly won after their en-try was drawn out of an incredible 67,000 that were submitted to the competition, which runs in retail stores around Richmond in the lead up to Christmas. This year the number of entries soared well above the previous years that the Waimea Weekly promotion has run.Tony’s winning entry was filled out at Raeward Fresh and he says he was shocked and “very pleased” win. After relocating to Nelson last year after the Christchurch earthquake to Stillwater Gardens Retirement Village the couple were excited to have won the competition out of the

blue.“We had no money when we came here and we didn’t know what to do or where to go. The peo-ple of Nelson have been so good to us and this is yet another blessing. We are always in Raeward Fresh so to win this is a nice surprise.”Raeward Fresh owner Justin Blackler says he was extremely pleased that the Shop ‘n Win prize had gone to one of his customers as he and his staff had strongly supported the promotion.“We got right in behind it and we are so pleased it went to such a lovely couple.”Justin won $2000 as part of the promotion and says he will be spending it on his staff. “I will ab-solutely be putting on a special Christmas shout for the team.”

Winners of the Shop ‘n’ Win competition and $5000 cash are Tony and Doreen Connelly, centre, with from left; Raeward Fresh owner Justin Blackler, store manager Janice Jennens and Waimea Weekly’s Sue Davies. Photo: Steve Page.

Free wireless internet in Richmond, NelsonWireless internet “hotspots” have been erected around Nelson and Tasman this summer for visitors to stay connected. The initiative is part of a New Zealand-wide trial, which involves more than 100 Telecom WiFi hot spots in popular summer regions throughout New Zealand, including Nelson. There will be six Telecom WiFi hotspots located in key holiday destinations including Havelock, Motueka, Nelson, Picton, Kaiteriteri and St Arnaud. Telecom is activating the service through existing Telecom telephone boxes in the selected regions, and in some cases by building WiFi access points into existing infrastructure such as local shops. Users will initially be taken through a short online registration process before their device automatically connects to the service each time thereafter.“There’s nothing like sharing your summer experience with loved ones even if you can’t be together. All you need is a New Zealand mobile number, with any provider, to stay connected,” says Ed Hyde, Telecom’s mobile’s general manager.

One of the free wifi hotspots, near Jubilee Park on Gladstone Rd in Richmond.

A big summer expectedNelson Tasman Tourism is “quietly optimistic” that this summer will buck previous trends, with more domestic visitors expected to arrive over the next few weeks.Chief executive Lynda Keene says the Great Taste Cycle Trail, Murchison’s white water experiences and the growing craft brewery industry are three keys to the region’s success this summer.Around 650,000 are estimated to visit Nelson each year and 60 per cent of those visitors come during the three months of summer. Lynda says there has been a decline in visitors to the region

over the past three years but that she was optimistic that it would change due to a rise in accommodation and activity booking trends. “We’re kind of reverting back to our normal visitor patterns because the Rugby World Cup last year created some displacement to domestic travel,” she says. “Our region is a summer holiday destination and without a doubt there was quite a significant impact with the flooding before Christmas last year with the Totaranui camping ground being only accessible by water. Feedback is that it’s definitely back on the map and we will look forward to welcoming back

all of the Cantabrians as well.”Lynda says there are different “clusters” of experiences that tourists seek in Nelson. Those can be broken down to the city-urban experience that also includes Tahunanui Beach, the boaties and hikers that want to participate in fresh water activities and go hiking in the Nelson Lakes and then the Mapua, Kaiteriteri and Abel Tasman experience. NTT was also buoyed by bookings from cruise ships to the region next year. Four cruise ships have already confirmed they will be coming in 2014, on top of the two confirmed for 2013.

Nelson residents and holiday makers are spoiled for choice when it comes to swimming spots. The usual question is do you go to the beach, the river or spend the day at the pool? Following last year’s flooding, all of the rivers in the Tasman District are now open again and the fine weather has made Nelson’s iconic beaches more popular than ever. Here is a list we’ve combined of the best places to go swimming this summer. The Roding River up Aniseed Valley has always been a popular swimming choice and despite being closed to the public for a month last year due to flood damage, it is already seeing plenty of visitors for the 2012/13 summer. Located just ten min-utes away from Richmond, motorists can access the river via Aniseed Valley Rd which is on the main highway south of Hope. There are three main picnic reserves, the Twin Bridges Reserve, the Busch Reserve and the White Gate Re-serve. Twin Bridges and Busch reserves are within walking distance of each oth-er, with the Twin Bridges Reserve being located inside the bend of the Roding River. The White Gate Reserve is one kilometre deeper into the valley. All re-serves have barbecue amenities and the area is now under a 12 hour alcohol ban from 7pm to 7am each day. There is nothing that says ‘Kiwi summer’ more than a day at the beach. Nelson’s three best swimming beaches are at Ta-hunanui, Rabbit Island and Kaiteriteri.

