A local woman diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma is spreading the word about the lack of fertility treatment funding for cancer patients, and asking for a little bit of help in return. Rachel Burton, 20, was diagnosed with cancer at the end of April but says the big-gest shock to her system was learning that the cure to her illness could also make her infertile.Rachel needs to undergo six months of chemotherapy in order to rid herself of the disease, but was told shortly after her diagnosis that the treatment could leave her unable to have children, something Rachel just couldn’t comprehend. “It was so shocking to be told I had lymphoma, but even then I didn’t realise getting bet-ter could make me infertile. I didn’t know

what to think, it was crazy.”Rachel was given a good prognosis from her doctor but her dreams of one day hav-ing children were dashed when she was told that although she could have some of her eggs stored for future use, fertility treatment was no longer funded for can-cer patients. “The cost of the treatment is $10,000 and as of this year it isn’t funded. Embryo storage is funded, but I am 20 years old, I don’t have a partner that I can say to, ‘hey, wanna make some embryos?’”Rachel made the decision to take out a personal loan to pay for her own egg stor-age and ever since has been inundated with support from friends, family and locals from the community who want to help her pay it back. They have embarked on a mission to raise the $10,000 one way or another, and have organised a mass head shave at the Richmond Mall to do so.

Alongside mates who are making the trip up from Christchurch and family friends from Nelson, Rachel will have her own head shaved too in order to raise funds. She says she is using the event to “get it over with” as chemo will eventually make her hair fall out, and loves the fact that she has so much support. “It’s a real self esteem booster, it feels so cool to have everyone helping out. It’s amazing how many peo-ple are willing to help out when you need it. The event is also a good chance to just raise awareness of the fact that the fertility treatment isn’t funded. Not many people know that and it’s not exactly what you ex-pect to have to deal with when you’ve got cancer.” To donate to Rachel’s fertility fund, you can deposit into the bank account, 06-0705-0441164-00 or head along to support the head shave this Saturday.

Hair shave for good causeA search for Nelson’s largest family has attracted so much interest competition organiser Hakan Aslankilic of Cafe Olive has upped the prize pool.Having been inundated with entries, Ha-kan says he will offer a free lunch and a free breakfast to two of the other fami-lies. “It’s good to hear absolutely, that so many families have entered. We thought we’d offer the second family lunch and the third biggest family breakfast.”There are rules though, a family is de-fined as two parents and their children only and the majority of the children must be under 18.To enter the competition, email editorial @waimeaweekly.co.nz with the details of your ‘large family’. Allowing police to use iPads and iPhones will increase effi-ciency by 30 minutes each day, according to a local sergeant. As part of a new device rollout, 6500 frontline officers were given an iPhone, with a further 3900 given an iPad to use on the job. The Nelson officers included in this rollout were given theirs this week and sergeant Blair Hall, who coordinated the pro-ject, believes it will help keep police in the community by re-ducing time in the office. By using iPads and iPhones, police will be able to access more information at their fin-gertips, view jobs and events, do personal checks without having to go through a com-munication centre, take photos at the scene and in time will be able to do most paperwork on the devices. “It makes it much easier and during the trial staff said it saved them half an hour a day or half an hour a shift just by having it with them.

“We can check people on the side of the road, confirm the identity a lot easier so it’s hard-er for people to give us false details and there are a lot of other advantages,” says Blair. The time freed up by being more efficient will go into pre-vention activities, which was the whole reason behind the move. With technology evolving all of the time, Blair says the rollout should provide a strong foun-dation in the years to come. He also adds that the software in

the Apple products are specifi-cally designed for police with “several layers” of security. They have heavy duty protec-tion cases which will allow them to be used in “all ele-ments” of weather. “They’re not bulletproof or anything like that though,” he jokes. While they are restricted to frontline staff only, Blair says more local police staff will benefit from another rollout of iPads and iPhones later this year.

WINE WINS AGAIN: The results of the 2013 Spiegelau International Wine Com-petition have been announced and Bright-water Vineyards have been awarded an-other Gold Medal for their Brightwater Vineyards 2012 Nelson Riesling, the sec-ond Gold Medal that has been awarded to the wine.

YOUTH VOLUNTEER AWARDS: The win-ners of the 2013 Nelson Tasman Youth Vol-unteer Awards were celebrated last week with 100 people gathering at the Nelson City Council chambers for the event. Win-ners of the awards were announced at the ceremony with Anika Stephenson, Gina Udel and Katie Talbot winning special awards for their voluntary services in the Tasman District.

NEW CATALOGUE FOR LIBRARY: From late this month the library catalogue will have a new look and feel. Users will still be able to access the library catalogue via the library website but the new system will make it easier to find new books, CDs and DVDs and renewing and placing holds will also be a faster experience.

