The Chamber is Moving… Down the Block and Across the Street
Just a note that in the next several weeks we’ll be moving the office of The
Chamber of Commerce of Warren County down Main Street in Warrenton.
Our new address will be 131 South Main Street…in the Warrenton
Insurance building. Lots to do here to get ready, but I’ll keep you posted
on our progress.
It’s Warren County Map Time Again! Two Years Since Our Last Update
It’s hard to believe, but it was two years ago this month that we began
compiling our first new Warren County Map in several years…and now, it’s
time to update those maps! These new maps will be released in early
summer for our residents and visitors to Warren County. As before, the
support for this map will come from our great sponsoring businesses.
This week, I’ll be contacting previous and new sponsors along with our
representative from SouthEast Map Solutions. Once published, we’ll have
more than 5,000 maps to distribute promoting our wonderful county.
We plan to include the following features in this year’s map:
- Detailed street maps of Warrenton, Norlina & Macon
- Detailed road map of all roads within Warren County.
- Update locations of more than 40 sites in the Preservation
Warrenton Driving Tour of the County
- Update locations of the 50+ homes and businesses in the
Preservation Warrenton Walking Tour of Warrenton as well as the
African American Walking Tour of Warrenton.
- Addition of 16 additional Rosenwald Schools identified since the last
map
- Designation of the Haliwa-Saponi official State of NC area within
Warren County.
If your business is interested in becoming a sponsor we have a limited
number of ad positions available. Each sponsor receives a minimum of 50
maps for distribution in addition to the on-map ad. Please contact me via

As I’m sure you’re no doubt aware, there aren’t too many weeks here in
Warren County where we can honestly say, “There’s nothing to do!” Well,
just a preview, that on Saturday 28 April, this will be even more true than
ever! Allow me to briefly plan a full day for you and your family…
First…start your day at the corner of Macon & Bragg Streets in the BB&T
parking lot for the Warren Growers Association Warren County Farmers
Market. This local market runs from mid-April thru mid-October with local
fruits, vegetables, eggs, baked goods, preserves, herbs, flowers, dog
biscuits, mushrooms and plenty of handmade crafts. They’ll be open from
8am until Noon to start your day.
Then…just a ½ block stroll to Main Street to watch the start of the Run
Warrenton 5K Race in front of the Historic Warren County Courthouse.
The Town of Warrenton, in association with Cedric King, is hosting the 6th
Annual Run Warrenton 5K. This USATF Certified 5K run is through
downtown Warrenton. Proceeds will support Achilles International and
college scholarships for deserving students. Find out more at
runwarrenton.itsyourrace.com.
Then…shortly after the final runners cross the finish line you can spend
some time on the grounds of our Historic Warren County Courthouse for

and sponsored by Duke Energy & Maria Parham Health, this year’s event
features your favorite crafts, artisans, exhibits, fresh local vegetables, food
and more! Live entertainment features the TranZition Band and
GrassStreet Bluegrass Band. To stay up to date on Spring Fest and other
downtown Warrenton events, like them on Facebook at Warrenton
Festivals. Festivities continue from 10am until 4pm.
Then…when you need a short break from funnel cakes and delicious BBQ,
head two short blocks away to the Warren County Memorial Library for the
Annual Warrenton Archaeology Day from 10am until 3pm. See Native