If you can make the 50 minute drive to Kaiteriteri then it’s definitely

worth it but for those people looking at something closer to town then Rabbit Island and Tahunanui Beach are always a winner. Both of the two offer barbe-cue amenities and public toilets and the beaches are free to swim in. Rabbit Island is 15 minutes drive from Richmond. The Tasman District Council has one public pool open all year round, the ASB Aquatic Centre in Richmond. It is located on Salisbury Rd and features a 25m lane swimming pool, a wave pool, lazy river, spa pools, hydrotherapy and children’s pools. Entry to the pool costs $7.20 for an adult, $5.20 for a school age child or university student with ID and $3 for a preschooler. The pool’s regular hours are 5:30am to 9pm every day. However, dur-

ing the first week after Christmas there will be varying hours. You can contact the pool staff on 543 9755.The best outdoor swimming pool com-plex in the region is the Nayland Park Pools, which features a 50m lane pool, toddlers pool and a 20m teaching pool with a slide. Its dive well is currently un-dergoing maintenance and could be out of action for the remainder of the sum-mer after a leak was noticed in one of the pipes. Nayland Park Pool is only open during the summer months with week-day working hours of 9am to 7pm and 9am to 8pm on the weekends. It is situated on Nayland Rd in Stoke. For further information you can phone 547 0292.

• Tahunanui beach is off State Highway 6 at Tahuna (turn at the lights next to KFC). It offers a free bbq and free swimming. Life-guards are on duty during peak times.

Get ready to enjoy a fun, family day in the sun at the races these summer holidays, when the Interislander Summer festival comes to town. The Nelson Harness Racing Club will host the annual summer races, the biggest event on our region’s social calendar attended by friends, families and local businesses at Richmond Park. The weekend is a wonderful chance to get amongst the fun and excitement of the races, enjoy taking a punt on your favourite horse and have a great time with friends and family in a fun atmosphere. Over 180 horses will race in the two day event and when the races kick off our own local trainers will be ones to watch says John McKenzie, President of the Nelson Harness Racing Club. The annual event will receive huge support from Canterbury trainers with the best of the best in the South Island heading to our region to participate in the event. The event will be held earlier than last year’s race days which attracted over 7500 people to allow more local families and holiday makers to celebrate at the event and John says this year is looking to be bigger and better than ever.“What a weekend it’s going to be, we are really looking forward to it. There is something for everyone to enjoy at the races this year with a wide range entertainment on offer from kid’s activities music, great food and of course the main event - the races.” The racing will kick off on Friday 4 January and Sunday 6 January. Each day will host around 10 races and there will be plenty of chances to place a bet and come out better off with full TAB facilities on hand. Take a chance on your favourite, beat the odds and have a blast cheering your horse over the finish line. Go for the crowd favourite or vote for the underdog because anything could happen.

The feature race for the event will be held on Sunday with the Nelson Pine Industries Nelson Cup up for grabs, and Friday will feature the Golden Edge Prelude race. Those that miss out on a winning horse will get a second chance with the lucky losing ticket draw offering a chance to win an Interislander family trip to Wellington and a family Pass to the Trentham Family Race Day

including a reserved table and picnic hamper. Place a bet on a horse and even if you lose the race you could still be in to win. The races are not the only reason to head down to Richmond Park on race day with a huge variety of entertainment planned for the whole family to enjoy. Local musical talent Fool’s Gold – featuring members

of The Peasants - will perform throughout the day and there will be loads of free entertainment for the kids including bouncy castles, face painting, balloon twisting and ‘kids go racing activities’, including kids races on the track. There will be something to keep everyone going throughout the day with plenty of local food

on offer from great coffee, chips, burgers, roast pork sandwiches as well as a great selection of wine, beers and non alcoholic beverages. You can bring your own food and drink for a budget friendly day out too, so park your family up with a picnic and enjoy a day relaxing in the sun.It wouldn’t be the races without taking a chance in the fashion stakes so get dressed up and enter in the Richmond Mall Fashion in the Field event on Sunday. Registrations will begin at 11am on the day at the Richmond Mall Fashion in the Field tent next to the TAB marquee centre track.