The Murchison brigade services a huge area including the Hope Saddle, almost to Ingangahua, and just short of Lake Rotoiti, with the nearest brigade around 30 minutes either side. Paul says in most incidents, a fire is already at its peak by the time the brigade get there and doesn’t know what would happen if the wait was increased due to lack of volunteers. “Our main aim is to save lives, property, peo-ple’s livelihood. If we don’t get the num-bers up, one of these days there won’t be anyone here to respond and I’d be abso-lutely gutted.”Paul isn’t battling with volunteer num-bers alone, with Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade’s senior station officer Craig Piner saying he doesn’t think numbers have ever been this low. “It’s getting critical for us for sure, we re-ally do need more people.”The Richmond brigade are currently op-erating on 22 volunteers, but need about 30 to feel comfortable. He says they need more numbers to have the coverage they need for the area, particularly during the day, bearing in mind that “not all 22 peo-ple are available 24/7, some work in town or do shift work”.The Richmond volunteer brigade covers the Richmond area and acts as a back up to Stoke, Wakefield and other areas

and alongside fires, attend a multitude of events from vehicle crashes, civil emer-gencies and hazardous substance call outs, but as numbers continue to dwin-dle, Craig says the reality is, they begin to rely on rural brigades. “Who are also struggling for members, and people could be stuck longer without the help that they need. “Craig is calling upon anyone in the Rich-mond area who has thought about join-ing to put their hand up. “The volunteer

brigade is for the community, it’s staffed by the community, and we need the com-munity to help us in providing people. We’ve got heaps of people that actually would like to move on, but they can’t be-cause they know the situation that would put the community in.“The lower the numbers the harder it is to get the truck out the door and that means the community is at higher risk. We won’t be able to help people as soon as we’d like to.”

Richmond church targeted

Police believe these people may be able to assist them with their inquiry into the theft of security cameras from the Holy Trinity Church in Dorset St, Richmond.

Theft of security cameras from outside the Holy Trinity Church on Dorset St in Richmond is just the latest in a series of criminal events that has left it out of pocket says vicar Sue Gill.Police are seeking two people that they think may have information in relation to the theft which Sue describes as “perplexing”.She says since Easter, there has been damage to a car in the church carpark and a break in to the office where a locked drawer was smashed open. Sue believes most of the crime is occur-ring due to public accessway that comes across the church grounds and is appealing to the pub-lic to stop the vandalism and damage. “People don’t realise that if it does continue, we may need to look at closing the grounds off at night to stop people walking through, which would be inconvenient to everyone.”

There will be no fix for the fords on Golden Hills Rd that continue to claim cars as drivers pass through up to two metres of water, with a spokesperson for the Tasman District Council saying “there will not be any changes made to signage”. Neighbouring resident Frank Goed-dert who continually rescues drivers in “desperate need” from the fords says al-though he is disappointed that the coun-cil will not be altering or adding signage to the road, people need to “wake up”

and stop being “stupid” in the first place trying to cross it while in flood. His message to drivers is to simply “take

the alternative route” instead of risking it. “People should know that there is in fact an alternative route, down Challies Rd. Most people who live on this road choose to go the long way around be-cause of the fords, so visitors to the area should too.” He also says that drivers should take note of the 30cm difference in height be-tween the first and second ford. “If you’ve passed through the first ford easily, don’t expect that you’ll be able to do the same with the second.”

More than 30 neighbouring residents to a pro-posed lifestyle village have major issue over its level of density says local man and lawyer Mark Greening. Following a community meeting where com-munications began between the developers of the village and those living in close proximity, Mark says a number of residents are now ex-pressing their concerns more vigorously. Mark and Kristin Nimmo, of the Integrity Care Group, have plans currently going through the resource consent process at Tasman District Council to build a lifestyle village on Wensley Rd made up of 112 villas, 30 terrace houses and 26 apartments and a long term residential care facility with capacity for 100 beds and 58 ser-viced apartments. The model of high density housing has been identified as a need in Richmond but Mark, whose parent’s home backs onto the develop-ment site, says residents are now operating as a group to express their worry over the height of the development, closeness to the boundary and traffic that could be generated. He says the group isn’t objecting to a retirement village, but isn’t sure that is what is being pro-posed and that has brought on concern over traffic levels on an already busy street. “This is not strictly a retirement village al-though it has been bandied around as one. They are suggesting that people will be able to live here who are over 55. That will include retired people but it’s not exclusively retired people. So if you count up all the villas and the apartment blocks, you can make your own guess on how many vehicles will be going in and out at 9am in the morning.”He says there is also a concern that the Nimmo’s could bend the rules by proposing a 12 metre high building on land that is restricted to de-velopments of 7.5 metres in height. “We would like the council to uphold the rules, rather than allow the developer to go beyond them.”Mark says if the developers made adjustments to plans in accordance with residents wishes, it

would have a cascading effect on the majority of their concerns. “I think residents would be happier if there were fewer villas on the overall development. This would provide more space on the boundaries and if the buildings weren’t so high then you’d reduce the volume of people in the complex and both noise and traffic.” He says any development in the style of Olive Estate should be subject to the high density discussion currently taking place between the public and the council. “This project should be subject to the high density discussion that the public had earlier. If this thing gets off the ground before that, it’s not fair on residents and this could set a precedent.”Sarah Etchells, who moved into the area three weeks ago says both she and her husband un-derstood that the area would be developed at some stage and were fine with it but were con-cerned about how dense Olive Estate could be. “When we heard it was going to be a retirement village we thought well that’s probably OK, but when we had a look through the plans, the high density of it seems to be remarkable. The level of density struck me.” She says she doesn’t see how it would work in terms of access of traffic and storm water run off. “We want to find out are these plans realistic? Do they have a chance of being passed through council? Are they just flying a kite perhaps and seeing what they get away with? Mark and Kristin Nimmo couldn’t be reached for comment as they are out of the country but a previous press release stated that “neighbours feedback has so far been generally positive and where further information has been requested The Integrity Care Group have been delighted to be able to provide it.”

