This juried cometition and curated public exhibition is held in the landmark Paramount Theatre, a 1930s restored movie palace on the Narional Register of Historic Places.

Director JUAN PABLO ZARAMELLA was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He is an independent director and animator whose

acclaimed short films have screened worldwide. In 2008, he was selected for the Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors Showcase in Cannes. In 2010, the Annecy International Animation Festival presented a special program of his works. This year, LUMINARIS was shortlisted for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film.

Les Conquerants(The Conquerors)Directors: SAROLTA SZABO, TIBOR BANOCZKIWriters: Sarolta Szabo, Tibor BanoczkiProducers: Pascal Le Notre, Julie Roy, René ChenierCanada/France, Animation. 12 min., 2011SYNOPSIS: At the dawn of time, a young man and woman set out to conquer an inhospitable land and transform it into paradise. Between

prehistory and Genesis, Eden and hell, this animated film questions human conquests and the rise of civilizations.

Directors SAROLTA SZABO and TIBOR BANOCZKI both studied at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in Budapest. After graduation, they formed a partnership and moved to London. There Banoczki earned a master’s degree in animation direction from the National Film and Television School, and Szabo graduated from the Royal College of Art with

a master’s degree in philosophy. They currently live and work in Paris.

First Lesson in LoveDirector: TOMER WERECHSONWriters:Tomer WerechsonProducer: Tomer WerechsonIsrael, Narrative, 8 min,. 2013SYNOPSIS: A chance encounter leads to a quiet moment between two strangers who both need a connection.

Director TOMER WERECHSON was born in Jerusalem and is about to finish his BA in Film and Television at Tel Aviv University. During his studies he has written and directed numerous

short films, as well as serving as writer/director for a TV pilot. Tomer is also freelance director and cameraman, and a co-producer of the TV show SINGLES on Channel 2 in Israel.

Aquel No Era Yo(That Wasn’t Me)Director: ESTEBAN CRESPOWriter: Esteban CrespoProducer: José Luís Matas-NegreteSpain, Narrative, 20 min., 2012SYNOPSIS: “Being a soldier is not difficult: either you get used to it or they kill you. The hardest thing is getting used to living with your memories and being yourself after doing what you have done.”

Director ESTEBAN CRESPO began his career as a director and screenwriter in the documentary world, producing numerous works for television. He later became a content accessor and analyst for children’s programs on TVE. His short films have screened worldwide, and his film LATA was nominated for Best Fiction Short Film at the 2010 Goya Awards. NADIE TIENE LA CULPA won the Jury Prize at the 2011 Montreal International Film Festival.

Kachho Gadulo(Little Gypsy)Directors: SAPTESH CHAUBAL, PRANAY PATWARDHAN, SHIVANGI RANAWATProducer: DSK SupinfocomIndia, Animation, 6 min., 2012SYNOPSIS: A story of the vibrant and diverse culture of India as seen through a young child’s free and beautiful imagination.

Director PRANAY PATWARDHAN was born and grew up in Mumbai, before moving to Pune

in 2000. Currently based in Bangalore, he works as a lighting artist at Elxsi Bangalore. SAPTESH CHAUBAL was born and raised in Mumbai and currently resides in Pune where he currently works in the fields of 3D art and game design. SHIVANGI RANAWAT was born in Rajasthan, and has studied computer science at Bangalore, and animation at DSK Supinfocom, Pune.

RungDirector: CHRIS HANRATTYWriter: Mike McPhadenProducer: Jennifer MesichCanada, Narrative, 9 min., 2011SYNOPSIS: After a Cathedral bell ringer passes away, his spot on the bell ringing choir is up for grabs. Nancy believes she is the only real choice to take his spot, but Leanne has other ideas.

Director CHRIS HANRATTY is a Toronto-based filmmaker and theatre director. His first short

film, FAMILY FIRST, screened at Palm Spring ShortFest and was nominated for a 2011 Golden Sheaf Award. He is collaborating with the writer and producer of RUNG on the development of his first feature film.

Dr. BreakfastDirector: STEPHEN P. NEARYWriter: Stephen P. NearyProducer: Stephen P. NearyUSA, Animation, 7 min., 2011SYNOPSIS: One day at breakfast, a man’s soul bursts out of his eyeball. While his soul roams the earth eating everything in sight, two wild deer bathe and clothe the man’s catatonic body.

Director STEPHEN P. NEARY is a Hoosier-born, New York based animator, currently working as a story artist at Blue Sky Studios. There, he’s

boarded on ICE AGE 3, RIO, and ICE AGE 4. Stephen’s NYU senior film, CHICKEN COWBOY won Best Animation at AFI Dallas in 2009. It was later broadcast on ARTE in Germany and France, and screened at the Director’s Guild of America.