The fashion heats will be held behind the VIP Lindauer marquee. The best dressed female will take home some great prizes with a $1,000 Shopping Spree, a magnum of Lindauer and $200

Tens of thousands of people will load the boot up and descend on Kaiteriteri beach this summer with families from all around New Zea-land due to arrive on Boxing day to enjoy the Christmas and New Years break. If you’re a local or just visitng, you might want to head over and check out the festivities on offer at one of our region’s favourite beaches. Rob Guild the current Kaiteriteri campground and reserve manag-er says the bay is gearing up for a summer of fun and the local camp-grounds and motor camp is fully booked out until the end of January. With a golden beach, stunning views and nearby native bush tracks Rob says the opportunities are endless in the bay that so many flock to on their summer holidays.“It is a destination unlike any other in New Zea-land and so different to even our other Nelson beaches. You come over that windy hill and drop down to see this amazing golden sand and pure blue water. You can walk off the campgrounds and into the National Park, that’s pretty special.”Kaiteriteri hosts a range of outdoor activities such as mini golf, mountain biking, kayaking and water sports. Spend the day taking advan-tage of the many different adventures on offer from catamaran tours, day trips to Split Apple

rock, fishing, or just relaxing and sunbathing on the beach. “On on January 1 and 2 Motueka Ro-tary Club is hosting a one shot golf competition. Hitting into the estuary you’ll have a chance to grab $1000 in Abel Tasman Outdoors Ltd vouch-ers for a hole in one. Check out the famous an-nual Mr and Miss Kaiteriteri contest which will take place on the 2 January from 11am on the beach and head down and watch the annual wa-terskiing race on Saturday 5 January.

Kaiteriteri beach a summer hotspot

Mapua is set to buzz this summer now that the Mapua Wharf precinct is temporarily a pedes-trian only zone for a part of the season's summer holidays. The Mapua wharf area will be closed through to February 7 to all motorists aside from service ve-hicles and those launching boats. The idea to open the space up to the public and create a safer environment over the busy season has been welcomed by Mapua residents as the area is frequently used by families and cyclists. Reducing the amount of traffic in the area has made the area more enjoyable for everybody to use says Brian Ensor, chair of the Committee for the Mapua Water Front Precinct Advisory Group.Brian says the wharf precinct is extremely popu-lar over the holiday period and the vehicle ban is about enhancing the experience for visitors to the area. With the development of parking nearby and the increased use of both the wharf and Mapua Ferry over the summer Brian says the move has made sense to all users of the area.Tha Mapua Ferry is now a well-used feature along the Tasman Great Taste Trail and is a huge attraction for visitors says Brian.“The cycle trail and Mapua Ferry have really opened up the wharf area for a range of recrea-tional activities. There is cycle and scooter hire available and many people are catching the fer-ry over to swim at Rabbit Island or making the most of the great restaurants and boutique stores at the wharf.”With development continuing on the Waterfront park including the completion of the toilet block and shelter Brian says visitors and locals alike can look forward to using the wharf and park to its full potential this summer.

• Mapua is open 7 days to the public, has free parking and is approximately a 20 minute drive from Richmond. Follow State Highway 60 from Richmond and turn right onto Mapua Dr.

Last year Nelson declared itself the craft brewing capital of New Zealand and looking at the list of breweries in the region it’s hard to argue with the title.Nelson and Tasman have 12 craft breweries, services a growing number of bar taps dedicated to the local drops and this year Lonely Planet hailed the region’s craft beer trail. The trail is made up of breweries and bars that sell local beer and has become a tourist magnet ever since. But it’s not just Nelson’s recent history with beer that has impressed, as the craft beer website points out, Nelson and Tasman have a long history with beer: “Beer has been central to the local culture of the Nelson-Tasman region, dating back to the first New Zealand settlements in the 1840s. Early German settlers in Sarau found the Moutere to be an ideal location and climate to cultivate hops, and an extensive brewing tradition followed.”Many of these locally owned, family-run breweries and outlets welcome visitors for tours, sampling at the bar, having a meal or takeaway sales. Share a pint with locals, learn about our history and experience the wide range of unique beers. Whether you prefer an icy pilsner or a cask-pulled ale, you’ll find it in Nelson. Some can be reached by foot from your lodging, others along a nice cycle loop, and the rest are worth the drive. Here are some of the local breweries on the trail: Bays Brewing, 89 Pascoe St, Nelson, 547 8097 or www.baysbrewery.co.nz.Dales Brewing, 029 4445 143 or www.dalesbrewing.co.nz.Dead Good Beer, 03 548 3887 or www.deadgoodbeers.com.Founders Brewery, 87 Atawhai Dr, Nelson, 548 4638, www.foundersbrewery.co.nz.Golden Bear Brewery, 12 Aranui Rd, Mapua 540 3210 or www.goldenbearbrewing.comLighthouse Brewery, 21 Echodale Pl, Stoke or 547 0983.

