By Dr. Patricia L. BatistaI am always so proud to be able to share with you the accomplishments of our students! As superintendent, it is a great joy of mine to see our students develop their abilities and expand their knowledge as they progress from pre-k to 12th grade. It is exciting to see them grow their leadership skills and see them give generously of their time and talents to their school and community. March is just around the corner, and I would like to invite you to our very special Community Dinner. This event is being planned for March 24th at 6:00 pm. It is held in the Ionia High School gymnasium. This is our 30th Annual Community Dinner and it will showcase the ac-

complishments of many of our high school students. The program includes art displays from our el-ementary, middle, and high school students. We begin the evening’s program with music provided by our very own Community Band! During the evening you will hear musical performances by members of our High School Jazz Band and Soloists from our Vocal Music Program. The highlight for me is our Parade of Students and their accomplishments! I believe it will warm your heart and make you very proud when you hear all of the great things that students have achieved in the Ionia Public Schools and the positive contributions students are making in the world around them. Our students are working very hard every day and many indi-viduals are there to help them accomplish their goals. So on behalf of our students, I would like to thank all members of the Ionia Public Schools staff for your hard work, guidance, care, love, and efforts every day with every child. I would like to thank our parents and our community for the support you give to the Ionia Public Schools and most importantly the support you give to all children. Together we are making a difference for all of our students, and because of you, students are succeeding every day!

30th Annual Community Dinner is Coming Soon!

By: Ben Kirby Associate Superintendent

Students and schools in the state of Michigan have grown accustomed to MEAP testing for students in grades 3-8 each fall. Did you no-tice this year, that there was no test? Out with the old and in with the new M-STEP. This new test will replace the 44 year old MEAP test when it is administered this spring. The M-Step will include summa-tive assessments designed to mea-sure student growth effectively for today’s students. English language arts and mathematics will be assessed in grades 3–8, science in grades 4 and 7, and social studies in grades 5 and 8. It also in-cludes the Michigan Merit Examination in 11th grade which consists of the ACT Plus Writing, WorkKeys, and M-STEP summa-tive tests in English language arts, math-ematics, science, and social studies.

Staff have been preparing for the online ad-ministration by monitoring the technology infrastructure, piloting tests with students over the past two years, and adjusting the

MEAP Testing Replaced by M-Step this Spring

teaching and learning to better reflect the increased rigor. The days of multiple choice only questions are gone. The students will be answering multiple choice, constructed response questions, classroom activities, and performance tasks. These types of ques-tions will dig deeper into the students un-derstanding of the content. The classroom activities and performance tasks are linked together. Teachers and students will do the classroom activity 1-3 days prior to the per-formance task. The information in the activ-

ity is required to do the task. It will be important that students attend during the testing period to com-plete the required tests.

The 11th grade students will begin their testing on March 3, 2015 by taking the ACT Plus Writing test and continue on March 4, 2015 when they take the WorkKeys test. The rest of the testing will take place after spring break. A state of Michigan testing schedule can be seen in the chart. Unique sched-ules will be created at each school to accommodate the testing that

will be conducted on computers.

Additional information about the M-Step can be found on the Michigan Department of Education Website http://www.mi.gov/mde/0,4615,7-140-22709_70117---,00.html or the district website www.ioniaschools.org under Resources – parents. Information about the testing schedules at each building will be distributed by the principals prior to testing.

Quizbusters TeamIonIA hIgh SChool wElCh hIgh SChool

The Quizbusters team competed in the fall in the Quizbusters TV show hosted by WKAR channel 23 at MSU.  The team advanced to the final four, defeating Frankenmuth, Holt, Saline, and Brighton in the process.  They fell to Okemos, 450 - 440, on the final second of the match.  This was the furthest that an IHS team has ever ad-vanced.  They now begin league play in January and February.

The Quizbusters competitors were Captain Will Talbot with Aus-tin Armentrout, Emily Rozich, Jarred Chrapek, and Holly Simon.  Their performances can be viewed online at http://video.wkar.org/program/quizbusters/.

The Curriculum Showcase spotlighted the Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) program currently in place at Welch.

On Thursday, January 22, Rather Elementary held a Family Math Night. There were 36 families for a total of 105 people in attendance. The Math Night, funded by Title 1 Parental Involvement Funds, started with a spaghetti dinner. Following the dinner, there was a math activity (tangrams).  The Dynamic School Assemblies presented an interactive program with live animals entitled, “Animals - The Real Super Heroes”.

A teacher in Ionia for nine years, Kelly Pierce-field has been selected for the America Achieves’ Michigan Educator Voice Fellowship (http://www.miedvoice.org) as a fellow for the 2014-15 school year.

As part of her work, Kelly participates in Educa-tor Voice activities. By sharing her classroom sto-ries and experiences with higher standards and the Common Core, Kelly will expand her reach beyond the walls of the middle school, help par-ents and other community members better un-derstand the shift to higher standards, and gen-erate more constructive conversations about the

future of public educa-tion in Michigan.

Regarding the Fellowship’s goals and aims, Kelly remarks, “I am looking forward to working with parents and educators to further understand the importance of rigor and high expectations in the classroom.”

Kelly believes in rigorous lessons that create and model a deeper understanding of concepts. Kel-ly is a member of the district English Language Arts curriculum team where she has helped implement the Common Core.

Family game night at Twin RiversStudents and their parents enjoyed some family fun at Family Game Night held at Twin Rivers Elementary School on Friday, January 23rd.  Twister, Tic Tac Toe and Don’t Break the Ice are just a few of the games that were available to play.  Connect 4 tournaments were held for both the students and adults - everyone had great fun!  This event was sponsored by the Twin Rivers Family School Or-ganization.