VGCC Sixth Annual Dinner Theater: April 26 & 27 The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
Vance-Granville Community
College students will be joined by
veteran theater actors for the
college’s sixth annual Dinner
Theater production of “The
25th Annual Putnam County
Spelling Bee,” a musical comedy,
at the end of April.
A collaboration of Vance-
Granville’s Drama and Culinary
departments, the event is
scheduled for the evenings of
Thursday, April 26, and Friday,
April 27. Dinner will begin at 6 p.m. each evening in the Civic Center on the
college’s Main Campus. Tickets are being sold online for $30 each.
Among the veterans are Brian Westbrook of Durham, who is serving as
guest musical director and choreographer while also playing the role of
Comfort Counselor Mitch Mahoney; Andy Dickerson of Henderson,
portraying Chip Tolentino; and Peyton Grissom of Oxford, who will portray
Rona Lisa Peretti.
Westbrook, originally from Henderson, has been busy in the Triangle area
as well as locally. He has served as a director for the Henderson Rec
Players (HRP), a choreographer for Granville Little Theater (GLT) and has
performed in several shows for the Raleigh Little Theater and Theater in
the Park, as well as HRP, GLT and the McGregor Hall Performing Arts
Center.
Dickerson is a 20-year veteran of the Henderson Rec Players in addition to
performances for GLT and Temple Theatre in Sanford. Grissom has
performed with both HRP and GLT and currently is serving as a board
member for Granville Little Theatre. Employed as a registered nurse at
Duke University Hospital in Durham, she is an alumnus of Vance-Granville’s
nursing program.
Among the students in the cast from VGCC, some of them dually enrolled
at Vance County Early College High School (VCECHS), are sisters Allison
Hines, a “super senior” at VCECHS, and Samantha Hines, a junior at
VCECHS, playing, respectively, Leaf Coneybear and Olive Ostrovsky;
Brittney Patterson, portraying Logainne SchwartzandGrubeniere, in her last
year at VCECHS; and VGCC students Nick Kurtz, who plays William Barfee;
Blake Lee, portraying Vice Principal Douglas Panch; and Evan O’Geary,
playing March Park.
Winner of the Tony and the Drama Desk Awards for Best Book, “The
25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” has charmed audiences with its
effortless wit and humor. Featuring a fast-paced, wildly funny and touching
book by Rachel Sheinkin and a vibrant score by William Finn, this “bee” is
one unforgettable experience, critics have said.
For the occasion, Culinary Arts is preparing a menu featuring meatloaf and
vegetables, chicken pot pie and a veggie pot pie in addition to salad and
desserts.
Patrons are able to choose the table and specific seats they want at the
same time that they buy tickets online. The online link to the ticketing
service can be found at www.vgcc.edu/dinnertheater on the college’s
website.

Warren County Local Food Forum & Celebration Tuesday 15 May or Thursday 31 May
Just got this from
the folks at
Working
Landscapes and the
NC Cooperative
Extension…There
will be forums
during May to discuss locally grown foods and a great discussion about
what’s happening currently in our food system and what we can do to
make it more sustainable and robust.
Are you one of the early birds at the farmers market or someone who pulls
over to support the many roadside farm stands scattered across Warren
County?
Are you a proponent for local foods and supporting family farms and local
businesses?
If you answered yes, then the Warren County Local Foods Celebration and
Public Forums are the events for you! These events are being hosted by the
Warren County Local Foods Promotion Council on two dates: Tuesday, May
15th from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM at the Warren County Senior Center and
Thursday, May 31st from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM at Buck Spring Park.
The purpose of these Forums is to show how Warren County citizens can
get involved with the LFPC, to spread the knowledge of local food and farm
leaders, and to collect ideas from the public about what kind of local food
system they would like to see in Warren County.
To RSVP for this event, please fill out the Google Form here or call Alex

I-85 Ramp Closures thru April Closures in Place For 60 Days
Work on the Interstate 85 rehab project in Vance and Warren counties will
require the closure of a pair of ramps at exit 233 (U.S. 1/401), the closest
North Carolina exit to the Virginia state line.
The initial closure is for the northbound off ramp, and it took place on
Monday, Feb. 26. The on ramp for the northbound lanes was closed one
week later, on Monday, March 5. Both closures are scheduled to be in place
for 60 days, which means they should open in late April.
The closures are needed for ramp reconstruction and concrete paving at
exit 233.
A detour in place for the off ramp will direct drivers to get off one exit
earlier, at exit 229 (Oine Road), and then take Rooker Dairy Road north to
where it intersects with U.S. 1/401 by exit 233. The on-ramp detour sends
drivers southbound on I-85, where they would take exit 229, then get back
on the northbound side of the interstate.
It is all part of a $137 million project to improve over 20 miles of I-85
between Dabney Road in Vance County and the Virginia state line. The
work involves repairing the deteriorating road surface, as well as bridge
replacements and improvements on the interstate and roads crossing over
the highway.

