26th April: Carry-A-Bag Day! By Caroline Mannings, village resident As you will probably have heard in the news recently plastic carrier bags are causing many environmental problems around the world; such as harm to birds, animals and plant life. They are also filling up our landfill sites, as they do not all degrade very quickly. In Minster, Ben’s Supermarket alone gives out approximately 1500 free carrier bags a week and the village shops spend a total of £2,600 a year on purchasing carrier bags that they give out for free. In an attempt to save the environment and our local shopkeeper’s money I would like to encourage residents to re- member to bring their own shopping bags and not to rely on the free ones. On the 26th April there will be reusable, folding bags for sale. Some of the local school children will have made their own shopping bags and hopefully will encourage their parents to use them. I would really appreciate your support on this day and hopefully in the future we can reduce the number of free carrier bags being given out by shopkeepers. Stop Press Minster Bakers We recently heard a rumour that the bakers was closing down, so we went to investigate and found this is not the case. Bruce Trent the baker would like to thank all his customers for their support and assures us that he is fully committed to staying in Minster. However the shop and café will only open on a Saturday from 29 th March. Anyone who wants to place a regular or a one off order for collection on Saturdays can phone Bruce on 821557 leaving their order details and phone number on his answer- phone, if there is any query he will ring you back. Shortly he hopes to have order sheets outside the shop that people can fill in and put through the letter box and he also hopes to have a presence on the Internet. If you have a last minute need or forget to order there will be plenty for sale in the shop on Saturdays but to be sure it is best to pre-book. We will be running an article on the history of the bakery in Minster and Bruce’s plans for the future in a later issue. For now we are simply pleased that that the rumours appear to be unfounded and that Bruce is planning to stay and Minster will not lose one of its assets. Lets hope people continue to support the bakers and the other businesses in Minster. Remember it’s - Use them or Lose them!!! Flooding In Minster In previous issues of Minster Matters we have highlighted the problem of flooding in the Watchester Lane area, and Minster generally. Minster Parish Council’s Policy Committee recently met to consider the possibility of Minster having its own Flood Risk Committee. The committee would have a far ranging brief to include; Inspection of and monitoring the capabilities of the current system Identification of risk areas Setting up an alert / response system should a problem occur or be identified. It is essential that Minster takes a proactive stance on this issue. There is a need to identify who is responsible for clearing the relevant ditches and drains and ensuring that those responsible fulfil their obligations and thereby reduce the chances of our residents being the victim of flooding. Do you live in an area which has been flooded and have a history of the problem? Do you have knowledge of how drainage systems work? Do you have knowledge of the history of the drainage in Minster? If so would you like to volunteer to assist, or provide your information to, this committee? Could you please contact the Parish Clerk, Kyla Lamb, 01843 821339, e-mail [email protected] or leave a letter at the library. Below are examples of some of the problems already identified and the council are already working to ascertain responsibility for their clearance. The committee would assist the council in chasing those responsible. Firstly the ditch just the other side of the rail crossing near Watchester Lane. A drain passes under the crossing then feeds into this ditch. As you can see it needs clearing, but who is responsible ? Secondly a ditch at the end of the row of houses in Watchester Lane (opposite Glebe Court on the same side as the horse field). As you can see the pipe that feeds water away from Watchester Lane into the ditch system is broken and already half blocked. Again who is responsible? Here we are with issue 91 and we can report more great feedback on our audio discs, and a further 2 people benefiting from them this month.

We have a couple of good offers from the Express by Holiday Inn (formerly The Prospect) on our centre pages, so take a look, it could be to your advantage.

Thanet District Council have at long last made a decision on the future of green waste collections and we have details on this elsewhere in the magazine. (see page 6)

There has also been a new planning application put forward by the Abbey Trustees for a change of use for the former museum site, again see small article elsewhere in this issue. (see page 5)

Someone in the ‘E Team’ obviously took their eye off the ball, as Computer Corner has been hijacked by an outsider, but never fear Itsma Hobby will be back next month, assuming the ransom is paid and we can manage to get him on a flight from his enforced exile in the Caribbean. So please accept our apologies, but, because of this, there are no free software offerings this month.