Water Safety New Zealand is calling for a zero drowning toll this Christmas Holiday period. On average over the last five years ten people drown in New Zealand waters each official Christmas holiday period – which this year goes from 4pm Christmas Eve until 6am 3 January 2013. Last year, nine people lost their lives in the water during this time.Water Safety New Zealand CEO Matt Claridge says the official Christmas holiday week – when people flock to rivers, lakes and beaches around the country – is historically a high-risk time. “A greater number of people taking part in water based activity results in higher risk and more incidents, but if everyone makes safety a priority and remembers the basics - wear lifejackets, keep kids within arm’s reach, know your limits

and don’t drink alcohol when taking part in water based activity– then a zero toll is achievable.”Fishermen were over represented in 2011’s Christmas holiday toll with four men drowning while fishing.“It doesn’t matter whether you’re fly fishing in rivers, casting off rocks, or out in a boat, the safety requirements are the same. Take a mate, check the marine weather forecast and always wear a life jacket.”Matt says 86 people have drowned in our waters so far this year, and while the number is down on the same time last year, it’s still too high.“New Zealand has one of the worst drowning tolls in the developed world. If everyone is prepared, knows their limits and keeps an eye on their friends and family in and around the water, we can reverse the trend.”

NZs biggest bands coming to Tasman

Katchafire front man Logan Bell performing in Nelson two years ago. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Eight strong and straight out of the Waikato, Katchafire have been at the forefront of New Zealand reggae around ten years now. Fresh from touring the globe, front man Logan Bell was excited to be finally hitting the front in his own environment, with the group set to perform at the Riwaka Hotel on January as part of their NZ Summer Tour. “A lot of the places on the tour are quite significant to us. I’m from Opononi, which is up north, and a lot of these spots are places we’ve played before and the vibe was epic.”Concert-goers can expect new sounds since the last time Katchafire visited the region. Although it is early days in the recording process for their next album, Logan says the new music is an extension on what Katchafire has produced before. Katchafire recently toured Europe and South America while spending nine weeks of the year based in the United States. Brazil, known for its strong reggae base, has taken to Katchafire, who filmed a documentary there last year.

“We’ve been offshore more than we’ve been home. We’ve always led with our live show and it’s something people can’t burn, you know? It’s hard work doing this as a living, it’s full on, but that’s the dream.”The Riwaka Hotel will be the hub for all things music this summer with eleven of New Zealand’s top artists lining up in the space of just one week. The venue is just 37 minutes drive from Richmond and 52 minutes drive from Nelson City.

- The full list of the concerts at the Riwaka Hotel this summer are: Friday, December 28; Kora with The Nudge. Sunday, December 30; Six60 Summer Tour with David Dallas. Monday December 31; Shihad - Heavyweight Kings Of Rock. Wednesday, January 2; Katchafire with Ladi 6.Thursday, January 3; Jimmy Barnes - The Red Hot Summer Tour with Gin Wigmore.

Holidaymakers are being encouraged to bring their bikes to Nelson and check out the first official stage of the Great Taste Cycle Trail, which is now ready to go for summer. The Great Taste Cycle Trail will even-tually loop through the entire Nelson-Tasman region, enabling cyclists to make their way to all corners of the districts on just two wheels. But at its current stage, cyclists can pedal from the i-Site Visitor Centre on the corner of Trafalgar and Halifax St all the way to Mapua through the sce-nic coastal route, or through Brightwa-ter, finishing in Wakefield. A third seg-ment from the Riverside Café in Upper Moutere to Riwaka was signed off last week. Fiona Newey of the Nelson Tasman Cycles Trails Trust is expecting seven out of ten visitors to bring their bikes and venture onto the trail at some point. Thanks to significant govern-ment and council funding and hun-dreds of volunteer hours, stage one was opened last month. “We’ve just published our map bro-chure which is being distributed around the country, 30,000 of them. So we’re hoping people see it and want to come to Nelson.”The idea to construct a cycle trail through the entire Tasman District

