AROUND THE “ALMOST” ROUNDTABLE

Your history of disciple making

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO MAKE DISCIPLES?

“Discipleship is not a ministry of the Church; it is the ministry of the Church.” !

-Aubrey Malphurs

Organizational To change the church

and to multiply disciple making you must plan

and organize the church to make disciples.

TWO FOCUSES ON DISCIPLE MAKING

Organic It must be life on life.

DISCIPLE MAKING “Discipling is an intentional relationship in which we walk alongside other disciples in order to encourage, equip and

challenge one another in love to grow toward maturity in Christ. This includes equipping the disciple to teach others as well.”

--Discipleship Essentials (p. 17) !

!

A Disciple is a person who: Putman and Harrington - Discipleshift !

1. Is following Christ (Head) “Follow me” 2. Is being changed by Christ (Heart) “I will make you” 3. Is committed to the mission of Christ (Hands) “Fishers of men”

DISCIPLE MAKING DIALOGUEWhat is your BURNING hope?

Program vs. ProcessDISCIPLE MAKING

“THE MOST DAMAGING RESULT [OF PROGRAM-BASED DISCIPLESHIP] IS THAT CHURCHES CATEGORIZE DISCIPLESHIP AS JUST ONE OF THE MINISTRIES OF THE CHURCH, RATHER THAN THE CORE OF ITS MINISTRY”

BILL HULL - COMPLETE BOOK OF DISCIPLESHIP(36).

TAKE 7 MINUTES

V

1.  Discipleship  in  the  church  will  not  work  holis3cally  or  long-‐term  without  the  intricate  involvement  of  the  Senior  Pastor.

2.  Pastoral  Discipleship  has  a  Training  in  Righteousness  and  a  Training  in  Leadership  component.

3.  Killing  programs  may  not  be  the  best  way  to  change  the  system/process  in  your  context.

4.  Church  membership  maIers  and  raising  the  bar  is  a  key  component  of  a  robust  discipleship  process.

5.  Alignment  and  redeeming  exis3ng  programs  may  allow  your  people  to  move  to  a  discipleship  centric  model.

6.  One  of  the  primary  keys  to  implementa3on  comes  down  to  developing  and  cul3va3ng  groups  (life  groups,  Growth  groups,  one  on  one  groups…whatever  model  you  use).

7.  The  metrics  must  change:  we  need  to  break  down  the  numbers  further  in  our  evalua3on;  to  collect  life  change  stories,  as  well  as  help  staff  and  leadership  develop  a  beIer  scorecard  for  effec3veness.  (This  is  s3ll  hard  to  pin  down.)

WHAT WE LEARNED…2013 Roundtable take-aways

MP M PPRINCIPLE

We work to help churches find correct principles in disciple

making

MODELS

There are different models that are

effect. One size does not fit all.

PROCESS

We are challenging churches to move

from a program to a process.

Multiplication

The key change is that we want disciples to make disciples…its about multiplication

ABOUT SBTC DISCIPLE MAKINGour focus

What the group asked us to consider last year from this meeting.

“Find the young gun pastors - get them

connected with disciple making pastors”

“Create networks of Disciple Making

Pastors”

CONSIDER THIS

Step 1Mandate to help churches make disciples.

Step 2

Learn what is happening in disciple making in Texas

Step 3develop clear principles that are reproducible for disciple making

Step 5mobilize disciple makers across the state

Step 4

find a place for learning and growing IGNITE

Step 8

Pray and continue to make disciplesStep 6

build up the regional leadership

Step 7Continue to develop and add new components and leaders

STATEWIDE DISCIPLE MAKING PLANSteps to change

SBTC DISCIPLE MAKING FOCUS

We (SBTC) don't make disciples

It’s about you multiplying yourselves

One Pastor/Minister at a time

RESULT: We multiply movements all around Texas and beyond.

What I am asking you to

Prayerfully consider?

TWO

Commit to be a disciple making church…embody disciples who make disciples.

THREE

Prayerfully consider connecting with the Ignite Conference

ONE

Pray for a movement of God across Texas in Disciple Making

FOUR

Host a disciple making meeting in your church with local pastors to develop pastoral discussions on disciple making

FIVEConsider working with the SBTC to be a regional Disciple Making center

SIX

Consider meeting with us again here next year to see where the Lord has taken us.

What can you do?REGIONAL PLAN

TARGET PASTORS/LEADERS Find Pastors/Leaders in your area that you can target to begin talking with them about disciple making.

!

PARTNER Plan with local Pastors/Leaders to partner with them if they are making disciples to reach your association

!

MENTOR PASTORS/LEADERS Pastors/Leaders who are not making disciples (don’t have time or don't understand disciple making), but want to connect with you on disciple making

DISCIPLE PASTORS/LEADERS If you find someone who wants to really make disciples and is willing to let you disciple him. Begin multiplying your influence.
