COLLEGE PRAYER SPECIALISM SUCCESS

All Hallows continues to gain significantly from its involvement

in the Ensemble Languages project. On Friday 5 June All

Hallows led and hosted training for primary colleagues from

across the northwest. 16 colleagues attended the training and

evaluations included comments such as “Fantastic ideas to take

back into the classroom”, “A wonderful training day and it

followed on perfectly from the first one”, “another really useful

progressive day”, “free CPD sessions of this calibre are very

rare”. On Tuesday 23 June a group of 7 colleagues attended

the Ensemble conference in Nottingham and Alice Harrison and

Janet Clarke led a workshop on assessment and progression in

languages.

PARENTS AS PARTNERS: SAFE FOOTWEAR

Parents are reminded that student footwear should be black shoes, not trainers or pumps. Female students should not wear any heels greater than one inch. The ballet style shoes and lace up canvas style pumps some of our female students are wearing are not suitable for all-day wear and are certainly not robust enough for the weather we experience. We welcome the support of our parents in ensuring our students are dressed correctly.

STUDENT CONDUCT OUTSIDE OF THE COLLEGE

Parents Please Note: Student Conduct Outside of the College Following recent incidents outside College hours and in the local community, we would like to draw all parents attention to their role in ensuring children are properly supervised and behaving appropriately at ALL times. We define good behaviour as that which flows from our Christian values of honourable purpose, respect. compassion, co-operation and stewardship. Teachers have a statutory power to discipline students for misbehaving outside the school premises. Section 89(5) of the Education and Inspections Act 2006 gives the Head/Principal a specific statutory power to regulate students’ behaviour in these circumstances "to such extent as is reasonable".

This college’s behaviour policy allows us to discipline a student for any misbehaviour when the child is: - Taking part in a school/college organised or school related activity - Travelling to or from school/college - Wearing school/college uniform - In some other way identifiable as a student at the school/college

Or misbehaviour at any time, whether or not the conditions above apply, that: - Could have repercussions for the orderly running of the school/college - Or poses a threat to another student or member of the public - Or could adversely affect the reputation of the school/college

The college reserves the right to work with the police on such matters if necessary and sanction if required. This may include the use of detention, isolation, suspension to Cornerstone, fixed term exclusion and permanent exclusion

DROP IN SESSIONS

Whilst the College requires parents to contact us on each day of absence , College policy now requires that any student who accumulates 7 or more days of absence during the course of the academic year will be asked to provide medical confirmation of the need to be absent before any further absences are authorised for medical reasons. This is a necessary measure as we closely monitor absence due to illness / medical reasons in order that we can ensure students are supported where needed. For your information medical confirmation does not have to be a doctor's note but can also take the form of a medical appointment card, a copy of a relevant dated prescription or evidence of medication being taken. If no medical evidence is provided then the absence will be coded as unauthorised. Ten or more unauthorised absences may result in you receiving a Fixed Penalty Notice. This incurs a penalty of £60 per parent / carer to be paid within 21 days, otherwise the penalty will rise to £120 per parent / carer to be paid within 28 days. If the penalty remains unpaid then the matter will proceed to the Magistrates Court where you will receive a criminal record if you are found guilty. The link between attendance and achievement is well researched and documented and students should be aiming for an attendance rate of no less than 97% over the year. Thank you for your continued support with this importance issue.

MEDICAL ABSENCE FROM COLLEGE

ATTENDANCE MATTERS

Holidays have not been authorised since 1st September 2013 under new legislation on all English schools. Requests for holidays must still be made in writing to the appropriate Key Stage leader (Mrs Garvey KS5, Mr Blades KS4/KS3), but in the vast majority of cases they will be unauthorised. A Fixed Penalty Notice may be issued of £60 per parent / carer per student, to be paid within 21 days, otherwise the penalty will rise to £120 per parent / carer to be paid within 28 days. If the penalty remains unpaid then the matter will proceed to the Magistrates Court where you will receive a criminal record if you are found guilty. Please can all holiday requests be made well in advance of the holiday being taken if not before the holiday is booked.

HOLIDAY ABSENCE FROM COLLEGE

Over the last week of College attendance was as follows:

Year 7 - 96.4% (up 0.2% from last week, well done Year 7)

Year 8 - 97.6% (down 0.2% but still the highest in College)

Year 9 - 95.8% (down 0.2%)

Year 10 - 94.2% (no change)

Attendance between Year 7 and Year 10 last week was 96.0% (no change

on the previous week and 2.3% higher than the same week last year). Our

overall attendance since 2 September remains at 95.2%.We aim for 97%.