was first thought of after two cyclists visited the Otago Rail Trail. “They looked at a number of options, talking to Marlborough, Murchison, Golden Bay and everywhere in be-tween.”Fiona says without the support of the volunteers this project would never have happened, a statement epito-mised by the hundreds of community group volunteers who constructed a board walk behind Lower Queen St in just one day.

“There’s a lot of very stressed people who deserve a holiday and that in-cludes the engineers and all of the con-tractors too. It’s just been massive.”

• The official starting point for the Great Taste Cycle Trail is at the i-Site on the corner of Trafalgar and Halifax St in Nelson. The ride to Mapua is expected to take two and a half hours via Rich-mond and Rabbit Island while the jour-ney to Wakefield should take approxi-mately 90 minutes.

On behalf of the DBFC I would like to welcome all the fishing holiday makers to Nelson. You are fortunate enough to have arrived when the fishing is nearing its best. The Top of the South is blessed with a mul-titude of fishing grounds and is just waiting for you to make the most of them. The long range weather looks extremely inviting but as always check the marine forecast before heading out.As always at this time of the year the boat ramps, beaches and water ways are always extremely busy. Take care to find out the lay of the land from the locals as their local knowledge and ad-vice will help enhance your day out. Make sure you are aware of local fish limits and sizes for specific areas, as they will dif-fer from your own location. If fishing in the Marlborough Sounds for blue cod please make yourself familiar with the strict laws regarding the taking of these fish. The laws will be heavily enforced by MAF over the holiday period.Tasman Bay has been produc-ing some excellent snapper and they are being taken out in the deeper water straight out from Nel-son. Head out into the middle of the bay in at least 15-17 metres of water, burley and stray line rigs with fresh baits, pillies or squid. The other al-ternatives are to fish in close to Rab-bit Island or the Boulder Bank with flasher rigs to target the smaller snapper. Please also note that from approximately the end of the Glen, including Cable Bay to Pepin Island is a marine reserve and a no fish-ing zone. Past here is Delaware Bay which has been fishing well for snap-

per and gurnard. Kahawai are about in prolific numbers this season and can be caught absolutely anywhere in the Top of the South. The Boulder Bank is due to go off anytime with good numbers of kingfish. So if you ever wanted to land one of these awesome fish, now is the time to do it. These fish don’t fight as hard as the ones in deeper water but all the same will take you to the cleaners if you don’t take it easy. Remember to adhere to speed re-

strictions when in close proximity to other users, observe local rules, wear life jackets, and check the ma-rine forecast before you go out and leave a trip report with someone. Remember that it is always the skip-per’s job to ensure the crews safety and safety of others at all times when on the high seas.On that note the DBFC wishes its members, locals and holiday makers alike, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. May the fish-ing gods smile upon you and keep a good solid bend in your rod.

Richard Powley and Steve White ready their motorcycles for the Nelson Classic & Vintage Mo-torcycle Show on January 5 and 6. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

The largest classic motorcycle club in the country will be holding its annual showcase on January 5 and 6 at the Stoke Memorial Hall. Each year the Nelson Classic & Vintage Motor-cycle Club puts on a display of motorcycles all owned by current members. Club rules restrict the machines to more than 25 years old, from all continents from all famous manufactures.Club member Steve White says there are ap-proximately 180 members in the club and a lot of them still ride the same motorcycles as they did in their 20s. The display is held each year because it is a good chance to get all of the members to-gether at once. This year’s show will be set-up to help visitors source classic motorcycles, as it usually brings

in more members. Club member Richard Pow-ley says it will be more of a “workshop” this year. “A lot of our members work in the motorcycle industry so we’re going to have stands showing what they do,” says Richard. “We’re going to have people selling parts, panel beaters, showing what the club does.” On Sunday there will be a swap-meet at the site from 9am to 12noon and anyone who wishes to sell motorcycle related material from bikes, clothing, books, parts are welcome.Doors open at 9am on both days and tickets for the event cost $5 for adults while children are free. Marty Kain will be hoping to make make his first HRV Cup appearance in Nelson when the Central Stags take on the Canterbury Wizards in two matches in January. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

CD can’t wait for games at Saxton Oval

Leo Calcasola performs a back flip over the bowl at the Neale Park skate park, which has been added to the Tasman Skate Park Tour this year. The tour begins in Takaka on January 5 from 2pm with the Mapua date set for Saturday January 9. The tour will also make its way to usual venues such as Brightwater, Motueka, Richmond, and Tapawera with Wakefield being another new inclusion. The Nelson leg will be held on Friday January 25 from 5pm. Photo: Jimmy Jay Wright.

