FROM THE RECTOR 25 May 2014 Dear Friends, Jesus speaks in this Sunday’s gospel of his imminent departure and, at the same time, tells of the new way in which we will see him—the way of faith which leads to eternal life. ‘You will see me, because I

live and you will live’ (Jn 14:19). Sometimes it seems that memory is where we keep things out of sight and out of our conscious day-to-day mind. But to remember Jesus is quite a different matter. It is to call upon his Spirit without whom we can neither love nor serve him. With every blessing, Fr Steven Salmon, Rector

PARISH NEWS Music notes for today’s Family Eucharist: This morning's anthem is by the Elizabethan composer, Richard Farrant (c.1525-1580) who was a Gentlemen of the Chapel Royal to Queen Mary and her sister Queen Elizabeth. Farrant was a prolific composer who wrote regularly for the entertainment given in the Blackfriars Theatre in London, and was one of the first composers to write verse-anthems. Today he is better known for his simple homophonic anthems, Lord, for thy tender mercies sake, Call to remembrance and Hide not thou thy face. The voluntary this morning is Colin Brumby's Toccata Festiva, which was written to commemorate the restoration of the organ in St Andrew's Cathedral in Sydney.

Pins’n’Needles: will hold a stall today displaying work and selling handmade goods after both the 8:00am and 10:00am Services in support of the organ fund. All are welcome to come to the group’s regular meetings at 9:30am on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month.

Come and enjoy afternoon tea and a good sing-song at “Songs of Praise”. There are a few spaces remaining for “buying” favourite hymn and organ music items; see Lynette to book them. $10 entry donation invited towards the Organ fund.

Please put your name on the list in the foyer for catering proposes.

Caritas: At its next meeting on Monday 2 June, 7:30pm the Caritas Group is screening the DVD of the movie ‘Amazing Grace’, about William Wilberforce, who led the campaign to abolish slavery in Britain. When the slave trade was not only perceived as acceptable but as necessary for the economy, with fellow abolitionists he dared to speak out, for the freedom of others. All welcome! For information please speak with Barbara Emmett (9971 8428). Thanks: The Miller and Hastings families have sent warm thanks to friends at St John’s for sharing the special time of Lachlan’s Baptism last Sunday.

Happy Birthday belatedly to Alma Ondevilla (18th), Mia de Angelo (20th), Don Fisher (23rd), and this week to Tom Ridgway, Brian Pratt (25th) and Isabel Ridgway (31st)

Hear the Aeon Chamber Ensemble in recital at St John’s - Sunday 8 June at 2:00 pm

Continuing St John’s Classical/ Variety Music Series; the AEON Ensemble, drawn from past and present members of the Sydney Symphony and Australian Opera and Ballet orchestras and the Australian Chamber Orchestra, will be performing a sublime program of 19th century chamber music by Faure and Schumann.

To be followed by refreshments donations invited to support the Organ Fund

Parish Administration, Welcoming and Reception: Parishioners were advised at the Annual General Meeting that our Administration Coordinator, Graeme Couch is looking to take a step back from the regular operation of these ministries. It is hoped that a suitably skilled, paid person(s) can be recruited to take on this role. The position will report to the Rector, with key functions being to work closely with our volunteers, coordinating admin operations, managing all related IT and communications aspects, contributing to the smooth working of the Parish, welcoming visitors, and dealing with enquiries. The person appointed would need to work in the parish office for 2-3 hours on most mornings (12 hours per week) in conjunction with our volunteers (ideal for someone newly retired or with school age children) and be accessible by phone and online. Before we search outside the Parish, if you know anyone who may be interested in this challenging yet fulfilling role, please see the Wardens. We will be looking for flexibility, “power” PC application skills, excellence in relating with others and ability to master the detailed operations of the parish.

St John’s Film Group: While disappointing to members, it has been decided to suspend the group’s screenings for the time being; this is subject to review early in 2015. The decision has been taken in light of the crowd of other events planned for the remainder of this year and the workload that will involve for many parishioners. Our thanks to Valda Ashover for leading the group over recent years, and her selection of thought-provoking and entertaining movies. If you are an aspring film buff and prepared to take on the Film Group coordination role, please speak with Valda (9971 7997) or Graeme Couch in the first instance.

FAMSING, a choral offshoot of FAMS Theatre Co is presenting a concert of opera and theatre music today at 2:00pm at St John’s. Also featuring pianist Tim Swales playing Schumann, and some teasing tidbits from FAMS’ production of ‘The Yeomen of the Guard’. Donations invited to support FAMS. Please see details on the lobby noticeboard.