Jacob Holt House Foundation: “Building Warrenton: A Vacant Properties Tour” Saturday 28 April 10am – 4pm
The Jacob Holt House
Foundation of Warren
County is hosting a
vacant properties tour
on Saturday, April 28th,
from 10 am-4 pm. The
event, titled “Building
Warrenton: A Vacant
Properties Tour,”
focuses primarily on
commercial properties
located in downtown
Warrenton. Most of the
properties lie within
the historic district of
Warrenton, which is on
the National Register of Historic Places.
The tour will start at 10 am at the Jacob Holt House, located at 122 South
Bragg Street, Warrenton. Visitors can pick up tour information and take a
look inside the home of Jacob Holt, a renowned 19th century carpenter,
builder, and contractor. Holt moved to Warrenton in the 1800s and
established one of North Carolina’s largest building firms.
“Jacob Holt’s ability to tailor building styles for his clients’ taste led to some
of the wonderful structures that we have here in the county today,” said
Richard Hunter, member of the Jacob Holt House Foundation Board of
Directors. “The fact that so many of these buildings are still remaining is a
testament to his skill.”
The Jacob Holt House Foundation decided to host this vacant properties
tour when the organization found they were back on the real estate market
at the end of last year. The downtown Taylor Building, which was donated
to the organization, had an interested buyer that fizzled out in late 2017.
The Jacob Holt House Foundation saw the tour as a way to not only
showcase the Taylor Building, but to contribute to the community in a
meaningful way. The Taylor Building has recently sold, but the organization
is carrying on with the tour.
“The name of this event, ‘Building Warrenton,’ alludes not only to the
legacy of Jacob Holt, but to the spirit of revitalization that so many have
been championing in Warrenton as of late,” said Charla Duncan, tour
planner and member of the Jacob Holt House Foundation Board of
Directors. “We hope that folks, both locally and from out of the county, will
view these spaces and be a part of the dialogue on how to build and
revitalize the community of Warrenton.”

like to see.
Visitors can start the tour at the Jacob Holt House, or join the tour later

Triangle North Healthcare Foundation is seeking partners to help
measurably improve health in Vance, Warren, Franklin, and Granville

Val Short. “Your project should fall into one of our five funding priorities,
which are Chronic Disease, Mental Health & Substance Abuse, Nutrition &
Physical Fitness, Success in School as related to Health & Fitness, and

The first step in the grant application process is the Letter of Interest,
which is actually a form, available on the online Grant Portal, and accessed
via the Foundation’s website, www.tnhfoundation.org
“We ask that anyone interested in applying for a grant should contact us
first to schedule a meeting,” said Short. “We can discuss the details of a
project and determine if it falls within our funding guidelines.” To schedule
a meeting to discuss a potential grant project, call 252-598-0763.
Since its first grant cycle in 2013, Triangle North Healthcare Foundation has
awarded over $1 million in grants to a variety of programs and projects

others. A full listing of TNHF grant programs is available on the
Foundation’s website.
The mission of the Foundation is “to encourage, support, and invest in
quality efforts that measurably improve health in the Triangle North
region.” The Foundation cannot accomplish this alone. “Through our
partnerships with community organizations, formed through grantmaking,
this Foundation can make a difference in the health status of our
communities,” said Mrs. Short. “Please let us hear from you!” she added.
Triangle North Healthcare Foundation is a nonprofit regional grantmaking
organization based in Henderson, NC, which supports and invests in health
and wellness initiatives and programs that will impact health in a positive
way in Warren, Vance, Granville, and Franklin counties. Funding for the