Talking of taking an eye off the ball reminds me that over the next half term and beyond there are quite a few opportunities for the budding soccer stars in the village to get in some worthwhile practice at the All Weather Pitch, as there are a number of adverts within this issue offering various coaching sessions. (see page 11)

By the time this issue ‘hits the streets’, Archies, the new fish and chip shop next door to the post office, will have opened for business, and Minster Matters wishes them well in their venture. We have tried to speak to someone prior to going to print but on the occasions we visited the premises the new occupiers were not there to talk to us. So hopefully we will be able to get an interview and some background details to publish next month.

Maybe, by the time you read my column next month, we will also have new occupants in the Post Office, as Rosemary and Don have been on tenterhooks, for a number of months now, awaiting confirmation that their move was ‘on’. The latest from Don was that it is hoped that their move will take place in Mid April, so should they not be here for the next issue, we at Minster Matters wish them all the very best in their retirement and are sure they will be sadly missed by the many residents who used their shop on a regular basis.

Further to the ‘Stop Press’ on the front page, we also received an anonymous email on the same subject which went as far as alleging that there was perhaps a vermin problem at the bakery, however we have checked with Environmental Health, as the anonymous writer suggested, and we were told that their department have no problems with these premises and that they are checked on a regular basis. So please don’t believe everything you may hear or read.Well space is running short, so on closing, I will just say, if you live at the lower end of the village please

give some thought to signing up for the Flood Watch Committee, as mentioned on the front page of this issue. That’s it ! Oh where’s Zac?

There will also be a Grand raffle and of course you must bring your own “Liquid Refreshments”. Remember the more you can carry, the more you get to drink. ‘Bring-It-On’

Community Warden, Steve TaylorI hope you all enjoyed the Easter break and like me are looking

forward to some better weather with spring on the horizon. At around this time of year we often get visits from traders looking

for work such as gardening, tree cutting and house repairs. My advice on this subject is always to say NO to doorstep callers, with all the problems that come with accepting off the cuff quotes and any conse-quent works carried out. Most reputable traders do not need to cold call. If in doubt give me a call and I will do some checks where possible.

While on the subject of reporting things, there have been a number of vehicles damaged in recent weeks. I was aware of about three or four occasions but apparently there have been quite a lot more, many of which weren’t reported to me or the police. If things, no matter how trivial they may seem at the time, are not passed on it becomes difficult for the authorities to deal with. Also, by reporting it the police and myself, we can ensure that the right resources can become available. Remember, we can’t deal with what we don’t know about.

You may have seen the article in MM about the Warden’s team getting the gold award for the work we did last year with some of the youngsters in East Kent on the subject of under age drinking and I’m sure you remember that the MINSTARZ were the eventual winners. Well I’m on the look out for volunteers to step forward and help set up a scout group in Minster. We have a very hard working team of people working with the cubs, but there is nowhere local for this group to go on to, so come on I know there are some of you out there with all the right skills to help get this up and running. There are so many benefits in encouraging the young to join these groups and these days they can even get some recognized qualification that can help them in the future when they are seeking employment. Anyone interested can contact me on my normal number and I will put them in touch with the right people.

Oh, by the way there is still a good supply of doggy-bags available from the vets, the attic and of course from me!!! Don’t forget “BIN IT…. DON’T LEAVE IT”

Former Museum Site Planning ApplicationThe Trustees of the Abbey have submitted a planning application for

a change of use of the barn on the former museum site to ‘Non Residential Hospitality’ and a further application to add 8 velux windows to the roof of the same building. The complex is to be known as Parkminster and further information can be obtained by visiting the

Abbey website at:http://www.minsterabbeynuns,org/news.html

and following the Parkminster link.

