    We already learned that “to get” can be used when talking about “to buy” or

    “to become or show a state of change.” There are other ways in which “get”

    can be used:

     To reach or arrive at a place:

    prepositions of direction

    Prepositions of direction are used to clarify the direction of someone or something. They appear with verbs of motion.

    across from one side to the other She ran across the bridge.

    along parallel to the length or direction of I was walking along the road.

    around to go along the outside of a place to get to the other side Go around the park to get to the train station.

    down along the course of  Walk down the street and turn left.

    into to move inside of something He got into the ambulance.

    off  moving away / down from Laura and Paul got off  the ship.

    onto to a place or position on; upon The tow truck drove onto Main Street.

    out of  to move outside of something He got out of  the truck.

    past beyond in position I ride my bicycle past the park on my way to school.

    through in at one end and out at the other The train passes through town every Sunday.

    toward in the direction of He drove toward the stop sign. 

    up to move toward an elevated place Walk  up the stairs.

     There are several verb-preposition combinations that have the meaning of continuing or resuming an

    action. These are casual expressions, often used with an exclamation for emphasis.

    Some of the expressions have idiomatic meanings.

    hang on (to the rope)! continue to hold tightly or please wait!

    carry on resume what you were doing

    dream on continue dreaming; a funny way of saying “that is an unrealistic goal”

    lead on resume or continue leading us

    rock on continue playing rock music or continue doing a great job!