Mid winter market fills gapwith Sinead Ogilvie

If you have an end to one of our stories contact Sinead on [email protected]

Wednesday June 19: Since appearing in an arti-cle in the Waimea Weekly, organisers of the Pay it Forward facebook page say it has taken off with donations continuing to pour in now that the group has now moved into their new prem-ises. Their new base on the corner of Muritai St and Rui St in Tahunanui is now open Tuesday and Thursday from 10am till 2pm for donations of clothing, household items and furniture. The group need a hand to keep the stock in order and are asking anyone who could offer shelv-ing to help them out. The Pay it Forward group will be at the car boot sale this Saturday at the Motueka Trading Post from 9am onwards, and are also organising a fundraising event at the Victory Community centre on July 18.

Wednesday June 12: Since local rifle expert Greg Couper featured in the Waimea Weekly, he has had some great feedback on his prod-ucts, exporting another three of his rifle muzzle brakes to Australia and fielding enquiries from locals. Greg now has a complete range of muz-zle brakes from 223 to 50 bmg, and has some new additions on the way including some tita-nium brakes. He is also gearing up to showcase at the Tahr show down in Christchurch and the Sika show in Taupo.

Tuesday May 22: The Waimea Soroptimist group has counted the takings and thanks to generous support from the community their fashion show and breakfast, put on with the support of Beetees, raised more than $2000, with 110 people coming along to the event.

Locals looking for a winter shopping fix need look no fur-ther, with a brand new mid-winter Christmas craft market to be held next weekend at the Hope Domain Hall.Organisers Rachael Fifita and Aimee Harwood decided that there was a gap to be filled in the winter market scene and have organised over 50 lo-cal stallholders to showcase their talents, with crafts rang-ing from handmade childrens clothes, wooden toys, jewel-

lery and art on offer. “The whole idea of this mar-ket is to give some part time crafter’s a way to showcase their talent and shoppers will be able to enjoy a relaxed at-mosphere while they shop” says Rachael. The midwinter Christmas craft market will be held next Sunday July 7 between 10am and 3pm, with all proceeds from the gold coin entry fee to be donated towards the Nel-son Region Hospice Trust.

Nelsonians are lapping up na-ture’s best from a bit closer to home with milk now being sold fresh at a farm gate near Saxton Field.Julian Raine’s family has spent the best part of 80 years supplying the community with milk from Oaklands dairy farm, and now he’s bringing the business back to basics offering people a “home-grown” approach to milk. After a year of planning, Julian has in-vested $1.25 million into helping locals access fresh milk, provid-ing it by the glass bottle out of two Italian vending machines. Julian says he believes all families should be able to buy their milk direct from local farmers and is pleased to be part of a grow-ing trend, with similar ventures

popping up around the region.“I think it’s great that buying fresh milk is becoming more popular. People want to know where their food is coming from these days, what’s in it, and they also want to support Nelson people. They like to know it’s fresh, and local.”The vending machines hold 300 litres of refrigerated milk each and Julian says that eventually, one will hold unpasteurised milk, providing people with a choice each time they visit. By Septem-ber he hopes to have a number of vending machines all over town, making his milk accessible to all. “I hope that buying fresh milk

becomes more of a norm. People should be able to connect with the farmer and speak to the per-son who produces the milk.”Julian also believes there are many health benefits in drinking Oakland’s milk, including the fact that it contains no permeates and it comes from cows containing the A2 gene, which is known for producing less lactose intolerance in people who drink it.Julian has plans to introduce a new milking shed onsite aimed at showcasing the farm to visi-tors who will learn about where the milk comes from firsthand. “There’s an ongoing story here, we’ll be adding products and add-ing to the brand, but at the heart of the business, there’ll be fresh milk.”

Protect us from GE:I would like to see TDC join Hast-ings District Council and put in

place protections from GE crops for our farmers to investigate changes to regulate the use of genetically engineered crops in our region. Central government won’t pro-tect our communities; it’s up to local gov-ernment now instead. Growing a GE crop needs to be a publically notified activity that needs Resource Consent so the whole community has a say in making decisions about whether GE crops have a place in our community. Without adequate regula-tion the risk for GE is placed on GE free farmers whose crops have been contami-nated from neighbouring GE farms and we will all pay for any clean-up from contami-nation. Yours faithfully, Sue Wilson.

Wannabe chefs mimic TV show:I think that’s awesome if I was cur-rently living by myself I would so

organise that with people. Aleisha Brunell.

I have always wanted to do some-thing like this. Paula Stechman.

It would be better if they did it with total strangers. It would be a good

way to make new friends. Simon Scowen.

Milk in schools creates debate:I’ve heard it tastes disgusting. Jodie Seyb.

My mum remembers the free milk from when she was a kid. Always

nice and warm it was because they didn’t have the facilities to keep that amount of milk cold. Yuck! Michelle McDonald.

I gave my nephew the free one I was given and he wouldn’t drink it,

said it tasted funny and he absolutely loves milk. Bex Wiren.

I asked a school in Richmond if they were doing the scheme and

they said no, not doing it at the moment! Whatever that meant! They were not right now or were not going to do it for some time? I’m not happy with that. I thought that the offer of free milk for the kids was a good idea but with the choice taken from them, it’s not fair. Most parents can’t afford to give the kids plenty of milk to drink at home because of the cost, so free milk at school was a good idea. Now the choice has been taken from my kid and they’re missing out. Why can’t the schools let the parents or the kids have the choice and not have it taken from them because they don’t want to be involved. Tania Clarke-Wastney.