Marty Kain hasn’t been reminding his coach that the two upcoming HRV Cup matches could be the first time he’s played domestic cricket in his hometown. The 24 year old all-rounder is hoping his performances will do the convincing instead. “Oh it’d be brilliant. I’m sure my family would be really proud and that my mates will be here giving me plenty of abuse from the sidelines,” he says. The former Waimea College cricketer left Nelson when he was just 15 years old to pursue a cricket scholarship in Christchurch. Now back in his city of birth, Marty is juggling his new job as a real estate agent with his cricketing career and he’s ticking off his goals both on and off the pitch. He has played in all of the bottom-placed Stags’

first HRV Cup matches so far. But one thing that has eluded him during his domestic career is playing at Saxton Oval. However, that could all change on January 1 and 3 with the side set to take on the Canterbury Wizards in a double header. “As long as I can go well in the next few games then I might get the opportunity. I played the first two twenty20s and this is obviously a spinner-friendly wicket with big boundaries as well. It should make a difference to getting hit out of the park in Napier by Jesse [Ryder].”Marty believes Central Districts need to win six or seven games to make the playoffs, but they are certainly not out of contention just yet. The side could be buoyed by the return of Blackcap Ross Taylor who is expected to be back in time for the two Nelson fixtures. Both matches begin at 2pm.

The task couldn’t be harder for the Nelson Falcons, who face last year’s defending champions in their inaugural match. But despite the all-important clash against Canterbury United on January 13 and the announcement that Nelson has bid for a senior team, youth coach Davor Tavich is certainly not feeling the added pressure.A reasonably successful pre-season trip to the North Island gave the Falcons their two first victories and it was those results that have given the team confidence that they deserve to be in the ASB Youth League. Cory Brown and Ross McPhie will have no part in the Falcons’ first season, being called into the New Zealand Under-17 team instead. But it is the experience of two overage players, captain Mark Johnston

and goal keeper Coey Turipa that will hope to carry the youngsters. “There’s a lot of young boys that are promising but the two senior boys are probably going to be called upon a lot. It’s good for the boys to learn from them and the work ethic from the two senior boys is amazing and the other guys just feed off it,” says Davor. Davor believes the Canterbury match will be the toughest of the campaign with a number of their players already boasting ASB Premiership experience with the Canterbury United senior team. But Nelson’s strength will be its unity, according to Davor, who believes the fact most of the Falcons have played together for their individual schools and clubs for a number of years will make them gel a lot quicker.

• The Wedding Party – This party wanted to get to the light house, a great venue for photos so why not. When asked how they were get-ting there my informant was advised the ferry would be soon. The ferry turned out to be a 6 meter runabout with two people on board, eleven more climbed on and away they went. Well I am pleased to say capsize did not oc-cur however I am prepared to bet there was not 13 lifejackets on board. At $200 a time that could spoil a days outing. I am mindful of the recent drownings in Auckland when a 6 meter overloaded runabout capsized. “It was on the bucket list” I was advised - the kick the bucket list - four young people decided to take a single sit on top kayak, a blow up single raft, and get across to the light house. Well as it happens it all started to go wrong on the way back. The wind got stronger from the south, the tide started to flow more quickly and a ship just happened along in a major shipping port. By now our intrepid explorers were realising the error of their judgement- stupid- is how I described it to them. When finally out of the water young Olivia could hardly stand up. The cold is a silent killer and I would have given Ol-ivia another 15 to 30 minutes and I might have been writing a different kind of story, Speaking of cold , that’s how I left all the mood of all four when I suggested it could be $400.00 each in fines for the by-laws they had broken (or was it that I suggested I knew their parents) … but it’s not like me to tell. • The kayaker fishing in the cut, the runabout fishing in the cut, as the ship comes through. Suicidal, I doubt it, simply stupid I am sure.