Last week GIRLS attendance (Years 7-11) was 95.5% (down 0.6% on the

previous week), BOYS attendance (Year 7-11) was 96.5% (up 0.5%, well

done boys). The overall girls attendance since 2 September is 95.0% whilst boys is 95.5%.

CHANGES TO ATTENDANCE POLICY

From September 2015 the College will change the definition of “persistent absence” we use to include those students who are under 90% attendance. This is in line with national guidelines and increases the threshold from 85% at present.

Page 6: 26 june 2015

Most students appreciate the importance of being in College on time. Children who are regularly late do miss out on their education and form bad habits that will not be tolerated in the workplace. As a result of the change to the College day we need to inform parents that students must be in the registration form class for the register to be taken at 8.45a.m. This means students should arrive 5-10 minutes earlier in College to be on time. Any student who arrives after 8.45a.m. will receive a L code. Two L codes within a week will result in a whole college detention (which started on Thursday 6 November). This is a recent change in procedures and moves the detention away from the form tutor and it will now be seen as a whole college issue. Any student who arrives after 9.05a.m. will receive a U code. This means they will be classed as absent for the whole morning and this may have consequences for overall attendance. We are aware that College buses are sometimes late and we can confirm these students are not negatively marked in the register when this happens. Thank you for your co-operation in this matter. From 20 April - gates will be manned and students names will be taken if they are late.

Students must sign out at the Attendance Office before leaving College to attend a medical appointment. When they return to College the student must sign back in. This ensures registers will be accurate and we know the student is off site should we have a fire alarm. The Attendance Office is located in the office along the RE corridor. We thank parents for making medical appointments, where possible, that do not take up a whole day of schooling. This often allows a student to have their legal registration mark for both morning and afternoon sessions and so their overall attendance does not fall.

STUDENT SUPPORT ACROSS THE COLLEGE Friday 19 June 2015

If any parent would like their son or daughter to have a careers interview with Mrs Pilling, our Careers Advisor, this year then please notify the relevant Year Learning Leader who can ensure names are added to the list. Mrs Pilling has seen 501 students this year for impartial careers advice. Priority is now with any remaining Year 10 students as well as Year 9. Students in Year 7 and Year 8 are welcome to attend her lunch time drop in. She uses the Student Support Office based next door to Music.

TEEN BOOK CLUB— Deadline Extended

Friday 19 June 2015

CARNEGIE MEDAL WINNER IS ANNOUNCED

This year's winner is Buffalo Soldier by Tanya Landman (copies available in the library). Buffalo Soldier is an historical novel that was inspired by the story of Cathy Williams, a former slave and the only African-American woman who enlisted in the American army disguised as a man. This is how the Carnegie website describes the book: Charley, a young African-American slave from the Deep South, is freed at the end of the American Civil War. However her freedom is met with tragedy after her adopted mother is raped and lynched at the hands of a mob, and Charley finds herself alone with no protection. In a terrifyingly lawless land, where the colour of a person's skin can bring violent death, Charley disguises herself as a man and joins the army. Trapped in a world of injustice and inequality, it's only when Charley is posted to Apache territory to fight "savage Indians" that she begins to learn about who she is and what it is to be truly free. Ms Sinclair says: 'A well deserved winner! This book was packed with vivid description of a young girl striving to find her place in a world where everything she recognises has changed.'

REVIEW CREW

Students who would like to read and review any of our new books should sign up in the library with Ms Sinclair. Advice will be provided and all reviews will earn rewards.

BOOK AMNESTY

A big thank you to all those students who have returned their long overdue books. We still have many missing books, so if you do find any over the next few weeks, please send them in!

Just a reminder that Friday 2 July is the new deadline for all orders from the Teen Bookclub leaflet. There are lots of great discounted books ideal for relieving the boredom of the long summer holidays! We recommend that our students keep up their good reading habits over the break.

There will be a book stall selling English dictionaries and thesaurus, as well as French, Spanish, Latin, German and Chinese dictionaries at the Year 6 Parent's Evening. Whatever stock is left after the event, will be available for our students to buy from the library at break times during that week. More details to follow through tutors.

DICTIONARY EVENING - 6TH JULY

AUTHOR VISIT - DATE CHANGED

Please note, Bryony Pearce will now be visiting school on Thursday 9 July. If any year 8 or 9 students want to attend, they should sign up with their English teacher or see Ms Sinclair in the library.
