Some people believe that exams are an inappropriate way of measuring students’ performance and should be replaced by continuous assessment. Do you agree or disagree with this view? Over the last few decades there has been a hot debate among professors whether students’ performance should be measured by continuous assessments or by exams. Some educators argue that exams cannot and should not be replaced with any other form of evaluation. Others, however, strongly disagree with that opinion and offer counter-arguments. In this essay I will depicts positive and negative sides of both views and propose possible solution. Evaluation of students by exams has some good arguments. For example, taking exam under pressure is very hard, but needed, according to proponents. They believe that it is a valuable life skill; therefore everyone should be prepared to cope with various difficult situations that future can put in front of us. Educators, who advocate exams as a good evaluation tool, point out that students also need to be prepared to do the task in time constraint conditions. According to them, finishing a task in time limited conditions is as important as mastering a study material. This also represents a valuable skill, because nowadays productivity is very important in business world. On the other hand, opponents of the evaluations by exams method say that there are at least two reasons why students should be assessed continuously. First, exams are methodology biased because they tend to favorite only students who are good with written forms. Second, some fields of studies, such as art and design, cannot be properly assessed via exams, but by continuous assessment due to the fact that evaluation needs to be done by taking into account whole creative process. In conclusion, in my view both approaches are valuable to certain extent. Exams cannot be substituted with continuous assessment and vice versa, and use of both methods simultaneously would be the best technique of evaluation.