Quilters Lane to Install Sponsored Quilt Squares Downtown Almost All Squares Sponsored!
Here’s an important update from the folks at Quilters’ Lane: “All blocks
have been sponsored except for the Ohio Star (#6). We are so excited
about the support that this project has received so far. Email them at
[email protected] today to sponsor this last block!
If a community’s vitality is measured by the quality and beauty of its quilts,
Warren County, North Carolina radiates energy. Historically, quilts have
played a significant role in the identity and strength of families and
communities. Most
would agree that quilts
and quilting have the
unique ability to bring
people together to
reflect upon and
celebrate the goodness
of life.
The Town of
Warrenton’s Quilters
Lane Committee is
working on one of its
first installation pieces-
a hanging of quilt blocks
in honor of patterns
traditionally used by communities of quilters in Warren County. Quilting has
been a tradition that binds in this community for generations. The Quilters
Lane Committee invites the community to celebrate the heritage of quilting in Warren County by becoming patrons of the “Quilts that Bind” installation.
Each quilt block represents a traditional pattern from a Warren County
community. Patrons of this project can purchase a quilt block to hang on
the Courthouse square at the corner of Front Street and W. Market Street.
Each block measures 3’x3’ and will be hand crafted and hand painted by
local artisans. Each block is $150, and patrons are able to select which
block they want to sponsor as long as it has not already been selected.
Patron sponsors will be included by name on the accompanying installation
signage, and are allowed to purchase the block in memory or honor of a person or entity.
Blocks will be installed along the brick wall leading to the Courthouse from
Front Street, facing W. Market Street. Blocks will be created to last in the
elements for outdoor display. All installations on “Quilters Lane” are of a
temporal nature. These pieces will hang for years to come.
For more information, email [email protected] or call
the Town of Warrenton. You may also visit Facebook
@QuiltersLaneWarrenton.
Here is information about the Quilt blocks from The Warren Record:
Patterns that will be represented in the quilt block installation depicted in
the image shown above are, from left to right:
TOP ROW
Grandmother’s Fan
Some Warren County families have favorite quilt blocks, and down on
Stagecoach Road, Nell Hicks’ mother and grandmother loved making quilts
with the “Grandmother’s Fan” block.
North Star
For many quilters, the “North Star” pattern represents hope. Before
emancipation, the expression “follow the North Star” referred to directions
given to enslaved freedom seekers, directions to the northern U.S. and to
Canada, away from the plantation and out of bondage. Crystal Myrick, a
young woman new to quilting, made this “North Star” quilt pattern, which
signals hope for the quilting tradition in Warren County.
Carolina Lily
Nothing could be finer than the “Carolina Lily” block. It is one of those quilt
blocks that every quilters wants to try making. Helen Rogers Fleming
Ellington, who lived on Wilcox Street, Warrenton, made the most beautiful
“Carolina Lily” ever using silk, satin and dress rayon. The “Carolina Lily”
pattern reflects the desire for beauty using the language of flowers. The
pattern has been popular since the mid-1800s.
Cactus Star
Traveling northeast through Warren County toward the Lake Gaston area,
we come to what is known as the Olive Grove community, where some of
the finest quilters in the country lived, farmed, worshiped and made quilts.
Roberta Twitty Gardner lived in Olive Grove and hand-pieced and hand-
quilted the “Cactus Star” in the 1950s.
Cog Wheel
Bessie Wright Fitts also lived in Olive Grove, and like her neighbor quilters,
was extraordinary. She made the intricate “Cog Wheel” block quilt.
BOTTOM ROW
Ohio Star
The “Ohio Star” pattern appeared in the early 1800s and surged in
popularity in the 1930s. Sug Davis’s “Ohio Star” block made a lovely quilt.
Courthouse Steps
The “Courthouse Steps” is a simple block with one dark fabric square in the
middle and the same color light fabric strips on opposite ends of the
square. Flip it around and add the dark fabric strips on opposite ends,
repeat, repeat and soon there is a complete quilt block.
Nine-Patch
In the Ridgeway community, Isabelle Ada Jordon would cut her blocks for
her quilt tops and store them in a shoebox until she was ready to assemble
them, usually when the weather cooled down. She loved the “Nine-Patch”
block because it was simple, but “oh so beautiful” when made up into a
quilt.
Cherry Basket
Ridgeway native Helen Mitchell moved to New York City and came back
home with a lot of fancy quilts, some made with silks and rayon in the
“Cherry Basket” block pattern.
Eight Point Star
It didn’t too much matter what cloth women used to make a quilt – feed
sacks, worn-out men’s pants, dress-maker scraps, or brand new cloth from
the downtown store – the quilts always turned out lovely. Portia Jenkins
Harris lived in Warrenton and made an entire “Eight Point Star” quilt out of
feedbags.