GREEN WASTE COLLECTION - NEW SERVICEThanet DC are introducing a new green waste collection scheme, for

which householders, who want to be a part of it, will be expected to pay, as the council has no statutory duty to collect garden waste free of charge. This decision was taken as many households do not have gardens and many compost at home., therefore TDC have decided that Council Tax should not be used to fund a service which many people could not use.

The scheme will mean the introduction of a Green lidded 240ltr wheelie bin (equivalent to 5 standard refuse sacks). Collections will be fortnightly, and householders can have more than one bin but each will incur the same charges (see below). There are no refunds available on this service if you decide it isn’t for you.

Only bins carrying the current coloured sticker complete with serial number will be emptied, and all waste must be inside the bin with ‘the lid closed’ nothing outside of the bin will be collected. You can put the follow-ing into the bin: Weeds, hedge trimmings, small twigs and branches (less than 2.5cm in diameter), grass cuttings, flowers, plants and leaves. If a bins contents are found to be ‘contaminated’ with anything else it will not be emptied. All waste must be put into the bin loose, no plastic bags, flowerpots, food waste, soil, stones, rubble or branches/logs over 2.5cm (1”) diameter.

MINSTER-IN-THANET W.I.

Our ever-growing group met in the Village Hall on March 11th. It was lovely to see Enid Chidwick with us again, also an-

other new member and two visitors were welcomed. The New Year Dinner at St. Augustine’s Golf Club has been de-

clared a ‘winner’ and there’s talk of repeating the experience sometime before next New Year !

True to W.I. principles, members were asked for ideas for a ‘Healthy Life Style’ picnic.

Suggestions are also required for a Minster W.I. Float to be entered at the Flower Show on July 19th. Some have already been whispered about e.g. ‘Calendar Girls’, wonder what that means?

Our Secretary is making enquiries at the BBC about attending the Alan Titchmarsh Show next year.

Plans are afoot to supply our own entertainment at the next Christ-mas party! - it’s never too early to plan. So ‘turns’ are being sought. Musicians, actresses, tap dancers?? Watch this space.

Pat Foreman spoke about The Dogs Trust and the wonderful work it does. She appealed for donations of tinned food and volunteers to knit dog-coats.

Maura Pell reported on another worth-while course on ‘Machine Over-locking’ for flat seam edging, lace inserts etc. at Denham College.

The Salutation Garden at Sandwich is the venue for the Sun-shine Club in April. A group will attend the Albion Townswomen’s Guild meeting on April 7th. A Beetle Drive will be held in the Vil-lage Hall Committee Room on April 15th. The Coffee and Chat morning is on April 17th, all villagers welcome. A Wine and Wis-dom evening will be held on April 26th, call Ann Wilks on 821152.

Our own member, Tina Parker, left us lost in wonder when she spoke about and displayed the beautiful quilts she makes. Each one is exquisite in design and workmanship. Intricate geometric shapes, flow-ers, leaves and animals almost all hand sewn and designed by Tina her-self, one design taken from a tiled floor that she saw! Tina started quilting 18 years ago. An early design was based on the fairy story ‘The Princess and the Pea’ from whence came the title of the talk.

Next month’s meeting is on April 8th. The Speaker will be Joan Ward on Felt Making.

New Parking Restrictions At SomerfieldSome people may have seen the new

signs down the dead end road at the side of Somerfield. The un-clamping fees are steep so you have been warned !

The landowner has introduced the charges to deter people parking their ve-hicles and then dumping their rubbish by the side of the road. The area is a lot

cleaner up there thanks to Mr Ed Spanton sending in a cleaning team. There is still a bit up there but it looks a lot better. Lets hope it stays that way.

MINSTER BOWLS CLUBNews and Forthcoming Events

Our members are looking forward to their second year in the new pavilion and hoping that it will be as successful as the first. On the playing side, results have been very favourable. New friends have been made, teams from Kent and Essex have visited us for matches and our new beginners course has brought ten new members who are looking forward to trying the outdoor game when the new season starts.