Do kids have to drink the milk during class time? Dump the milk

somewhere safe at the school and let the kids form a line at lunch/playtime and help themselves, only one teacher/person is needed to watch to avoid riots. Teach the kids to recycle, throw the cartons in recy-cle bins... during their break... no teaching lost... lame excuse for the kids to miss out on the milk. I bet if they were handing out some-thing free for the adults it would be a different story. Rayon Mackenzie.

Each participating school is given free fridges from

Fisher and Paykel, bins located around the school and recycling ones also with liners, so if the kids fold correctly there shouldn’t be too much mess or smell. Oh and someone collects it from them also. Cold, yummy free milk for our next generation is an awesome idea, with a great recycling scheme too!! Tania Morris.

It is not a school’s job to feed children, it is not a school’s

job to teach children manners and how to behave or all the myriad of things that are being dumped on schools. Schools are there to edu-

cate children not be the dumping ground for all the social ills in our society. It is time people were held responsible for their decisions. Parents are responsible to take care of their children and if they don’t they should be prosecuted. Let schools get on with education. Claire Kelly.

Just days after a Nelson Facebook page that posted nude, rude and offensive cellphone photos of young people was shutdown, similar sites linked to schools around the region have popped up, sparking quick re-taliation from local principals.Nelson Snapchat Leaked appears to have started a trend, with pages dedicated to schools such as Waimea College, Nelson College and Nayland College now online.

The pages allow Snapchat app users to anonymously share photos on the web that were supposed to be private. The app was designed to automatically delete photos af-ter being sent, but now many people, espe-cially teenagers, are abusing the system by taking screenshots of the images and post-ing them online for all to see.Garin College principal John Boyce says his school was quick to shutdown a face-

book page featuring photos of Garin stu-dents as soon as it came to his attention last week, saying it is a form of bullying.“We had both parents and students come to us concerned about the page. As far as I am aware it was not one of our students who set it up, but a number of our students had liked the page.”Internet safety expert John Parsons says bullying is an incorrect term for the be-

haviour and people should think care-fully about giving it that name. “This is harassment, designed to deliberately hurt another person. We need to stop, in some cases, expecting schools to deal with all of this on their own. It is a community prob-lem. Bullies and abusers come from home. Schools are consistently looked at to deal with these situations on their own and I think that is extremely unfair.”

A group of dog trainers have been hitting the CBD hoping to become “Canine Good Citizens”.The four local women are currently taking part in a course run by the New Zealand Kennel Club and hope it will teach dogs to behave better around people and in different aspects of the town.Jenny Calder says the aim is to make all partici-pants good owners, good handlers and to under-stand the bylaws involving dogs. “We don’t want our dogs to freak out when there’s things moving around in the city, we want our dogs to be friendly with people, children, and people with bikes,” she says. “We want them to be good citizens in a public area. You don’t want your dog barking at people, we want them to un-derstand what is good behaviour.” Jenny says it is common for other members of the public to stop and pat the dog when she is walk-ing it down Queen St and that it is important to teach them how to approach it correctly. “If someone gets bitten the dog gets blamed so

we’re teaching people, particularly children.” She thinks dogs get a “huge amount” of bad press. “The media likes to blow it up. We don’t hear the reason behind it, just someone has been bitten by a dog. If a child gets bitten by a dog then the child has to have done something, unless it is at-tack trained. You shouldn’t leave a child with a dog anyway and these are things we are trying to teach the public.”The course is divided into four separate groups, the most basic learning simple commands and socialisation to bronze which deals with crossing the road and physical aspects of the town. Jenny says the group meet each week and is cur-rently seeking more people to join.

Carol Dayman, Jenny Calder, Debbie Richards and Raewyn Armstrong have been walking their dogs through the town as part of a local Canine Good Citizen course.

Local man Jonathan Sutton has been crowned the Nelson Young Fruit Grower of the year after beat-ing off tough competition from five other finalists from around the region on Friday. The competition, which was held at Hoddy’s Orchard, required con-testants to complete a series of tasks essential to running a fruit growing business.Growing fruit is in Jonathan’s blood, he works at his families busi-ness Daelyn Partnership, which is well known for its boysenberries and apples, which it sells both lo-cally and for the export market. As the winner of the competition Jon-athan won $1500 cash, an Energie Fruit Trophy plus an orchard study trip to Hawke’s Bay that includes airfares and accommodation. He will also receive a one-day media and presentation course in Wel-

lington and an all-expenses paid trip to the Horticulture New Zea-land Conference in July.He says the competition was a re-warding experience, but it wasn’t without challenges. “I am really pleased with my performance in the competition, but I really had to push myself as the level of grow-ers was very high, they definitely didn’t make it easy.” says Jonathan.Jonathan, 20, will go on to compete for the national Young Grower of the Year title at the conference and says he’s excited to compete at a national level. “I’m really looking forward to the national event, it will bring new challenges and get-ting to meet other growers will be a lot of fun.”Canaan Balck, 22, who is currently a Block Manager for Hoddy’s Or-chards placed third in the compe-tition.

with us

Vicky McLean and I believe that travel should be fun, exciting, interesting and educational - our store motto is that the fun should start with travel planning.

