Torah Reading Page 2

Haftarah Page 21

In beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. And the earth, was tohu vavohu, and

darkness was over the mouth of the void, and the spirit of God hovered over the face of the

waters. (Breishit 1:1-2)

The year begins again, and with it, the cycle of Torah

reading starts anew, once again with the story of

creation. Each year, over and over again. We end and

begin in the same place, in the same way as the

generations before us.

Each time I read Breishit I am struck by something

new. I imagine the vast emptiness of space, occupied

only by the spirit of God. I wonder over the view of

eternity. I am amazed anew by connections between

Torah and science.

Creation isn’t clean and simple. The universe is tohu

vavohu - chaotic, frenzied, surrounded by darkness.

God hovers over these building blocks of life, pausing

as if to survey the materials, perhaps deciding whether

or not to continue. For a time all is quiet, then, with

two simple words, light explodes into being. One

wonders if, in that moment, all is light, for God must

take the time to separate the light from the darkness.

Where had the darkness gone? I ask myself, “Does this

describe the big bang?” I marvel at the process of

earth’s formation. Dividing the water of our

atmosphere from the waters of the oceans. Gathering

the land into one mass - Pangea? And the plants and

animals whose order follows what we now know

scientifically.

The Torah is not a study of history. Its words are not

scientific theory or law. It is not a text on family

dynamic or sociology. And yet, for so many, it shares

with us aspects of all of these topics and more. As a

person, my studies are informed by my beliefs. As a

Jew, my beliefs stem from the Torah, our foundational

text, which invites me to delve into each of these, not

only with wonder and amazement, but also with

questions and passion for learning. Our text is not kept

in academic halls. Nor is it taught only to children, to

be absorbed once, and never looked at again. Instead,

we hover over it year after year, trying to make sense

of the chaos.

Rashi tells us that the Torah does not necessarily present Ma’aseh B’reishit in

the order that everything happened.

Na’amah is mentioned in the descendants of Cain. Midrash teaches us that she

is Noah’s spouse.

The connection with my necktie is in the first aliyah.

Shabbat shalom.