On the social side, we enjoyed Dinners, Parties, Quizzes and a Race Night. Ballroom Dancing classes were also run through the Winter months.

In January a dinner with entertainment raised £475 for the Hospice and £100 for the Church Choir.

Last years Open Day for non-bowlers raised £400 for various charities. This year the Open Day will be held on Sunday 22nd June and we are hoping we will top that figure as we have W.S. Cole, Funeral Directors, sponsoring the event. They will be presenting cups to the two winning teams. Anyone wishing to enter a team of 4 players [they must not be a member of any Outdoor Bowls Club] please contact Brian Davis on 821196.

The new outdoor season begins on April 12th, weather permitting, with a full fixture book of well over a hundred matches arranged.

Anyone wishing to join us, experienced or beginner, please contact Ken or Pam Wooldridge on 823672.

FRIENDS OF KENT CHURCHESANNUAL SPONSORED BIKE RIDE AND WALK

This event has been running for over 20 years and this year promises to be a really successful day.

The event takes place on Saturday 13 September 2008 from 10am to 6pm.

Over 700 churches across Kent will be involved, welcoming riders and walkers, often with refreshments. Money is raised through sponsorship and is shared between your nominated church and the Friends of Kent Churches, who give grants for church repairs. Last year more than £140,000 was raised.

Plan your own route, long or short, flat or hilly, challenging or relaxed, whatever suits you.

The FA Tesco Football Skills Coaching Sessions are coming to Minster again for

April Half Term

As the Community Champion for Tesco, I will be coordinating the event. The partnership with the Football Association is part of our get active com-munity plan to get 2 million children active by 2012. In February this year we helped 128 children receive coaching sessions at Minster, and I am delighted that because its initial success, they will be available during every school half-term.

The training, by the Football Association, and organised by Tesco Broadstairs Extra, will take place over two days, Monday 7th and Tuesday 8th April, between 10am and 3pm, at the Min-ster artificial football pitch. The training will be divided into three different age groups, five to six year olds, seven to nine year olds and ten to eleven year olds, with boys and girls welcome to each of the training sessions.

To register there is a freephone booking line – skills hotline – for parents to book their children onto sessions. The freephone number is 0800 121 4836, or pick up a leaflet from your nearest Tesco store. Places cannot be booked in store.

Fresh coffee Speciality teas Delicious cakes SandwichesLight lunches Bacon rolls...and all the gossip!

We have discovered a new service that may be of use to the residents of Minster.

They have been described as “Citizens Advice Bureau on wheels” and offer a confidential home visiting advocacy service for people over 60 years of age living in Kent.

The word they don’t use though is advice, as it is easy to give the wrong advice!

Trained volunteers visit clients and provide them with the options available to them and let the client make the decision.

The organisation uses trained volunteers to visit people in their own homes and help that person to express their needs either for themselves or with the assistance of the visiting advocate.

Their aim is simple, to leave the older person stronger and more able to cope than when they first asked for help. Bear in mind not everyone is capable of representing

themselves even before we get older!

So are you over 60? Do you need help filling in benefit forms? Do you need help to make a complaint? Are you unsure about making a fuss about poor service? Have you suffered an injustice at the hands of central or local government? Is your landlord keeping to his tenancy agreement? There is no need to suffer in silence; avolunteer from CROP

is just a phone call away. All volunteers are police checked to enhanced level to deal

with vulnerable or elderly people and all carry identity cards. The volunteers are trained to a high standard and attend regular training sessions.

CROP is a charity (No.1087538) and has the backing of KCC Adult Social Services.

You can contact CROP by phoning 01227 789777 or e-mailing [email protected] or visit their web site www.cropkent.org.uk

They also have a freepost address that you can write to them to and not need a stamp.

