4 5RUSSIAN FILM WEEK 2019

WELCOME LETTER WELCOME LETTER

We are excited to bring you the 4th edi-tion of the Russian Film Week, that has now solidifi ed its place as the most prom-inent Russian fi lm culture event outside of Russia. This year we received more than 430 fi lm submissions to participate in the Russian Film Week panorama and our Golden Unicorn Awards, but what is re-markable is the amount of debut directors and cast in this year’s programme. Many of the debutant directors, actors and ac-tresses that you will see in our fi lms will

University

In 2019, Synergy University will become the general partner and co-organizer of the Russian Film Week for the fourth time. Over the years the festival has grown into the largest cross-cultural event in Europe and a big celebration for all lovers of good cinema.

The main goal of the festival is to draw at-tention to the Russian cinema and culture. We want the fi lms of our talented directors to be seen by as many people as possi-ble, not only in Russia but also in other

no doubt become tomorrow’s stars and household names. The Russian fi lm in-dustry is blooming with new content and talent; it is an exciting time. The Russian Film Week has also transformed over the years and achieved some incredible mile-stones.

2019 is the fi rst year that we are hosting our fi rst world premiere, the fi rst ever public screening of “Servant (a.k.a. The Peasant)“, as our opening fi lm. Moreover, we are hosting our opening night at the iconic Odeon Leicester Square, where international premieres and festival are held. It was always my dream to open the Russian Film Week at this venue. We have also continued to put on VR events, masterclasses, exhibitions and industry events, working tirelessly to create value for attendees, fi lmmakers and cast alike.

Just to check and reward the few who actually read this far of my welcome par-agraph, do message me on facebook to get a complimentary invitation to events. We have also focused on putting on a di-verse programme of fi lms this year from many genres, balanced between themes, debutants, prominent fi lmmakers and unusual motion pictures. There is now something for everyone and the best that Russian cinema has to off er. I thank our small team for their tremendous work, our sponsors and partners for making it all possible, and all our attendees and audi-ences for joining us in celebrating crea-tivity, culture and cinematographic talent.

countries. Another important goal of the festival is to support young fi lmmakers. Screening at the Russian Film Week is a great start for them, a chance to present their work to the international audience and to talk about what is really important for them.

This year the festival will be even larger and more  interesting both for the public and professionals from the fi lm  industry. We are waiting for the world premieres of feature fi lms, short fi lms and VR fi lms, the traditional Golden Unicorn Awards Ceremony, an  industry forum, creative meetings, masterclasses and many other events. In the program of documentary fi lms you would see the  incredible Kam-chatka landscapes, learn the history of the cult Russian musician  — the leader of the DDT group Yuri Shevchuk, get to know more about life and work of the fa-mous writer  Vladimir Sorokin, as well as discover people whose fates were close-ly connected with our country’s historical events. This is a new amazing experience that  I advise everyone to live through  in the cinemas of the Russian Film Week 2019.

I am sure the festival will open many inter-esting directors, actors and screenwriters to the world and will bring great pleasure to everyone who, like our team, is in love with cinema. See you at the festival!

Addressing to a dweller of a modern metropolis, the movie represents notes from a trav-eler’s diary, and through personal experience seeks to  inspire each of us to study the geography and travel more. Filming was carried out in 9 re-gions of Russia. Planetpics crew has managed to capture the most  viv-id masterpieces of Russia’s nature which even an experienced trave-ler  is not always lucky to witness: nesting guillemots on the Kola Pen-insula, cloud formation on Ai-Petri Mountain, swimming of a ringed seal and singing of gray whales  in Kam-chatka. The project was commis-sioned by the Russian Geographical Society in 12K-resolution.

Immersive Combat: Tesla PunkIn a post-dystopia an android defends her outpost of high technology. When her Kung Fu moves fail to beat her sword-wielding steampunk oppo-nent, she must escalate the fi ght and unleash the deadly energy weapons built into her own body.

Elbrus VRThe fi rst documentary fi lm in the for-mat of virtual reality about the ascent to Elbrus  — the highest point of Eu-rope. Every year hundreds of people come to Elbrus to climb to the top of this volcano. What causes them to en-dure fatigue and pain, lack of comfort and severe weather? Why, despite all the diffi culties that travelers are wait-ing for at every step, do people still aspire to the summit, even if they stay there only a few minutes, after hours of a long, exhausting journey? To an-swer these questions the viewer must go all the way to the top together with the fi lm group.

The Dawn VRThe plot of the fi lm touches on the topic of lucid dreaming and sleep pa-ralysis. In the main character, under mysterious circumstances, the older brother dies. Immediately after that, extremely realistic nightmares begin to haunt her. The girl goes to the In-stitute of Somnology, where she, together with other patients, is  im-mersed in a joint lucid dream. Howev-er, after waking up, they all fi nd them-selves  in a reality that  is worse than any nightmare.

The Nominal EmpireIn “The Nominal Empire” we’ve com-bined Quill animation and the con-cept of “physical theatre”. Putting on the Oculus headset, a participant fi nds himself as a citizen of the total-itarian theatrical country, where the stage director has become a dictator. To run the story, a participant needs to take correct “physical theatre” pos-es in reality and in VR.

Other People’s TroubleMost of us would walk away  if they saw a trouble happening. Will you do  it now? The fi lm  is comprised of the three novellas bounded by the current  issues of the urban socie-ty: separation, lack of social unity, lack of communication and compas-sion. By  immersing yourself  into this 360 VR fi lm you are confronted with a question, Should I do something or should I stay in my comfort zone? You are the one to choose. The project is aimed at increasing social awareness and empathy.