Over the coming months, together with some of our industry partners and suppliers, we’re going to be sharing with you a variety of interesting travel possibilities. Sometimes the focus will be on a particular destination, at other times, it will be on a particular holiday option.

In this first feature, we draw your attention to New Caledonia - did you realise it’s closer to Auckland than Sydney? Many Kiwis have never visited, but it’s definitely a South Pacific holiday option to consider. New Caledonia, and especially the capital Noumea, is a great mix of Polynesian and French cultures.

In this issue, we feature a truly fabulous South Pacific holiday option, WindStar Cruises - small ship cruising in another French South Pacific territory, Tahiti. While neither Vicky nor I can lay claim to having done one of these luxury small ship cruises, we can, hand-on-heart say we most definitely want to!

Dream of cruising Tahiti?A graceful sailing yacht is the perfect way to experience the true wonder of Tahiti. We’ll let the trade winds fill our sails as we visit one legendary island after another, staying overnight in most to give you time to swim and snorkel in crystal-clear lagoons, meander through lush rainforests, and experience the fascinating Polynesian culture from tikis to tiare flowers. When you’re not searching for secluded waterfalls, choosing a fragrant bloom to go behind your ear, or snorkeling vibrant reefs, you can watch the passing scenery from your favorite spot on deck. Or come up to the bridge to visit with the captain and plot our course to the next sparkling jewel on our itinerary. Live your Polynesian dream as you sail through azure waters to islands and atolls that define the word “paradise.”

7 night luxury yacht cruise from Papeete to Papeete from $4169*PPHighlights: Papeete, Moorea (overnight), Tahaa, Raiatea (overnight), Huahine (overnight), Bora Bora (overnight), Papeete

Breath-taking New CaledoniaPrepare to be moved by the breath-taking reunion of the land and the ocean when travelling to New Caledonia. This island in the South Pacific moves to the beat of its unique cultural mix. The different communities live side by side, meeting and mingling in this “little piece of France in the Pacific”.

Blessed with a semi-tropical climate all year round, this paradise is more than just beautiful beaches. 'Le Grande Terre’ or the mainland offers a diverse range of scenery and sights to experience. The diversity of landscapes is beyond imagination, the bush and its wide open spaces through to the swimming and diving in crystal clear waters are stunning.

New Caledonia really does have something for everyone. Just two and a half hours from Auckland this “Jewel in the South Pacific” is truly unique.

A warm roast meal on a wet mis-erable night appeals to many but the thought has eluded Richmond Roast House and Cafe owner Garry Higgins (aka Higgy) ever since the Richmond floods of 21 April this year. The Richmond Roast House was yet another Richmond business that was a victim of the floods, forc-ing it to shut its doors to repair the Roast House shop. Water was above ankle deep throughout the shop, leaving owner Garry and his team with a big mess to clean up. The wa-

ter destroyed everything it touched, including the walls of the building, but the most enduring problem for the Roast House was the rimu floor which was heavily damaged. “The floor soaked up so much water and it just wouldn’t dry, that was the long-est process of getting us back into business,” says Garry. But with new gib board on the walls, another fresh coat of paint after just refreshing the interior at Easter, and some hard work on the floors, the building has been restored to its former glory.

Garry took over the Roast House only two months before the floods and was having no trou-ble continuing the service of the previous own-ers. “Business was really starting to do well and we were forming a great rapport with customers both new and existing,” says Garry. While the flood put a halt to a smooth transitional period for the Roast House, its customers have showed their support and encouraged Garry and the team

to look forward with a positive out-look. Garry receives numerous en-quires every week from the public concerning the re-opening of the Roast House. “They want to know the story, and as a locally owned and community supporting business

our customers have become involved in it, but most of all they want to know when we will be back in business” says Garry.

The last couple of months have been a disruptive time and he is looking forward to supplying his regular and new customers with their favourite take home roast again. “In the end revamping the business was a good thing but it has been a process, it’s going to be great to see everyone again,” and, as Garry likes to say “there aren’t any strangers here just friends we haven’t met yet.” The response from customers during the last two months has been so enthusiastic for the Roast House and it’s from that loyal and

supportive response that Garry and the team will continue to supply a take home roast that tastes just as good, if not better than any home made one, unless it’s your Grandma’s of course. Garry has listened to his customers and has plans to expand on the menu, offering great news for local roast lovers. With a wider variety of fresh vegetables and the other additions, his customers will now be spoilt for choice. “The customers have been giving us some great feedback on our food, we have listened to it and are taking it on

board,” says Garry. A meal from the Roast House comes with the meat options of pork with crackling, beef, lamb, lamb shanks and chicken. The meat comes with a selection of vegetables including, pumpkin, kumara and of course their famous Roast House potatoes. The Roast House provides a ser-vice that is unique to the Nelson/Richmond area because it offers a classic nutritional home cooked meal but with convenience. Not

only are they delicious and handy, but the meals make a good choice for a healthier alternative to the usual takeaway. “Our customers know they are getting a freshly cooked meal, they know what they are getting, where it’s come from and know it’s good for them,” says Garry. Many customers are find-ing Roast House meals the perfect option to buy and freeze for fu-ture use. A popular choice among elderly citizens or for anyone who

loves having an easy, healthy meal on hand. The Roast House welcomes enquires regarding the free delivery service to the elderly or disabled as Garry knows we all get old one day and he wants to make sure that they get looked after,

also karma is a great thing. The Richmond floods were a setback for the Richmond Roast House and Cafe but Garry and his team have been inspired by the sup-port of their customers and are excited about re-opening. The Roast House doors will open on the 28 June at 4pm so head down and see Garry and his friendly staff at 309 Queen Street Richmond to try healthy and afford-able home made meals, with the convenience of a takeaway. Garry would also like to thank personally Cenro Insurance, Mathew Boon Plastering, Allen Plumbing, Active Electrical, Rich-mond Resene Colour Shop, Carpet Court, ANZ Bank, Elite Flooring and also Wayne and Nick Pichard his landlord for their help thoughtout this process. Thank you very much, says Higgy!

