Last week’s gospel, in which Jesus asked
his disciples, ‘Who do you say I am?’
marked a turning point in the gospel of
Mark. Having established in the minds of
the disciples that he is indeed the Messiah,
Jesus now begins to explore with them what
that really means and also what it means to
be a follower – a disciple – of the Messiah
who must be put to death. Having finally
come to some level of understanding that
Jesus is the Messiah, the disciples have
latched on to a very limited understanding
of Jesus’ Messiahship. They have assumed
that being Messiah meant that Jesus was
going to lead a triumphant victory over all
the woes of the Jews – it was a common
understanding and expectation of what the
Messiah would do. With this in mind, the
disciples begin to argue amongst
themselves about who will hold positions of
respect and power in the aftermath of Jesus’
great triumph. Despite what Jesus had just
said about being put to death and rising
again, the disciples simply couldn’t grasp
what he was saying and fell back onto a
familiar picture of the Messiah.
To really shake up the disciples and try to
make them pay attention to what he was
saying to them, Jesus put his arms around a
small child and told the disciples they had
to welcome little children in his name. Like
so many gospel images there is more going
on here than meets the eye. Children were
regarded as complete nobodies in the
culture of the time. They had no status and
absolutely no authority. Jesus is saying to
the disciples, don’t argue about who will be
the greatest; this child – this nobody – is
greater than anyone who lords it over others.
If you treat a nobody like this with respect,
you treat me with respect. © Greg Sunter

Reflection
Historical Context – Messianic
Expectation
The term Messiah means anointed one. In
the era of the Kings of Israel, quite literally
someone was designated King by being
anointed – having oil poured over their head.
It’s easy to see that when the people of Israel
spoke about a ‘Messiah’ (an ‘anointed one’)
who would restore justice and peace, they
had in mind a great King. They even
expected that the new king would come
from the line of David, the line of the great
kings of their history. Jesus was working
against centuries of tradition when he tried
to get the disciples to see that the Messiah
could be something else.
Scriptural Context – 3 Predictions
This gospel event is the second of three
occasions in the gospel of Mark when Jesus
clearly makes a prediction about his death
and subsequent resurrection. They occur in
chapters 8, 9 and 10 of the gospel and all
three are associated with the disciples’ lack
of understanding about the mission and fate
of Jesus. In each case, Jesus could not speak
more plainly about what will happen to him
and yet the disciples fail to understand.
These three chapters have an overarching
image of the disciples’ ‘blindness’ to the
truth of Jesus’ message.
Have you thought? – Last of all?
Jesus tells his disciples that if anyone wants
to be first, they must make themself last of
all and servant of all. This is as challenging
to us today as it was to the disciples and
early Christians. Our world seems to
revolve around position, status and power –
whoever has the most toys wins! But what
Jesus advocated was a leadership based on
being of service to others. Being powerful
simply means you are in a position to help
even more people. Putting yourself last,
instead of first, gives respect, dignity and
power to others rather than to yourself.
Questions for Adults
Why might Jesus have wanted to go away
secretly to instruct his disciples? Have you
ever had the disciples’ experience of
completely missing an important point?
What are the attributes of being ‘first’ in our
contemporary society? How is it possible to
be first by making yourself last of all? Who
do you need to be more welcoming toward?

A man stands on the floor of a factory, not doing any work. The CEO
comes up and asks his monthly salary. The man tells him it is $1000.
The CEO pulls out his wallet, gives the man $1000 and says, “Here's
your month salary. I pay people to work here. Get out and never
come back”.
The man leaves.
The CEO asks the other workers, “Who was that guy?”
They tell him he was the pizza delivery man.

REFLECTION FOR YOUNG PEOPLE by Lisa-Marie Calderone-Stewart
You often see them at football or cricket or basketball games – the giant hands with the index finger pointing up, and the rest of the fingers curled together. They usually say ‘number one’.
Jesus says if we focus on being number one, then we certainly are not number one. If we try to say we are the best, or the most important, or the greatest, then we truly are not. If we do our best to not brag but to serve everyone else’s needs and to build up everyone else’s confidence, that is the way to true stardom. How hard is it to be that way when the culture urges us to be number one? How would Jesus handle it if he were a teenager at your school this year? Can you follow his example? How? Why or why not?
Many teenagers report that they have more fun being members of social sporting teams than they do on a school or college team. They play more often, receive less criticism, and are under less pressure that way.
How is that preference related to the message of this Gospel?
If the goal is to always win and be the number one team, then most players fail, because there can only be one number one team in whatever sport, league or district you participate in; only one team can win. Everyone else loses. But if your goal is to learn, to put in the best possible effort, to improve and to have fun, then everyone can succeed; everyone wins. The score doesn’t matter. No one loses.
How is this philosophy of sports related to the Gospel message?
Could this philosophy of sports ever work in the professional area? Why or why not? In the high school area? Why or why not? In the college area? Why or why not?
Where does money enter into the picture? How is money connected to the current philosophy of sports? What would Jesus say about this connection?

SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL
Patron Saint of Charities, Prisoners and Volunteers
Feast Day : September 27th St. Vincent de Paul was a French Roman Catholic priest who
dedicated his life to serving the poor. Vincent de Paul was one of
six children born to poor peasants in the French village of Pouy on
April 24, 1581. His first formal education was provided by the
Franciscans. He did so well, he was hired to tutor the children of a
nearby wealthy family. He used the monies he earned teaching to
continue his formal studies in theology.
He was ordained in 1600, and in 1605, while on a ship traveling
from Marseilles to Narbone, he was captured, brought to Tunis and sold as a slave. Two
years later he and his master managed to escape and both returned to France St. Vincent
travelled to Rome, where he became a chaplain to the Count of Goigny and was placed in
charge of distributing money to the deserving poor.
He spent his life preaching and helping the poor. He built hospitals for the sick, and
ministered to convicts. He established seminaries, and founded a religious institute of
priests, commonly referred to now as the Vincentians.
The Vincentians remain with us today with nearly 4,000 members in 86 countries. St
Vincent was 80 years old when he died in Paris on September 27, 1660.
Two miracles have been attributed to St Vincent. Pope Benedict XIII beatified him on
August 13, 1729, and he was canonized by Pope Leo XIII on 16th June, 1737.