Life Vest Under Your SeatDirectors: MARIA GIRÁLDEZ, MIGUEL PROVENCIOWriters: Maria Giráldez, Lidia Provencio, Miguel ProvencioProducer: Maria Giráldez, Miguel ProvencioSpain, Narrative, 18 min., 2012SYNOPSIS: The calmness of a Madrid-Miami Flight is altered by Mauro, an arrogant passenger, who decides to skip the rules of conduct and safety to deal with an obnoxious child passenger.

After getting their degrees in Audiovisual Communication and Advertising respectively, directors MARIA GIRÁLDEZ and MIGUEL PROVENCIO formed their own production company. La Flaka Films. Their short films have screened worldwide to numerous critical awards including EL OPOSITOR, which won 14 national awards.

Family NightmareDirector: DUSTIN GUY DEFAWriter: Dustin Guy DefaProducer: Dustin Guy DefaUSA, Documentary, 10 min., 2011SYNOPSIS: This dizzying trip through the mid-1990s with a dysfunctional American family is a crumpled letter from a filmmaker to his family: a shattered kaleidoscope of actual found footage of the artist’s childhood assembled to reveal the destructive patterns that have trapped its members.

Director DUSTIN GUY DEFA is a director, producer, editor and actor who has been making movies since he was eleven. His feature film BAD FEVER premiered at the 2011 SXSW Film Festival and is currently distributed by Factory 25. Originally from Salt Lake CIty (where FAMILY NIGHTMARE takes place), he now lives in Brooklyn, New York.

After serving as an assistant director in the film industry for a number of years, Director XAVIER

DOUIN began writing and developing different projects. He considers this a natural progression, because it allowed him to combine two different jobs that he practiced with a passion. This is his first short film.

DreamcatcherDirector: LÉO MÉDARDWriter: Léo MédardProducers: Atelier de Réalisation (Marianne Binard)Belgium, Narrative, 18 min., 2011SYNOPSIS: Linda, a forty-year old woman, goes through a violent car accident and wakes up at the hospital after a confusing comatic experience. Back home, she must face a painful recovery and her difficult relationship with Jonas, her cruel teenage son.

Director LÉO MÉDARD was born near St-Etienne, France, and studied film at the Lyon II University. In 2011 he graduated from the INSAS (Brussels) with an emphasis in directing. During the last five years he has written and directed a number of award-winning short films, and is currently shooting a documentary in Germany with the assistance of a grant from the Kassel Dokfest Film Festival.

The Perfect FitDirector: TALI YANKELEVICHProducer: Finlay PretsellScotland, Documentary, 9 min., 2011SYNOPSIS: Ballet shoes may be worn by delicate girls, but they’re crafted by burly men whose hands tell another story. THE PERFECT FIT delves into the world of professional ballet dancing as seen through the eyes of a shoemaker who desperately strives to make the shoe as comfortable as possible.

Director TALI YANKELEVICH directed THE HOUSEKEEPER in 2009. This observational

portrait of an Orthodox priest and his housekeeper screened at festivals worldwide, including Silverdocs, and went on to win the Royal Television Student Factual Award. This film has been shortlisted for the 2013 Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Film.

Director DREA COOPER is a filmmaker and commercial director based in San Francisco. ZACKARY CANEPARI is a photographer and commercial director based in Los Angeles. Last summer they teamed up to create the award-

winning, online, short documentary series CALIFORNIA IS A PLACE. They have worked around the world in India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Kosovo, Nigeria, Taiwan, Columbia, and Mexico. Their commercial work includes projects for Apple, Google, Chevrolet, Ray-Ban, and Adidas. Together they are known as ZCDC.

Inquire WithinDirector: JAY ROSENBLATTWriter: Jay RosenblattProducer: Jay RosenblattUSA, Experimental, 4 min., 2012SYNOPSIS: A hypnotic, apocalyptic examination of false choices, double blinds, vulnerability and faith.

Director JAY ROSENBLATT is an internationally recognized artist who has been working as an independent filmmaker since 1980 and has completed over twenty-five films. His

work explores our emotional psychological cores. They have received over 100 awards and have screened throughout the world. Eight of his films have been at the Sundance Film Festival, and several of the films have shown on HOB/Cinemax, the Independent Film Channel, and the Sundance Channel. Originally from New York, he is currently the Program Director of the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival. He has a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology and is a recipient of a Guggenheim, USA Artists, and a Rockefeller fellowship.

Kthimi (The Return)Director: BLERTA ZEQIRIWriter: Shefqet GjocajProducer: Blerim GjociKosovo, Narrative, 20 min., 2011SYNOPSIS: Everyone thought he died during the war. Their family has grown by one child. Explaining is not easy.

Director BLERTA ZEQIRI is an award-winning Kosovar director and screenwriter. She has worked on a number of shorts and feature films. Her films have been screened widely, including at

the Oberhausen, Bradford, and New York International Film Festivals. Zequiri’s films include the shorts CHILDREN, THE DINNER, OK, EXIT,(with co-writer/director Lendita Zeqiraj and KOSOVA 2011 (with co-director Kaltrina Krasniqi). Zequiri and Lendita Zeqiraj also made the feature-length version of their film EXIT.