After a lick of paint and some repairs due to flood damage, the Roast House will be re-opening this Friday.

LAST DAYS

Three of Nelson’s top female body builders have recently returned from the Australasia Natural Body Building Championships held on Australia’s Gold Coast. Paula Fearnley, Kat Bunting and Anne Jameson all competed under the team name Le Muscle Belles and achieved some excellent results. Anne was awarded third place in the Grand Masters Fig-ure, while Paula placed second in the Masters Figure with Kat taking out first place in the same grade. The three ladies are all national champions but only Anne has ever competed at international level before. “It was a massive show and the best one I have ever been in, it was an amazing experience and we are very pleased with our results,” says Paula. The outcome is a great reward for the rigor-ous and dedicated training routine the team followed, involving gym sessions and a strict nutritional plan. Le Muscle Belles trained six days a week for two to three hours a day, con-sisting of mostly cardio and weight training in preparation for the championships. Their diet consisted of high protein foods such as chicken and fish with plenty of fresh vegeta-bles. “A lot of people think body builders don’t eat much, but we probably eat more than the

average person, it’s just really clean food and high in protein,” explains Paula. The team has no time to relax now that the championships are over. Their intense training continues as they prepare for a Nelson show in August and the National champs which are to be held in Auckland in October where the ladies hope to continue their excellent form.To reach the Gold Coast, Le Muscle Belles received some outstanding support from the community who took part in raffles and quiz nights and offered sponsorship to make their trip possible. Le Muscle Belles would like to say a huge thank you to all their sponsors and everyone who helped them get to Australia.

F CUS ON WAKEFIELDDespite a wet weekend, the Wakefield Boar hunt attracted its best ever crowd over the weekend with a record 151 entries into the competition. The comp kicked off on Friday and organiser Su-san Ferguson says she was extremely impressed with how many people turned out for the event.“This was our best yet after three years in a row, what a great turnout.” She says there were “more pigs than ever” and some “fantastic prizes up for grabs. The high number of entries was made up of nine ladies, 42 children and 109 men and Susan says the fact that the whole family can and does

enter is what make sit so popular.“It’s great that the kids can go out and get something and come back and weigh it in. It’s a good family day.”The weigh in was held at the Wake-field Hotel with hundreds of keen hunters and supporters showing up to support the vent which ended on a high note with music, dancing, food and laughter. Susan says it was

also one of the best prizegiving and after hunt events the competition has had and she couldn’t wait for next year’s do.Cameron Strange, who weighed in a huge 122kg stag that took out the prize for its section says he thought he was onto a good one and had a hunch he was going to take out the prize. “I would’ve been annoyed if I didn’t, it’s pretty big.” He says he

has been hunting for 18 years and thought the Wakefield competition was “one of the best. I’ve been hunting a long time and it’s great that this comp is here for hunters, it’s run by good local people and people really support it.” It wasn’t just the adult hunters who had a good time, with kids weighing in everything from hares, rabbits, possums, to goats and pigs them-selves. Caleb Young, 13, of Wakefield weighed in the biggest goat, at 27kg and says he enjoyed the competition weighing in more than one entry be-cause it was “fun” and he “likes to go hunting.”

By Nick IppolitoDo you have a deep longing; to be-long somewhere, to have a group of people you can be honest with who you know and trust will never turn their backs on you, to have people who you can call family? Where do you find true community? I heard a story of a guy who used to be in a gang, and left everything to fol-low Jesus. He left the gang and got baptised and became part of a church community. After a while he stopped going to the church gather-ings and when some of his friends asked him why he stopped going and he said, “when I got baptised, I thought that it was going to be like when I got jumped into my gang. When I got jumped into my gang suddenly everyone had my back, we became like a family 24/7. When I got baptised I thought this is what’s going to happen with the Christians. I didn’t know that it was just Sunday mornings and Wednesday Nights. I thought it was going to be fam-ily. I just had it wrong in my head.” When the pastor of this church, Francis Chan heard this he thought, “Oh no, wait a second! You’ve got it right, we’ve got it wrong.” Now hear me first, I’m a Christian and I love the church. But as a pas-tor myself I ask the questions, “why is it that so many people do not find true community within the church?” Is Chan right? Does the church have it wrong?

Today the church experiences pres-sure from the outside to perform and create excellent experiences for those who come to Sunday gather-ings. Some people come into church with expectations on what they want to get out of it. If they do not like it they will leave and find a differ-ent one that will suit their taste or their beliefs. Much like finding the right cafe that provides their favour-ite coffee. True community is not meant to be a building we gather in and goes much deeper than just get-ting what I want. Does that sound like a family or does that sound like consumer-ism? To me, when I think of family I think of brothers and sisters get-ting together because of their love for one another, even with the crazy cousin you’re embarrassed by. Not to get things from each other but to give and help each other. When a church is working well I believe that the truest sense of community is dis-played. God sent his son Jesus into the world to die for our selfishness (Galatians 4:3-6). Jesus describes the church as the family of God and anyone who follows him has been adopted as a son or daughter into God’s family. Jesus gives us true community and the great privilege of crying out to God as Father and everyone has been given an invitation to join the family. What will you do with your invite?

