The Cathedral Parish of St. Raphael is the merger of three historic parishes located within a few blocks of the Capitol Square.

Buildings at Holy Redeemer and St. Patrick provide the current facilities for the parish. Mass is offered every day in both churches. The parish rectory is at the Holy Redeemer site, while the offices are at the St. Patrick location.

Old St. Raphael Cathedral was destroyed by arson in 2005. Bishop Morlino has announced his intention to erect a new cathedral on the same site. In the meantime, an outdoor Way of the Cross is located there.

Rosary March This Sunday, October 1st The 82nd Semi-annual Rosary March will be held this Sunday, October 1st, at Holy Redeemer Church, beginning at 2:00 pm. The 15-decade ro-sary will be prayed in procession around the block and inside the church. Fr. Eric Nielsen, pastor of St. Paul University Catholic Center will lead this event. After the march, Fr. Nielsen will give a homily, fol-lowed by Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Lunch will be served.

Parish SVdP Meeting and Social Next Sunday The Cathedral Parish St. Vincent de Paul Conference will have a meeting and social next Sunday, October 8th, 6:30 pm at the Memorial Un-ion. The Beacon Tour for the Cathedral Parish

The Beacon — the day shelter and resource center for the homeless — will open at 615 E. Washington Avenue in mid-October. A tour is being offered to our parish on Sunday, October 15th at 1:00 pm ( — before The Beacon is in operation). The facility is located only about three blocks from St. Patrick, so a group can easily walk there after the 11:00 English Mass. Members of the Parish Conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Soci-ety will be taking the tour; other parishioners are warmly invited to join them. If you would like to do so, please call the office to RSVP — the Beacon would like an idea of how many people to expect. There will also be a public open house at The Beacon on Friday, Octo-ber 13th from 2:00 until 6:00 pm.

Providing Lunch at the Beacon We are exploring the feasibility of Cathedral Parish members provid-ing lunch at The Beacon one day each week. Cooked and frozen food is being provided — it needs to be collected, cooked and served. If you might be interested in helping with this project, please call the parish office at 257-5000.

One Faith, One Parish, My Share Thanks to all who participated in the in-pew process to encourage par-ish support last weekend. Cards filled out by parishioners and friends totaled 321 — 163 from the English Masses, 158 from the Spanish Masses. Of these, 48 were newly registering as parishioners (with an equal number coming from the English and Spanish Masses) This was a good result! Friends of the Cathedral Parish (continuing and new) totaled 34. As for giving preferences, 43 parishioners indicated interest in EFT contributions (33 continuing, 10 new) and 9 households were in-terested in credit card giving (7 continuing, 2 new). Several people indicated interest in using the giving kiosk. Those who newly registered in the parish using those in-pew cards last week should be getting a welcome letter soon. In its October meeting, the Parish Finance Council will be discussing what else might be done to encourage parish support, but we are finished with efforts during the Sunday Mass for this year. Growing our population of registered parishioners will con-tinue to be a priority for us. Registration can always be done on line — through the button at the bottom right corner of the homepage of the parish website — isthmuscatholic.org. The Welcome Table will continue to be featured once a month after each English Mass.

Visiting the Homebound There is an opening for an individual or couple to bring Holy Com-munion to people in the Capitol Lakes Community, located in down-town Madison. The commitment would be one Sunday morning per month. Please contact Deacon Raymond Lukesic at Rmlukesic@aol.com.

Encountering Jesus Series The Encountering Jesus series gives people prime opportunities to en-counter the Person of Jesus and how He corresponds to our deepest de-sires for happiness. Through people sharing their own experiences of living an encounter with Jesus, meditations on different encounters be-tween Jesus and others in the Gospels, video presentations, and lively discussions, we all will be invited to encounter the Lord Jesus more deeply in our own lives. All adults are welcome to join us Tuesdays, 6:30 pm at St. Patrick Church!

Catholicism 101 We offer a monthly 3-session overview of the Catholic Faith for adults at St. Patrick Church that occurs every other month. The series is intended especially for (1) those seeking a basic introduction to Christianity and/or the Catholic Church, (2) parents with a child to be baptized, and (3) couples preparing to be married in the Church. Session I will next be offered Tuesday, November 7th, with sessions II and III on the following two Tuesday evenings. Sessions begin at 6:30 pm.