Freepost RLZS-LGUR-CXAG CROP CANTERBURY CT1 2UA

Canterbury office covers the East Kent area from Isle of Sheppey to Capel-le-Ferne and inland areas.

Crop also has branches in Ashford and Maidstone covering other parts of Kent.

*** Can you spare any time to help this worthwhile project? As the service extends they are looking for volunteers willing to go out and visit people in their homes. You will receive regular top class training. Mileage and out of pocket expenses are paid but no salary, just the satisfaction of knowing you have helped someone sort out a problem. You can set your own hours doing only as many as you can spare. The main criteria are that you have common sense and have an ability to relate to older people.

If you think you can assist please contact the Area Coordinator Mr John Newell via the numbers / addresses above.

If you are unable to act as a visiting advocate then donations or people willing to act as fund raisers are always welcome and are needed to keep this valuable service running. ***

We are pleased to announce that the Wardens from the Canterbury and Thanet Team were presented with the Gold Award and an ‘Oscar’ type Statuette engraved with their details and date.

This award was made for the Wardens work with the youngsters from their area on the subject of ‘Under age drinking’ - an event for which you will probably remember that Minstarz were the outright winners, and they were also present at the awards ceremony.

Steve is rightfully proud of their achievements and he can be seen here joyfully displaying his personal copy of the Gold Award Certificate.

Editors comment: Well done to the youngsters and our warden, we can only expect bigger things for the future !!

ESTABLISHED

A decade after calling time for the last time, on January 24th the well known building formally known as The Prospect Inn re-opened its doors for business – this time in the form of the globally branded hotel, Express by Holiday Inn.

The hotel is a £9m development of the original site that has been undertaken by Geminex Hotels & Leisure Management. The original 1937 building designed by the

famous architect Oliver Hill, has in part retained its original purpose in becoming the hotels bar and restaurant area. The grade two listed building also now houses the

hotels reception area and one of three conference rooms appropriately named the Oliver Hill Suite.

The most noticeable change to the building is the modern extension that houses 105 guest rooms (making the hotel the largest in East Kent) and two further conference rooms. With the hotel situated at the gateway to Thanet at what is a time of investment and regeneration in the area the hotel is being driven to service the needs

of both the business and commercial traveller who are drawn to the area and have the need of comfortable, modern accommodation at a solid value price.

The three star hotel however feels far from budget though from the minute you walk in and notice the stylish architectural features in the public areas that are sympathetic to the buildings original Art Deco design through to contemporary and colourful bedrooms equipped with LCD Televisions, High Speed Broadband, Sofa’s and superb en suite bathrooms equipped with power showers.

Speaking of what the Hotel brings to the local community of Minster, the hotel’s General Manager – Dan Dennis said: “The Hotel is an exciting acquisition to the local community of Minster. Although large in size, the hotel sits on the outskirts of the village so as not to disturb its established tranquility yet close enough to provide services for local residents ranging from accommodation for friends or relatives who are visiting them through to an alternative choice

Where’s “Bob’s” real home ?????I live in Semple Close up on the Hillminster estate

and for several months we have had a stray cat hanging around.  I have asked neighbours in our Close if they know who she belongs to but have so far drawn a blank.

She is a beautiful cat really friendly good with my daughter who is 5 years old and would love to see her reunited with whoever owns her.  I have been feeding her

and she loves to have a nap on my daughters bed.  I would love to rehome her but have a dog who is not so keen !!!

Bob as she has become known is short haired black and white with green eyes and has a distinctive black spot on her nose.  I have attached a photo of her and hope that you will be able to help find her rightful owner.