Warrenton & Warren County Pass Resolution for Public Arts Day Saturday 2 June
Two local government entities have passed resolutions to annually
recognize the first Saturday in June as Public Arts Day. The initial request
for the Town of Warrenton to consider a public art day resolution came
from the Town of Warrenton’s Quilters Lane Committee, and was supported
by the Warren County Arts Council. A resolution was drafted by Mayor
Walter Gardner with input from both committees. The Town of Warrenton
Board of Commissioners passed a resolution at their March 19th board
meeting, and the Warren County Board of Commissioners passed their
version at an April 2nd board meeting.
“Passing a resolution recognizing the value that the arts have historically
brought to our communities, and continue to bring to our communities, is a
great step forward in revitalization,” said Quilters Lane Committee co-chair
and Warren County Arts Council board member, Charla Duncan.
Former art educator of Warren County High School for thirty-seven years,
Victoria Lehman, is Chair of the Warren County Arts Council, a member of
the Quilters Lane Committee, and a member of the Town of Warrenton
Revitalization Committee. When asked about the presence of public art and
the passing of these resolutions, she commented, “Look at any place that
has made progress and smart growth as a community in the past thirty
years, and you will see public art.”
Both resolutions establishing Public Arts Day contain the following:
Whereas, arts comprise a rich array of disciplines including dance, music,
theatre, media arts, literature, design, and visual arts; and
Whereas, the arts affect every aspect of life in America today including the
economy, social problem solving, job creation, education, creativity, and
community livability; and
Whereas, public art helps to create memorable experiences that are vital
to community development; and
Whereas, public art plays a vital role in creating a sense of identity and
understanding of the places we live, work, and play.
The resolutions also acknowledge the work that the Quilters Lane
Committee is doing in downtown Warrenton to revitalize the town through
public art and to recognize the rich and diverse heritage of the quilting arts
in Warren County.

stated that he “would like to thank the County Commissioners for the
support they’ve shown to the Quilters Lane Committee and its developing
art projects.”

