Production of a Newspaper
Correspondents send in their
stories from the location of the story – done by

1. Typesetting
– Layout of the typed page: needs to be easy to read. How can this be done: Correct font Correct size Kerning-space between individual letters in a word Leading (pronounced “Ledding”)-space between the lines on
the page. Length of each line Size of the body text font.
– Difficult job– Off for plate making

2. Transmitting Complete Pages
• The accepted layout of the page has been received and is approved; this is then send to the printing plant. Two ways of doing this:

3a) The First Way of Printing
1. Page is printed2. Image is burned onto a light-sensitive
film3. Page placed in large fax machine4. The image is transferred to the print
plant

3b) The Second Way of Printing
1. The news paper is completed in digital form
2. This is then sent to the satellites3. It is then transmitted by the satellite
to various printing plants (Owned by the company)

4. Computerised Plate Making
1. Images from negatives are transferred to printing plates
2. Ultraviolet light passes through the film negatives; exposing the printing plate
3. A chemical reaction occurs 4. This causes the light-sensitive coating
on the aluminium to develop an image.

5. Printing-Offset Lithography
1. Aluminium plate is fixed into printing press.
2. This press consists of 3 rollers:a. Plate cylinderb. Blanket cylinderc. Impression cylinder
3. Aluminium plates are flexible bend around the plate cylinder

4. Roller with plate attached has ink directed onto it
5. This then rotates against the blanket cylinder (this is rubberised -> roller forms and image on the plate roller)
6. Blanket roller presses against the paper the image is printed

6. The third roller presses paper against the blanket cylinder
7. Large sheets printed (copies of the news paper) cut into separate versions of the news paper.