PARA REFLEXIONAR

Amar al enemigo 1. En los Evangelio, Jesús sigue enseñándonos sobre la nueva justicia. En ella se contrapone la ley judía a las exigencias cristianas. Hoy nos ha-bla sobre el amor a los enemigos. La ley judía exigía amar sólo al próji-mo: “amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo”. Significa amar al que está cerca, al que vive conmigo, al hermano, pariente, amigo. En cam-bio, el judío no está obligado a amar al que se encuentra lejos de él, lejos interior o exterior-mente. Sobre todo, no ha de amar al enemigo personal, al enemigo de su pueblo (p.ej. pue-blos vecinos hostiles), al enemigo de Dios. Ésta es la ley judía. 2. Porque al cristiano se le exige mucho más

que al judío. Jesús habla muy claro sobre ello, en el Evangelio: “Amad a vuestros enemigos, haced el bien a los que os aborrecen y rezad por los que os persiguen y calumnian”. El amor al enemigo, es el signo del verdadero cristiano, es lo que debe distinguirlo de los demás. En eso tenemos que imitar a Dios-Padre: Él trata igual a buenos y malos, da sus dones a justos e injustos, no distingue entre san-tos y pecadores, porque todos son sus hijos queridos. 3. Parece que Jesús no conoce más que una ley, la ley del amor, y que saca de ella todas sus consecuencias, y hasta los últimos detalles. Este rigor del Señor, a algunos los entusiasma y a otros los llena de indigna-ción. Y a nosotros, ¿nos ha entusiasmado o nos ha indignado Jesús con sus exigencias? Esto sería, por lo menos, una señal de que las hemos en-tendido. Porque lo peor que podría sucedemos es escucharlas con unos oídos tan distraídos y tan habituados, que ni siquiera nos impresionaran. Es grave escuchar la palabra de Dios y rechazarla. Pero, ¿qué decir de los que la aceptan, la aclaman litúrgicamente, y ni siquiera se dan cuenta de ella? Para los que no creen en Jesús, todavía queda una oportunidad: el futuro sigue abierto para ellos y pueden convertirse. Pero, ¿qué pasa con aquellos que se imaginan que creen y que, sin embargo, ni siquiera se les ocurre pensar que podrían y que deberían cambiar? 4. Las exigencias duras de Cristo son para nosotros palabras de salva-ción únicamente cuando empiezan por hacemos daño: ¡Amar a los enemigos, cuando resulta ya tan difícil amar realmente a los que nos aman! ¡Hacer el bien a los que nos odian, cuando nos cuesta ya tanto po-ner buena cara a los que nos hacen el bien! ¡Rezar por los que nos persi-guen y calumnian, si apenas nos tomamos tiempo para rezar por los nuestros! En cuanto a presentar la otra mejilla y ofrecerle nuestra camisa al que ya nos ha quitado el saco, no será una exageración que ninguna persona con sentido común piensa practicar. 5. En una palabra: estos consejos del Señor atentan contra toda nuestra realidad humana. La ley de este mundo, después de más de 2000 años de cristianismo, sigue siendo el “ojo por ojo, diente por diente”. Parece que a la violencia sólo se puede responder con la violencia. Pero la verdad es que así no se consigue nada. La espiral de la venganza, del odio y de la violencia se irá adelante indefinidamente. Hay que salir de este cerco. Hay que romper ese círculo vicioso de actos de violencia con un “hecho nuevo”. Hay que adoptar una actitud distinta de la del adversario.