April Update From Five Oaks Beef Beef You Can Trust!
Stew Beef. The Under-Appreciated
Beef…
Of all the cuts of beef, we believe Stew beef is quite possibly the most
under appreciated. So, what is Stew Beef? It is relatively inexpensive and
very versatile. Stew beef consists of small, about 1”, chunks of lean beef
that has been trimmed from all over, even the rib and loin areas that
ultimately become Ribeyes, New York Strips and Filet Mignon. It has all the
great flavor of these more expensive cuts of Five Oaks Beef but sometimes
a little less tender, but still overall a great value. It’s great for beef stew,
obviously, but is also great to make chili, beef stroganoff, beef bourgignon
and can be cut into smaller chunks and marinated for some pretty good
Kabobs on the grill! If you haven’t already, we really recommend that you
give it a try.
Warren County Farmers Market…
It’s sometimes a little hard to imagine, specially this morning with the
outside temperature at about 31° but the Farmers Market is scheduled to
open for the season on April 21! We know that most of you do shop at the
Farmers Market regularly during the season and we always enjoy seeing
you there! For those of you who haven’t been to the market, we really
encourage you to stop by on Saturday mornings between 8:00 am and
noon. The market is small but growing rapidly and offers great local farm to
table products!
Five Oaks Beef Soon To Be At The
Lake Gaston Seafood Market…
Linda and I are very excited to announce that Five Oaks Beef will be
available, starting around the 1st of May, at the Lake Gaston Seafood
Market. The market will be open on Friday afternoons and all day Saturday
and is part of ‘The Corner Lot’ which is a great local family venue offering
great seafood (and soon great beef ☺) , Softserve Ice Cream and toppings,
Sno Balls in 36 flavors, a flea market and miniature golf!
They’re located just a few miles north of the Eaton Ferry bridge on River
Road. A great destination for the whole family! Check it out!
Free Delivery…
Our customer base is expanding rapidly so many of you may not know that
we deliver Five Oaks Beef, free of charge to your home or business in the
area.
We routinely deliver several times a week in Warrenton and all around Lake
Gaston. And remember, there is no minimum order to take advantage of
free delivery!
Rate Five Oaks Beef On Facebook…
We have been posting for Five Oaks Beef on Facebook for about a year now
and it has been become a significant marketing channel for us. We bring in
new customers and maintain contact with many existing customers. We
announce sales, both the really well received Farm Flash sales and our
regular sales.
If you like Five Oaks Beef and you are on Facebook, we would very much
appreciate you taking a minute or two to rate Five Oaks Beef and write a
short review. You can find us on Facebook at
https://www.facebook.com/FiveOaksBeef. Even a sentence or two would be
great! We appreciate you as a customer and thank you for your support.
Registration Opens for Tour de Vance Cycling Event Scheduled for 28 April
Registration is now underway for the Sixth Annual Tour de Vance Bike Ride
scheduled for Saturday, April 28. The ride has been growing steadily since
its inception, drawing families and first-timers in addition to the most
seasoned of cyclists for four separate cycling events.
For the first time, proceeds from the ride will benefit the Endowment Fund
at Vance-Granville Community College, with donations supporting
scholarships for students enrolled in Health Sciences programs at the
college.
Several different options are available for cyclists. The 10-mile route is
ideal for youth, families and beginners. A 20-mile course suits riders ready
for a bit more distance. Experienced cyclists can choose a 31-mile "Forest
and Farmland" circle route through the country or a 62-mile "Kerr Lake
Look" that adds to that 31-mile circle route an out-and-back spur to the
lake past the Nutbush Creek State Recreation Area.
The rides will start and finish at VGCC’s Main Campus, located off Interstate
85 and Poplar Creek Road at 200 Community College Road in Henderson.
"This event has become a hit not just with locals but also with cyclists from
the surrounding area who enjoy an organized event that is challenging but
also takes them on a view of the beautiful countryside in our area," said
Wendy Meyer-Goodwin, who has been working as event organizer since the
Tour de Vance began. "Last year, we had our largest number of
participants ever."
All riders can register through the Vance-Granville Community College
website at vgcc.edu/tourdevance. Online registration will end at 5 p.m.
on Friday, April 27. On-site registration will be an option at 7:30 a.m. on
the day of the event.
The 10-mile ride will cost $10 for each rider. The 20-mile ride will cost $20
for those who register by Feb. 28, increasing to $25 thereafter. The 31-
mile and 62-mile (or “metric century”) rides will cost $30 for those who
register by Feb. 28, increasing to $40 thereafter.
"Vance-Granville's Endowment Fund is honored to be associated with an
event that has become such a success," said Eddie Ferguson, director of
the VGCC Endowment Fund. "This bike ride promotes the importance of
exercise and good health. We are pleased to use these proceeds to help our
students enrolled in the many Health Sciences programs at VGCC."
VGCC offers curriculum programs including Associate Degree Nursing,
Radiography, Practical Nursing, Histotechnology, Medical Assisting and
Pharmacy Technology.
Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m. on April 28. The 62-mile ride starts at 8:30
a.m., the 31-mile ride at 9:30, the 20-mile ride at 10 a.m., and the 10-mile
ride at 10:30 a.m. Law enforcement will accompany riders on the 10-mile
route.
"This year, we are making changes to create a more fun and festive finish
line,” Meyer-Goodwin added. “Instead of riders beginning at approximately
the same time, we are staggering the start times to have more riders
ending near the same time, in a congratulatory party of smiles, relief and
story-swapping.”
Lunch will be provided.
Participating sponsors include Maria Parham Health, Carolina GI Associates
PC, OmniPoint General Surgery, Nunnery-Freeman Barbecue, Spoke Cycles
and Henderson Fruit & Produce.

New Tech accommodating struggling learners
Warren New Tech High School and Teacher Michael Williams were recently
highlighted in the PBL (Project Based Learning) for Equity and Inclusion
because they took steps to intentionally create greater accessibility in
project-based learning experiences for their students with disabilities.
Steps they took included collaborative planning between special and
general educators in the initial design of projects, sufficient
accommodations to help students with disabilities access supports in the
implementation of projects, and explicit checkpoints in the life of the
project to ensure students were able to access underlying content that the
project is based on.

