Donna Kay and I had a great experience at the Lone Star Motorcycle Rally in Galveston, Nov. 6-8. I’ll have to admit that I had my reservations about joining the crowd of

400,000 most of whom were bikers, but we were drawn by the anticipation of being able to lead people to Jesus. We were not disappointed.

Mission JourneyMission Journey

Thursday morning we began with a time of training led by evangelist Ronnie Hill. He coached us on how to most effectively tell our own three-minute story of how Jesus had changed our lives. At 10 a.m. we opened the booth. Some of us stood out front asking people to come in and register for the $1,000 drawing. Others waited under the tent, ready to share with any who were willing to come in to register. It was amazing how many people walked into the tent and listened to our stories. By the end of the three days our 32 volunteers had shared with 1,060 peo-ple and 399 of them had trusted Jesus as Savior and Lord. Next week we will begin calling each per-son we won to Christ to follow up with them and encourage them to get involved in a Bible believing, Bible teaching church. We will be going back next November and our biggest need will be more volun-teers. Please mark your calendars right now and plan to go with us Nov. 5-7, 2015. If you are hesitant to go, let me encour-age you with two words: “Fear Not!” Don’t be afraid of the crowds. Don’t be afraid of the bikers. Don’t worry about how

you will get there, where you will park, how you will find the booth, what you will wear, what you will eat, or what you will say when a stranger walks up to you ready to hear your story. You do not need to be afraid. You do not need to worry. Going to the rally is easier than going to Six Flags. The Lord will be with you. He will guide you. He will watch over you. He will give you the words to say. And by the time you go home you will have shared your personal testimony with dozens of people and seen some of them come to Christ. Come for the whole event and take ad-vantage of free lodging in a church and free breakfast and dinner provided by a disaster relief feeding unit. Or drive down for the day. Or drive down and work one shift, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. or 2-7 p.m. But come. I am counting on a dozen vol-unteers from TRBA working each shift next year. The more volunteers we have, the more people will come to Jesus. It’s like a mission trip, but it’s only an hour and a half away from home. Think about this: Donna Kay and I shared Christ with more people and saw more peo-ple saved than we would normally be able to in an entire year. There were more people saved those three days than all of our TRBA churches baptized all of last year, three times as many saved in all of our Vacation Bible Schools. I want you to have a part in this next year. Commit to it now and calendar it now. All you have to do is tell people what your life used to be like before you met Jesus, how you came to know Jesus, and how your life has been different since meeting Jesus. Then you tell them that they can have the same kind of change you have experienced, right here and right now. And when they begin to nod their head and say, “Yes, I’d like to pray that prayer,” you will be so thankful you took the time and took the risk to be involved in Mission Lone Star.

Mission Lone Star

399 trust Jesus at cycle rally Borrowing an evangelism approach developed for the Sturgis S.D. Motorcycle Rally, TRBA and other Baptist partners sponsored a booth during Galveston’s Lone Star Motorcycle Rally in November and saw 399 people trust Jesus. Dubbed “Mission Lone Star,” the evangelistic effort centered on a booth offering a $1,000 drawing each of three nights, Nov. 6-8. To register for the draw-ing, people had to come into the booth and listen to a volunteer’s three minute story, a personal testimony of how Jesus had changed their life. “It was our first year, our first at-tempt, and we were not sure what to ex-pect,” said David Williams, TRBA director of missions. “We had been told that as many as one out of seven, about 14 per-cent, of those who came into the booth would pray to receive Jesus before they left.” Instead of 14 percent, the booth reg-istered 38 percent, 399 salvations out of 1,060 who heard a volunteer’s personal testimony. A total of 32 volunteers participated in the booth, including men and women from TRBA, Galveston Baptist Association, Golden Triangle Baptist Network, and Bell Baptist Association. Bell Association brought its disaster relief feeding unit and served breakfast and dinner to volunteers staying at Seaside Baptist Church in Ja-maica Beach. In addition to the evangelism booth, Mission Lone Star provided 15 chaplains who ministered to vendors at the event. They made 3,074 contacts and four ven-dors prayed to receive Christ. “I appreciate Jim Hamilton, Golden Triangle’s executive director, who spear-headed this effort, and Ronnie Hill, the evangelist who came to train us and en-courage us as we shared our testimonies” Williams said. Hamilton and Hill were the architects of the successful evangelistic outreach in Sturgis that has been dupli-cated at other cycling and racing events around the country. Williams said more volunteers are needed for the evangelism booth next year, Nov. 5-7. “We have two shifts a day for three days. We need a dozen TR Bap-tists during each shift,” he said.

Left to right are Clarissa Lopez, Lysel Agram, Christine Abcede, Kristelle Saceda, and Shane Maata. Ernest Nunn from TRBA shares his personal testimony with a young man. The crowd in Galveston was estimated at between 400,000 and 500,000 people. Sherri and Jerry Avery, TRBA friends and missionaries to Zambia back in the States for a few months, stand outside the booth encouraging people to come in and listen to a three-minute story.

Greg Kappas, left, poses for a “class photo” with the men he taught during the Training of Trainers event at TRBA, Nov. 11-12. They will be faculty for the Pastor Essentials class.

Cowboy Church Bible Study — Robert Smith leads a group of eleven at the initial meeting of First Liberty’s cowboy church. The group is meeting at 6 p.m. on Tuesdays for Bible study while a core group is formed. “Bring your Bible and a covered dish,” said Steve Bean, First Lib-erty’s pastor. “We eat at 6 and our study be-gins when everyone has their plates full.” Lo-cation is the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service Center, 501 Palmer Ave., Liberty.

Pastoral Essentials class starts Monday, Jan. 12 Men called by God to be pastors or church planters are invited to enroll in the Pastor Essentials course taught at the TRBA office Monday nights beginning Jan. 12. There is no charge for the course. “Over a year’s time we will train our men and prepare them to start a church or pastor an existing church in our area,” said David Williams, TRBA director of missions. “Rather than going somewhere else to attend Bible college or seminary, they will be able to stay here at home, keep their current jobs, and pursue God’s call on their lives.” The 6-9 p.m. class will include dinner and two teaching sessions. “This is not a Bible institute but a church planter/pastor training school,” Williams said. “In lieu of financial commit-ment we are expecting a high level of commitment from our students in com-pleting assignments, including ministry, evangelism and missions during the week.”

Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International Missions, Nov. 30 - Dec. 7

Mark Hardee, center, won the $1,000 drawing the first night of the Mission Lone Star evangelistic emphasis during the Lone Star Motorcycle Rally in Galveston, Nov. 6-8. To get his name into the hopper, earlier in the day Hardee had come into the booth and listened to J.E. Hail Jr. (looking on from the rear) tell in three minutes how Jesus had changed his life. Hardee’s big prize, however, was not the $1,000 he won at 7 p.m., but the free gift of forgiveness and eternal life when he trusted Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord an hour earlier. Hardee was one of 399 who prayed to re-ceive Christ when they came into the booth to register for the drawing. Congratulating Hardee are, left to right, Dale Hill, director of missions of Galveston Baptist Association; David Williams, director of missions of Trinity River Baptist Association; Jim Hamilton, executive director of Golden Triangle Baptist Network; and Ronnie Hill, evangelist. Story and more photos on page 3.

Evangelism conference features Nathan Cothen