6. Feliz el que sabe dar el primer paso para acercarse. Porque no hay nada mejor que, de repente, en un conflicto uno perdone al otro, abando-ne su posición, deje de devolver el golpe. No hay más que una salida: que uno de los dos tenga la idea prodigiosa de comenzar a amar al enemigo. Cuando se recibe un bofetón en la mejilla y se devuelve otro, éste no es más que el eco del anterior. Pero si el que lo recibe no lo de-vuelve, sino que perdona, entonces hace aparecer sobre la tierra algo inesperado. Si tomamos a alguien su saco, podemos decir de antemano que nos negará la camisa. Pero si en lugar de negarla nos la da, entones quedaremos estupefactos, porque es una cosa totalmente nueva, impre-vista. Lo que se nos pide es hacer algo nuevo en nuestra vida, ser creado-res en el amor, no dejarnos esclavizar por el pecado. Significa convertir el enemigo, el adversario en un hermano. Significa acercamos a él, hacerlo prójimo, amarlo como a sí mismo. Significa descubrir en el enemigo, co-mo en cada hombre, a Jesucristo mismo. 7. Queridos hermanos, el cristianismo no es una religión fácil. Ser un cristiano auténtico exige sacrificio, heroísmo, renuncia al odio, al rencor y a la venganza... Examinémonos, por eso: • ¿Cuál es nuestra reacción a calumnias, ofensas e injusticias? • ¿Reaccionamos con odio, rencor, venganza, resentimientos? • ¿O logramos comprensión, aceptación, perdón y olvido? ¡Pensémoslo un momento!

LOS SACRAMENTOS

Requisitos para Bautismo

Padres y padrinos deben asistir a una platica pre-bautismal por lo menos un mes antes del Bautismo. Llamar a María a la oficina para anotarse en las clases.

Los padres, si es la primera vez que bautizan en la Parroquia de la Catedral, o ha pasado mas de 3 años desde la ultima vez que bautizaron, deben recibir las clases pre-bautismales.

Los padrinos, si son pareja, deberán pre-sentar copia del acta de su matrimonio ca-tólico. Recuerden que las personas que no estén casadas por la Iglesia y vivan juntas como pareja o familia no pueden ser padri-nos de Bautismo. Si los padrinos no son pareja, pero tienen sus respectivas parejas y no son casadas por la iglesia, tampoco pueden ser padrinos.

Las personas que piensan ser padrinos,

deben ser católicos practicantes: Bautizados católico, Confirmados, asistir frecuentemen-te a Misa, acudir al Sacramento de la Confe-sión y poder recibir la Sagrada Comunión.

Después de haber recibido la charla, de-

ben ir a la oficina parroquial llevando los

siguientes documentos: Copia del acta de nacimiento del niño(a), Copia del acta de Matrimonio Católico de los padrinos, constancia que los padrinos han recibido las charlas pre bautismales. Copia de documento de identidad con foto de pa-dres y padrinos.

Los padrinos deben ser miembros inscri-tos de alguna parroquia católica, y hacer firmar un formato, que se les entregará el primer día de clases, por su párroco.

Requisitos para Matrimonio

Los novios deben presentar: A) Acta de bautismo actualizada para matrimonio; B) Copia del acta de nacimiento. D) Si están casados por lo civil, presentar co-pia del acta; E) Acta de confirmación.

En caso de que a alguno de los contrayen-tes le faltara algún sacramento, por favor llame a la oficina parroquial para mayor información o inscribirse en el programa de educación religiosa para adultos.

El Rosario completo se recitará afuera, y adentro se le ofrecerán flores a María, será la homilía y Bendición del Santísimo Sacramento. Des-pués del Rosario están todos invitados a un pequeño almuerzo en el comedor. Están todos invitados.

Muéstrale tu Talento a Nuestra Madre Parece mentira pero dentro de poco diciembre ya esta cerca y con él la bella celebración a nuestra Madre de Guadalupe. Por eso te invitamos a que veas qué TALENTOS te ha dado el Señor y se los ofrezcas en este día especial a Su madre: ¿Cantas, recitas, tocas un instrumento musical, perteneces a un grupo folclórico, etc.? La Parroquia de la Catedral te invita a que honres a nuestra Madre del Cielo con tus talentos el próxi-mo lunes 11 y martes 12 de diciembre, cuando celebraremos la Festivi-dad de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. Si te gustaría participar llama a la oficina parroquial, antes del viernes 10 de noviembre, de martes a viernes y danos tu nombre, numero telefónico y cualidad que tienes.