Only the unthinkable can prevent the Stables Richmond Rabbits from securing the TRL minor premiership for the second year in a row. With all matches on the weekend cancelled due to field closures, the Stoke Cobras’ very faint hopes of going into the playoff series in pole position seem all but over. Mathematically, the Cobras can still reach first place with one round to spare, but it seems almost impossible needing to win, make up a 163 point deficit and hope that the Rabbits lose to the Wairau Taniwha for the first time this season. While topping the table at the end of the regular season does not secure the TRL title, Rabbits as-sistant coach Deon Charles believed it was still a significant milestone for the club. “Yeah I think it’s important for us to celebrate milestones like that along the way,” says Deon. “When you sit down at the start of the season you have your goals and

definitely to take out the minor premiership is one of those. It’s a long season so to come out on top is a real achievement.”The Rabbits lost its last outing, a game against ri-vals Stoke Cobras, and a loss this weekend could be disastrous heading into the playoffs the week-end after. Having just beaten the Taniwha in the dying stages last time the Rabbits made the trip to Blenheim, Deon was well aware of the threat the side posed. “At a quick glance they’re the team we’re probably going to play in the playoffs. They’re a very big, physical side and this will be the toughest assignment we’ve had all week. We certainly don’t want to lose and then play them with their tails up a week later. We need to end the season coming up not going down.”Overall Deon was happy how things were track-ing along as it looks to bank its second title in consecutive years.

A new $950,000 hockey turf will be rolled out at Saxton Field this week having been delayed as a re-sult of wet weather. The new water-based turf, which will replace the old sand turf, is jointly funded by Nelson City Council, Tasman District Council and Hockey Nelson. It is being installed by Downer and is now likely to be ready next month, well into the current hock-ey season.Hockey Nelson president Diane Proudfoot says the initial comple-tion date did factor in delays due to the weather and the official open-ing date could be July 6.

“We’re looking at the first weekend of July hopefully.”She says it has been “pretty dif-ficult” to juggle playing all grades and matches on just one turf in the meantime, with some teams hav-ing to play games until 9:30pm on Thursday and Friday nights.“Which is pretty late. We’ve had to keep things pretty tight and we’ve managed to accommodate it and our players are supportive because they can see something happening. We know it’s not like this forever.”The late night games will stop once the second turf is installed. The turf is being supplied by Auckland-based company Tiger Turf.

The rain was definitely the dominant factor in Nelson Netball on Saturday, so much so only Grades 1 to 4 were played at Saxton Courts.Conditions were far from perfect for the 10am round when Rival Cougars met Waimea College B. To their credit both teams played good, steady, wet weather netball – short chest passes were the order of the day which eliminated dropped ball and footwork calls. The teams could not be separated at the first break (9 all) or the second (16 all). Rival’s shooters Kelly Jenkins and Renee Bouzaid had the perfect record for the first half when they did not miss a shot.It was the first outing at goal shoot for Emma Deighton as she is more accus-tomed to a defensive role in the circle. While Emma was a little tentative to begin with, she settled in nicely and is another option in the offensive circle for coach, Lyn Olsen. The mid court of Ruby Jensen, Holly

Young and Jessie Matthews kept their composure against their more experi-enced opposition. They worked hard to create the turnover ball and linked well to deliver quality ball to their shooters.Waimea had their noses in front by a solitary goal going into the final quarter, however Rival lifted the bar to outscore them 10-5 to take the game 33-29.Defenders Anika Paton, Ella Hanna, Hannah Taylor and Emma Deighton all toiled solidly to shut down Rival’s accu-rate shooting duo.Kelsi Hylkema was industrious at goal attack – she was effective off the line and at second phase and was the dominant shooter.Coach, Lyn Olsen was pleasantly sur-

prised with her players – they adapted well to the conditions, stayed in touch until the final few minutes against much wiser heads and it was pleasing to see the combinations developing well, going into the second round.GRADE 2:A blanket could be thrown over the six teams competing in Grade 2 when each of the three games had only a four goal margin.Richmond Red could have expected a win, having been relegated from Grade 1, however Jacks Red put up a great fight before going down 27-31.Nayland College repeated their perfor-mance from the previous week when they accounted for Garin College Hang-ar 58, 25-21.Promoted Stoke Accessman played a structured game to take a 30-26 win over Suburban Blue.So if round one is anything to go by, there are some great encounters to look forward to.

Waimea Old Boys

Quiz Night 6 July

Waimea Old boys JAB teams are being re-warded by the generosity of a local business owner, who is donating the next genera-tion of local sports stars a pizza when they win player of the day. The owner of both the Nelson and Richmond Domino’s Pizza stores, Billy Gao, has donated 270 pizzas to the rugby club each season for the last three years and says supporting local young peo-ple is important. “It’s great seeing the play-ers of the day when they come in after their game and being able to congratulate them for playing well for their team. It gives me such a good feeling and I’m happy to do it.”Each player of the day for the club’s 18 JAB teams will be given a voucher for a pizza along with a certificate and a trophy after their game on a Saturday. JAB coordinator Jeremy Salton says the club was “extremely appreciative” of Billy’s generosity. “It’s really great to have Billy on board again this year, it is good to see the community backing the club and in turn the club backs the community.”

