David
Bayer
After retiring with 32 years serving the Ventura
City Fire Department, David Bayer felt the best
way he could give back to the community was to
volunteer. David has contributed many volunteer
hours in the community, supporting FOOD Share,
Community Memorial Hospital, Museum of
Ventura County, Ventura County Community
Foundation, American Red Cross Ventura County,
Ventura County Library and KCLU. Additionally,
David was inspired to create 911MAPP, an idea
with a simple goal: to enable individuals to
organize their medical history. Founded after his
retirement in 2005, 911MAPP is critical to the
successful treatment of patients in emergency
situations, allowing emergency medical
personnel to quickly assess, treat, stabilize, and
transport patients. Davids ultimate goal is to do
more than take up space. By volunteering David
has the opportunity to motivate others to do the
same.

What book is sitting on your nightstand? Politics of the
Middle East: Cultures and Conflicts (Roskin & Goyle),
No Less than Victory (Shaara), TheWarriors Path
(LAmour), The History of Beer Pong (Singer), and The
Prince (Machiavelli). What group did you hang out with
in high school? Intellectual jocks. What was your favorite
thing to do on the school playground? Dodgeball. What
does Ventura County need? The best thing that could
happen to Ventura County would be for the east and
west halves of the county to come together. They really
do operate independently, to the detriment of both. The
Camarillo grade seems to be not only a physical barrier,
but an emotional one, as well. Bridging that feeling
would be a benefit to all members of our community.
However, if that doesnt happen, how about a minor
league baseball team? Which word or phrase do you most
overuse? I have a meeting at __ oclock. What is your
greatest fear? While I am not a huge fan of the dentist
or colonoscopies, and I certainly have a healthy fear of
dying in a fiery crash (automobile or plane), in the end,
my greatest fear is disappointing my family. If I can avoid
that, nothing else really matters or scares me. If you could
change one thing about yourself, what would it be? To
never waste another minute complaining, whining or
gossiping. It strikes me as odd, and as a weakness, that
knowing these things are a complete waste of time, and
even counter-productive, I still slip into them on oc-
casion. What is your greatest regret? That I didnt join
the military after graduating high school. It was 1975,
post-Vietnam, and the military was purposefully shrink-
ing. I still should have served. To this day, I cannot meet
a veteran or active-duty soldier without being terribly
grateful and a little bit embarrassed. Who is your real-life
hero? My real-life hero is my real-life wife, Randi. What
is your motto? There is only one success to be able to
spend your life in your own way.

My father has always been a mentor and inspiration to me. Seeing how he views businessas a tool to better his family
and his community, and how this vision has shaped his friendships and business for the last 30 yearshas taught me
invaluable lessons. I couldnt be more proud of his selection, and I know what it means to him to be recognized by a
community that he cares so deeply about.

Many people dont realize the difference they can
make even on a small level. Driven by this simple
concept, Kathy Hartley encourages people to do
whatever they can to help, and shes the perfect role

balance. What is your most treasured possession? My
family photos, my wedding ring, and my dads watch,
both of which I wear daily. Who is your real-life
hero? My hero has always been my dad, Robert, who
recently passed away. He was one of the kindest people I
have ever known. He taught me everything from math
to keeping the inner child alive. He had a corny sense of
humor and always made holidays special. My hero since
I was young was Rosa Parks. She stood up for what she
believed in, against all odds. Being a black person in
the South and a woman, she was a catalyst who altered
history and that is powerful!

A pollingc om p a n yr e c e n t l yasked 2,252Amer icanadults: Ifyou couldlive forev-er in goodhealth at aparticularage, what age would you like to be?The average age selected was 50,
which some would say is the new 30.This is a trendy phrase to which oth-ers of a more skeptical nature might re-spond, Yeah, right.
I turned 50 this year, and Im on thefence about it being the best age atwhichto live forever. The downside is that Idont always like what I see in the mir-ror, and sometimes muscles hurt for noreason. Other than that, I guess being50 is OK.But Im one of those for whom health
problems havent yet become a huge is-sue.Which iswhy Iwasnt going to havea colonoscopy. My doctor, whos generally conserva-
tive about running tests, insisted on it.I thought about the risks, the people Iknew whod never done it and the hid-eous stories about the preparation.
Luckily forme,myHMOdoesnt rushinto anything, so it was twomonths be-tween my doctor ordering the colonos-copy and the gastroenterology depart-ment actually giving me a call to setup an appointment. After I reluctantlyaccepted their proposed date, I had an-other month in which to psych myselfup for it.The only thing I can compare it to is
jury duty. You have to go even thoughyou know its going to be awful, but atleast itll be over quickly. Unless some-thing goes wrong and you have to comeback for further prodding.
My biggest concern about having thecolonoscopy was the possibility of ac-cidental perforation of the colon, whichoccurs during a very small percentageof procedures. The problem with smallpercentages is that if it happens to you,
then it becomes 100 percent.I wasnt too worried about the prepa-
ration, which nearly everyonewhos hada colonoscopy likes to share stories of,replete with plenty of ick factor. Really, though, drinking that magical liquid isnot that bad.Nor is what it does to you, if you look
at it as just a few hours out of your life, where you can spend the time produc-tively by analyzingwhich bathroom tilesneed replacement and how much groutit will require.
I went to the hospital the next morn-ing, and was treated very well by medi-cal staff, who kindly knockedme out fora great little sleepwhile the colonoscopywas painlessly performed.Whichwouldbe the end so to speak of the storyhad the doctor not told me that hed re-moved a precancerous polyp. My husband and I named it Patsy. As
a precaution, Patsy the polyp went tothe lab to be biopsied. I received a callfrom a technician about a week later, conrming what the doctor said: Patsywas, indeed, precancerous, and that Ishould return for another colonoscopyin three years. This is from the website of the
Mayo Clinic (www.mayoclinic.com/hea l t h /colon- cancer/DS00035/DSECTION=causes):Colon cancer most often begins as
clumps of precancerous cells (polyps)on the inside lining of the colon. Polypscan appear mushroom-shaped, or theycan be at or recessed into the wall ofthe colon. Removing polyps before theybecome cancerous can prevent coloncancer. So now I know that being that won-
derful forever age of 50may have hiddendrawbacks, nomatter howgoodyou feel. Its a little scary to think that if I had
chosennot to have the procedure fearingperforation or citing those friends whonever had a colonoscopy and were neor knowing that the prep part is yucky, thenPatsymayhave evolved into cancer. No ifs, ands or you know about it.
