Now in its landmark 25th year, the IBA’s globalisation of investment funds conference (originally held in
Bermuda and more recently in Boston) will this year be held in Paris in June 2014. The key focus remains on providing high quality panels on legal and regulatory topics of interest – with two intensive working days. We have a varied programme and I am delighted that we have some excellent keynote speakers participating.
The second, and possibly secondary but yet important, aim of the conference is to provide a forum for those involved in the investment fund industry to meet. There will be a social event on the Sunday afternoon before the conference, a welcome drinks on the Sunday evening and a formal conference dinner on the Monday evening. So there should therefore be plenty of time to exchange news and views.
Typically the conference attracts over 200 delegates from 25+ jurisdictions. Whilst the conference has a loyal following of practitioners and in-house counsel, it is well supported by regulators, and it is attracting an increasing number of accountants, service providers and others connected with or with an interest in investment funds regulation worldwide, we are always seeking to attract additional delegates.
Hopefully the move of the conference to Paris will enable more of you to consider attending this year and please take advantage of the early bird registration rates as soon as possible. The Organising Committee look forward to seeing you in Paris in June.
Kind regards,
Kirstene Baillie

(a) Stroll in the heart of the Ile de la CiteA beautiful stroll through the origins of Paris. Known as the ‘cradle of Paris’, already in the centre of Lutecia in ancient times, the Ile de la Cite has existed for more than 20 centuries and houses the Gothic jewel of the French capital: the 12th century cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris. This small piece of land of 26 hectares has 9 bridges crossing the Seine in every direction, and at least four gardens. The island, as we know it today, has only existed since the 1600s.
Price: €15
(b) Stroll in the heart of the MaraisThis neighbourhood will impress you with its architecture, as it is dotted with numerous private mansions (hotels particuliers) dating from when Henri IV made this an aristocratic neighbourhood. However, at the time of the Revolution, workmen and craftsmen, especially watchmakers, took over the place. The Marais owes its name to the old dry swamps on which it was built (‘marais’ means swamp in French) and is one of the few neighbourhoods in Paris, to not bear the famous Haussmann mark. These days, it is a trendy neighbourhood in which several communities live harmoniously.

Please note there are limited places on both tours.

International Bar Associationthe global voice of the legal profession
The International Bar Association (IBA), established in 1947, is the world’s leading organisation of international legal practitioners, bar associations and law societies. The IBA influences the development of international law reform and shapes the future of the legal profession throughout the world. It has a membership of over 40,000 individual lawyers and almost 200 bar associations and law societies spanning all continents. It has considerable expertise in providing assistance to the global legal community as well as being a source of distinguished legal commentators for international news outlets.
Grouped into two divisions – the Legal Practice Division and the Public and Professional Interest Division – the IBA covers all practice areas and professional interests, providing members with access to leading experts and up-to-date information. Through the various committees of the divisions, the IBA enables an interchange of information and views among its members as to laws, practices and professional responsibilities relating to the practice of business law around the globe. Additionally, the IBA’s high-quality publications and world-class conferences provide unrivalled professional development and network-building opportunities for international legal practitioners and professional associates.
Investment Funds Committee overviewThe Investment Funds Committee provides a convenient forum for its members to consider current developments in the global investment funds industry, including both regulatory and product development. It also produces semi-annual newsletters and occasional e-bulletins for its members.
In addition to its programmes at the annual IBA conferences, the committee presents an annual conference on Globalisation of Investment Funds normally held in June, which celebrated its 24th successful year in 2013. The event attracts delegates from approximately 30 countries and features presentations by senior regulators from around the world and senior executives of top fund managers.
The committee also has established Private Investment Funds Subcommittee. The subcommittee focuses on specialised collective investment vehicles such as venture capital, real estate, hedge, leverage buy-out and commodity funds. In addition to its programme at the annual IBA conferences, the subcommittee annually presents the Private Investment Funds Conference normally held in London each March. This conference is co-sponsored by the Private Funds Committee of the American Bar Association and held its 14th successful event in 2013.
Additionally, the Investment Funds Committee works with the following committees to form the Financial Services Section: Banking Law, Capital Markets Forum, Insurance and Securities Law.