Energy Audits Offer Competitive Edge Rural Businesses Benefit from USDA Program
> Looking for ways to cut 10% or more from your energy bills?
> Seeking understanding how to better manage utilities?
> Interested in input from an experienced energy advisor?
Small businesses, from farms to convenience stores to machine shops, can
discover ways to reduce their electric bills with a USDA - sponsored energy
audit. Waste Reduction Partners’ team of energy professionals can help you
achieve significant energy cost savings, often by implementing no-
cost/low-cost energy saving recommendations. WRP has conducted over
150 small rural business and farm energy audits across the state, with over
$3 million in energy savings identified. Learn more...
What is an energy audit?
An energy audit provides a financial analysis of techniques that a business
can employ to reduce their energy bills and become more efficient.
How does this help my business?
WRP engineers typically identify no- and low-cost energy efficiency
measures that can save 10 to 20 percent of a business’s total energy bill.
“We found that the energy assessments were extremely beneficial,” states
Jim Clarke, V.P. of Manual Woodworkers and Weavers in Spindale, N.C. The
energy audits are conducted by Waste Reduction Partners; a unique
statewide technical team of highly experienced engineers.
What does an audit cost?
The audit is provided at no-cost to qualifying rural small businesses with
support from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and co-sponsorship from
the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
How do I request an audit?

Warren County to Recognize Our Historic Communities with Signs Local Community Fundraising Underway
Warren County’s Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) is moving forward
with its program to preserve County history. Permanent signs will
eventually be placed across the county in communities contributing to the
history and development of Warren County. To date four pilot
communities have been designated: Ridgeway, Russell Union,
Arcola/Bethlehem and Soul City.
Citizens seeking to be included in this new effort are still needed to form
committees to research their communities’ history, select a roadside site
where motorists can pull over to read the sign and to raise funds for the
purchase of the signs (similar in appearance to the silver-toned signs
already in the county). The County’s Planning/Zoning and Code
Enforcement Department working in conjunction with the HPC, will select a
company to produce the signs similar to what is done for State markers
through the State Historic Preservation Office.
Signs have been researched to cost approximately $2000 and funding is
available to assist the Ridgeway, Russell Union, Arcola/Bethlehem and Soul
City in starting their respective efforts. Communities that raise the
necessary remaining funds would need to have checks written out
to Warren County General Fund and delivered/mailed to:
Warren County Planning/Zoning and Code Enforcement Department
Attn: Ken Krulik
542 West Ridgeway Street
Warrenton, NC 27589
Ken Krulik, Planning and Zoning Administrator, as staff to the HPC, shall
maintain records of funds collected and from which community. In an
earlier article he has said “In identifying the various communities with
these signs, those who visit our county and those who reside here can
learn more about its history and contributions as well as how these local
areas were formed. Through this new program, the HPC is working to
preserve and promote these communities as well as protect our county’s
cultural heritage.”
The signs will include the name of the community, historical information
such as when the community was established and why it is prominent in
Warren County’s history, the county seal, and the county’s tourism website
address, where additional information can be viewed. The HPC plans to
partner on the project with the county library, which can archive additional
historical information about the communities, such as genealogical research
and photographs.
Community members interested in participating or getting more
information may contact Ken Krulik at 252-257-7027, 252-257-3037, or