COMPUTER CORNER(BY A NON TECHY)

This month, computer corner has been taken over by a girl.Yes, a girl. I’ve hunted down ‘Itsma Hobby’ with my

Spyware, blocked his firewall and he’s currently hibernating on stand-by. I’m thinking of holding him to ransom, but I expect

he’ll find some sort of recovery program by the next edition.I’ve hijacked this corner for people who’d benefit from knowing a little bit

more about how to do everyday computer tasks at home. For example:• Ideas to make your CV stand out. • How to set up a spreadsheet for your home accounts. • Printing labels and envelopes.• Inserting headers, footers or page numbers into reports.• Creating business cards, flyers or postcards.• Adding a table or a colourful chart to your documents.USING YOUR COMPUTER SAFELYAs an extensive computer user myself, I know what can happen if you don’t take care when using your computer for any length of time. If you frequently get headaches or backache, heed the following advice:• Take a few moments break away from the computer at least every hour. • Stretch, walk about, do something different. • It’s important to exercise your eyes too so periodically gaze at something in the far distance.• Don’t grip your mouse too tightly. • Keep your mouse and Keyboard at the same level - ideally about elbow level so your arms can fall relaxed at your sides.• Be aware of your posture when sitting at your keyboard computer. Adjust your screen. • Periodically look up at the ceiling to give your posture muscles a break. There’s much more advice available on the Internet, simply type ‘safe computer use’ into a search engine for more information. Will ‘Itsma Hobby’ make a full system recovery next month? Lets wait and see...Jackie RainesMobile Office Services www.jackieraines.co.uk

Editors Note: Jackie will hopefully be joining us on a regular basis and commandeering this slot every other month to give advice of a non technical nature.

We have it on good authority that Itsma Hobby hasn’t come to any real harm and WILL definitely be back next month, if we can force someone to pay the ransom !!!!!

TIGER’S TIP

The mind can only reflect the true image of the Self when it is tranquil

and wholly relaxed.

Shiny Tiles - rub with a cloth dipped in methylated spirits. Buff up with a soft dry cloth.

Jewels of Nature A Heron with wings of grey, flies above a field of gold.

Jet Elderberries sparkle with tear drops of rain, glisten in the hedgerows ages old.

Scarlet berries, Blackberries, Old Man’s Beard a-tangle, all prettily entwined, beautiful at any angle.

The grass by the river, coloured like Emeralds rare, the cheeky Robin, with Ruby breast, pops up everywhere.

The Kingfisher’s feathers irridescently shine, as the Turquoise stone, majestically divine.

22 Carat is the shade of the Dandelion’s head, which means I have seen a jewel case of gems, by the river bed.

In the lake I see, Silver scales on the fish, brushed with colour to resemble,

the sun in the sky, when a rainbow assembles. Yvonne Chapman

Ever Wondered? What wonders we can see from the earth

‘Til the day we die from the day of our birthSuch thing as small birds and pretty dainty flowers

And ugly things like those big tall towersAll colours we view some we prefer more than others

And give flowers of ‘their’ favourite to our loved ones or loversBut we never actually think what it would be

If all of these things we could not seeFor so many are out there yearning for sight

REPORT OF MINSTER PARISH COUNCIL MEETING7pm Tuesday 4th March 2008

The Chairman reported a reply from Sandy Ezekiel at TDC in relation to the concerns raised by MPC over the handling of the H2B (Monkton Road) housing development. (The letter from MPC to TDC was published in full in the February issue of Minster Matters). The Chairman stated that the reply was very unsatisfactory and failed to answer the questions raised by MPC. A letter had therefore been sent to the Chief Executive of TDC asking for the original letter to be answered in full. If the reply from the Chief Executive was not satisfactory then council agreed that they would take the matter to the Ombuds-man.

• Council voted to immediately write to TDC planning and ask for an extension to the deadline for objections to a planning application submitted by The Abbey. The planning application had only just been received and council needed more time to clarify and consider its implications before commenting.

• PC Jane reported that Police Surgeries may be reintroduced on a trial basis in the village. It has come to the attention of police that some people were not reporting minor crimes as they were not intending to claim off their insurance or they did not feel anything would be done by police. PC Jane asked that people report these matters to police so they got an accurate picture of where crime was happening and could target their resources accordingly. A meeting is to be held with the head teacher at Minster School in relation to the parking problems at the school.