JAB players get rewards

Saturday morning dawned with fairly bleak condi-tions ahead of the days rugby. With the A’s and B’s both scheduled to play in Bright-water, our Waimea ladies were the only senior team to play at home this week. Riwaka turned up with 10 players all keen for a run so it was decided Waimea would give three players and the game would be played 12 aside. Conditions underfoot were atrocious and with snow on the hills the air was freezing as the game was start-ed. Waimea blew Riwaka out of the first half, getting most of their points on the board during this time. A quick shuffle up in both teams at half time saw a more evenly matched second half. As usual the Waimea ladies playing for the opposi-tion showing no mercy on their WOBBA team mates and working well with the Riwaka ladies they kept the pressure on them throughout. Despite greasy conditions, the ball was kept in hand well by both teams and a great game was had by all. Players of the day, Anna Bradley and Stephanie Omundsen. Final score 83-22.This weekend Waimea are set to play against Stoke in what’s shaping up to be a tough game for both teams as they head towards the end of the season and finals. Come and show your support for the ladies this Sat-urday afternoon at Jubilee Park.

Women keep the winning drive alive

Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys halfback Kaide Whiting passes the ball as his side went down to fierce rivals Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers in the semi final of the Tasman Trophy in Brightwater on Saturday. The final score, 9-6, indi-cated how tight the match was and how the muddy conditions held both sides try-less over the 80 minutes. The loss means Waimea are out of the Tasman Trophy competition but they still have plenty to play for in the Nelson Bays club competition. Wanderers, meanwhile, will face defending champions Nelson at Trafalgar Park this Saturday in the final. Kickoff is at 3pm. Photo: Blair Hall/www.imagepress.co.nz.

That’s what we need. Someone who can be part of our sales team, who’s really just two things, very honest and solid as a rock. Dependable. If you have these two attributes we can do the rest. Maybe its time for a change or maybe you are just back into the workforce? We offer a pretty exciting full time role as an account man-ager with our market leading, locally owned, newspapers. We will give you all the training and support, you just bring the enthusiasm and lets see what we can achieve. It’s a great job really, no weekend work, pretty good wages, well established newspapers, great team in a politically incorrect environment where we still enjoy a joke, even a really sick one, but we take our role seriously in the market and we are very professional. Immediate start and the role is salaried with incentives. So if you would like to be part of our team send us your resume and don’t muck around, get it in now. Email: [email protected]

Summary of statement of proposal to review the introductory bylaw – chapter 1 – 2006The Tasman District Council resolved to review the Introductory Bylaw – Chapter 1, 2006 pursuant to Section 158 of the Local Government Act 2002.

In accordance with the Special Consultative Procedure provisions of Section 83 of the Act, the following Summary of Information is provided:

Summary of Information

The Tasman District Council Consolidated Bylaw – Chapter 1 – Introductory section came into force in 2006. The Local Government Act 2002 requires all bylaws to be reviewed within five years of coming into force. Once this Bylaw has been reviewed, it will need a further review in ten years time.

The purpose of the Introductory Bylaw with regard to all Bylaws contained within the Tasman District Council Consolidated Bylaw is to:

• Provideconsistencyininterpretationoftermsused;

• Dealwithmattersgeneraltoallbylaws,i.e.licences,servingofnotices,removalofworksinbreachofbylaws,compliancewaivers,discretionarypowersandgeneraloffences;

• Includesomedefinitionsincommonwithotherbylaws.

The main changes from the 2006 Bylaw are:

The inclusion of an “Interpretation” section, as listed below, which defines commonly used terms in the Consolidated Bylaw:

Council means the Tasman District Council.

District means the district of Tasman District Council.

Owner of any real property includes a registered proprietor, a trustee, and any person for the time being entitled to receive the rent of the property, land, building, or premises or who would be entitled to receive to the rent if the property were let to a tenant. Where any such person is absent from New Zealand, ‘owner’ includes his or her attorney or agent.

Owner of any personal property includes the person having charge or the management of the property.

Person or any other words applying to any person or individual, shall include a firm and also a corporation.

Rates Records mean the rates records of the Council kept pursuant to the Local Government (Rating) Act 2002.

Road shall have the same meaning as in section 315 of the Local Government Act 1974 and shall where the context requires include a street (excluding State Highways) and any place the public has access to, whether as of right or not.

The removal of the “New Technology” section, viz:

If, after the coming into force of any of these Bylaws, any person who wishes to install or use in the district any article or thing which had not been introduced into the district prior to the coming into force of these Bylaws and which, while not complying entirely with the provisions of these Bylaws, may in the opinion of the Council be properly installed and put into use, and which does not contravene the intention and spirit of these Bylaws, the Council may either generally or specifically authorise the installation and use of such article or thing, and may impose such conditions as it deems necessary.

The section is now deemed to be irrelevant.

The full Statement of Proposal is available for viewing during normal Council hours at the following Council offices:

Main Office, 189 Queen Street, Richmond Motueka Service Centre, 7 Hickmott Place, Motueka Golden Bay Service Centre, 78 Commercial Street, Takaka Murchison Service Centre, 92 Fairfax Street, Takaka

And libraries:
