Twins Community Fund Celebrates 25 Years of Giving This season, the Twins Community Fund is celebrating 25 years of providing resources for kids in Twins Territory to enjoy America’s favorite pastime. Founded in 1991, the Fund provides grant opportunities, baseball and softball clinics, and other youth programs to kids in Upper Midwest, Southwest Florida, and Latin American communities. Since 1999, the Fund’s Fields for Kids program has been responsible for renovating and constructing over 650 youth baseball and softball fields. “Thousands of families are affected each year by the Fund’s giving, which we plan to build on for many more years to come,” says Bryan Donaldson, the Fund’s executive director. Local Students Reflect on Jackie Robinson’s Legacy Throughout the month of March, Minnesota Twins staff visited 20 elementary schools to share and discuss Jackie Robinson’s accomplishments with fourth and fifth grade students. Students then had the opportunity to submit essays explaining how using Jackie Robinson’s nine core values (courage, determination, teamwork, persistence, integrity, citizenship, justice, commitment, and excellence) has helped them overcome their own personal barriers. Ten students were honored on the field during a Jackie Robinson Day pregame ceremony for their winning submissions. Great job, kids! Twins Sponsor Green Card Voices Publication The Minnesota Twins are proud to sponsor the publication of Green Card Youth Voices: Immigration Stories from an American High School, a book that shows life through the eyes of young immigrants who attend Wellstone International High School in Minneapolis. The nonprofit organization Green Card Voices works to improve the public’s attitude toward immigrants and believes storytelling is essential in this process. In fact, Twins fans got to hear a bit of student Wendy Saint-Felix’s story when he threw out our ceremonial first pitch on Jackie Robinson Day April 15. Wendy is an example of a student who uses Robinson’s values to overcome life’s curveballs. Click here to read some of the students’ stories. City of Minneapolis Hosts Bridges to Manhood Conference On April 1, the City of Minneapolis held a “Bridges to Manhood” Conference at Minneapolis Community and Technical College. Twins Diversity Marketing Director Miguel Ramos joined more than 200 young men and more than 30 adult mentors to help combat youth violence in the region. Kicking off National Youth Violence Prevention Week, the conference was free and designed to empower young men of color ages 14-24. The event also fell in line with President Obama’s “My Brother’s Keeper” initiative and was partnered with the African American Education and Empowerment Program. connect Celebrating the diversity of Twins Territory april 2016 Follow us on Twitter @TwinsDiversity connect www.TwinsBaseball.com/Diversity Follow us on Twitter @TwinsDiversity For more information contact [email protected] Click here for Twins ticket information TICKETS Spotlight Player of the Month EDUARDO ESCOBAR • Born: January 5, 1989 in Villa de Cura, Venezuela • Position: Utility infielder • Height: 5'10" • Weight: 185 • Bats: Switch • Throws: Right MLB Debut: September 2, 2011 Twins starting player Eduardo Escobar was acquired by Minnesota in 2012.