• Council accepted the recommendation of the Operations Committee that the council do not set up a Community Transport Scheme with the donated minibus. Instead the money allocated for setting up the scheme be set aside as a Community Transport Fund and village organisations be invited to apply for those funds to assist with any transportation costs they incur. The amount to be allocated to the fund and the practicalities would be decided at a later meeting. The minibus donated to the council would be offered to a village group who had expressed an interest in taking on the vehicle.

• Noted the results of planning applications decided by TDC. The following were granted :- 5 Conyngham Road , 8a St Mildreds Road , 3 Prospect Road. The following were refused :- 87 Tothill Street , 11 Monkton Road. The following application was withdrawn :- Durlock Grange. The following appli-cations were received by MPC and passed to TDC with support :- 48 Monkton Road , 45 Augustine Road. A late application was received in respect of The Abbey as reported above.

MINSTER MATTERS - ONLINE UPDATESA couple of newsletters ago, we introduced you to the new Minster Matters

Web site, where you can find the newsletter, village photographs and more on-line.

Now, we’ve taken the next step and integrated a blog into the site, so that you can catch any breaking news about the village and download or listen to all of our audio editions as soon as we post them. If you register with our blog, you can also submit comments to the posts.

To check it out, point your mouse to http://www.minstermatters.org.uk/mm-blog, or click the menu bar link on the Minster Matters Web site. You can then access all posts, including podcasts of the audio edition, and add our RSS feeds to any readers you may use. (Please remember that because our audio edi-tions are around 80 minutes in length, they are large files, of approx 75mb, that will take a while to download.) If you have any questions or comments (How do I listen to the audio files? What’s an RSS feed? You guys, rock!), please email [email protected] and we’ll do our best to get you pointed in the right direction. Please drop by and let us know what you think!

From the University of Life to the Halls of Learning…This is the funny, bitter-sweet story of two mature stu-

dents studying history, and a whole lot else, at university. The play centres on Rick, in his mid-forties, who makes drastic changes in his boring life and bravely heads off to university. And that’s when the fun starts. Rick learns from his new friend Noel the important things in student life, such as how to fry an egg on an iron, but actually getting a degree doesn’t seem to be on Noel’s agenda, so how is Rick to achieve his dearly held goal? Brilliantly written, and with lots of laugh-out-loud gags, means that this comedy from the author of “Last Tango in Minster” is touching, entertaining and exhilarating."

The Fire of London (rebuilt) By Megan Eastes

On Friday 15th February Yr2 were very lucky to have firemen come in to make a rebuild of the Fire of London, using the cardboard houses the Yr2’s built. First they put sand out to place the houses on and put a safety line where the Yr2’s could stand

behind. When the children came out Miss Koberleski told them what was going to happen, they all got really excited and started shouting burn burn when the firemen lit the cardboard houses they were really loud. After the fire was building they all started to clap. The houses started to turn to ash. The Yr2’s all cheered when the houses were burnt . After the houses had burnt one of the firemen talked about fire detectors and how important they are. Then all the children said thank you and were very happy.

Mothering Sundayby Susannah Grace

Mothering Sunday is always celebrated on the fourth Sunday in Lent. This year it was on Sunday 2nd March. Mothering Sunday can also be called “Refreshment Sunday”, it was called this because the Fasting rules of Lent were relaxed. A long time ago villagers would go to worship in the nearest Church or Cathedral - it was said they had gone “A Mothering”. Young people who went to work in the big houses could go and visit their family for one day each year - this was Mothering Sunday. Sometimes they would bake a cake or take eggs or flowers for their mother. This cake is called a Simnel cake, it is a fruit cake with marzipan on top and eleven marzipan balls for the Apostles (not Judas because he betrayed Jesus). Mothering Sunday is a day to thank our Mums by doing jobs around the house so she can have a special day and a rest. Just remember to say a big thank you to whoever looks after you !!