Grape Hill – A Historic Home Opportunity 1830’s Home in Wise Needs A New Location
We are still trying to find
someone to adopt and move
this historic Warren County
home. Here’s what they have
to say on the Preservation
North Carolina website
about Grape Hill: (you can
also see plenty of great
interior pictures here)
“Built during the agricultural
boom years of the 1830s,
Grape Hill is an unusual blend
of sophisticated interior
woodwork emblematic of
Antebellum Warren County architecture within an exterior of elegant
simplicity.
Architectural & Historical Information
Built for the Joshua Davis Jr. family near Locust Grove, the seat of his
parents’ plantation, it appears to be a simple two-story Federal-Adamesque
I-house, but on a much grander scale. Archival photographs show its
original entry porch was more Greek Revival in style with a pedimented
portico supported by a Doric entablature.
The tall five-bay façade with side addition accommodates two stories of
nine-over-nine windows, a molded box cornice, tall stone chimneys
stuccoed and scored to give a refined ashlar finish, all resting on a high
stone foundation under which is located a basement with summer kitchen
and workspace.
The double-leaf entry doors lead into a wide highly ornamented hallway
with tall marbleized baseboards, heavily molded door surrounds with
Grape Hill, Wise, 2017
bullseye corner blocks and a low wainscot. The stairway is located at the
back of the wide center hall and features a single-run stair with ogee
bracket ends and marbleized risers. The enormous main parlor shares
similar woodwork to the center hall including marbleized baseboards, low
wainscot with a heavy band creating a chair rail.
The highlight of the main parlor is a mantel which shares intricate detail
with some of the finest early houses in Warren County showcasing wide
molded engaged pilasters supporting a multi-paneled frieze topped by a
delicately carved lozenge band below the deep molded shelf. Both parlor
mantels were stolen years ago, but happily the mantel from the main
parlor was recovered and has been safely stored off site. The remaining
first floor rooms share more simplified versions of the parlor and center hall
woodwork such as a low wainscot, six-panel doors and a post-and-lintel
mantel with molded detailing in the side addition. Plaster walls and
beautiful wide board wood floors can be found throughout the house. The
former gabled rear porch located at the back of the center hall was
enclosed decades ago and includes a bathroom.
Second floor details are fine yet predictably more modest and include
simple paneled mantels, six-panel doors, chair rails, and simplified version
of the first floor stair that continues up to two large attic rooms. The
second story is also divided by a stair hall with one large bedroom on one
side and three rooms on the other side of the hall. Much original paint
remains on doors and trim (red and blue-gray).
Grape Hill has been vacant for many years and has been used for storage
for the surrounding farm. The house must be moved or it will be lost to
demolition. The house appears to be very sturdy, but will require a
complete rehabilitation once moved to its new site.”
See plenty of interior pictures at the Preservation North Carolina
website.

Need A Place To Board Your Dogs? Lickskillet Is Here The Next Best Thing to Having Your Dogs at Home!
For those of you with dogs, I understand your concerns with finding the
right place to board them when you head out of town. You want someplace
that will care for your dogs…keep them safe…keep them as happy as
possible…and ultimately not cost you as much as a family vacation. With
Christmas on the way now’s the time to find that place for your dogs.
When we first moved to Warren County 3
years ago, less than a month after
moving in we needed to find a place for
our 3 dogs to stay. A new friend
recommended Lickskillet Dog Grooming
& Kennels…well, being new to the area we
were a little unsure…UNTIL we met Andy and
Doreen. 10 minutes with them and we knew that our dogs would be in
great hands.
How do we know our dogs enjoy their stays at Lickskillet? Every time I get
their leashes and lead them to the truck their tails start wagging. And
when we pull into Lickskillet, they can’t wait to get out and see Andy.
Headed out of town for a weekend or longer? Give Andy and Doreen at
Lickskillet Dog Grooming and Kennels a call to reserve your space at 252-
257-5990 or visit their Facebook Page to see their great reviews! It’s
like leaving your dogs with family.

Historic Virginia Property for Sale on Kerr Lake: Long Grass Listed by Century 21 Country Knolls Realty
In 1785, Patrick Henry, the
Governor of Virginia, deeded
over 600 acres of land to George
Tarry. Not long after, the first
section of the Long Grass home
was built. Around the year
1840, the well-known area
architect Jacob Holt designed
and built the front section of the
home as it stands today. Around
1850, Holt was commissioned to
renovate the rear section,
creating the basic home that remained in the Tarry family until 1989.
By that time, the Tarry acreage had been parceled off and conveyed to
various family members and others, including the U.S. Government in the
taking of land to create Kerr Reservoir, leaving only sixty acres divided by
country road Epps Fork. The land lying north of Epps Fork was developed
into the popular Long Grass Shores residential subdivision, leaving 27 acres
lying south of Epps Fork as the grounds for the structurally sound and
livable Long Grass home. A few years later, the property was purchased by
the current owners who transformed it into a beautifully restored
masterpiece of history with modern conveniences.

“Discover History Worth Repeating” in Warrenton Historic Moment in Municipal Marketing and Collaboration
Discover History Worth Repeating is
up and running in Edenton, Halifax
and Warrenton. This program is a
unique collaboration of three historic
North Carolina towns coming together in
a joint effort to market and promote
themselves as connected tourist
destinations. Involving elected officials
and staff, the common thread among the
three towns is a strong core of history
and historic sites that are significant not
only to the state but to the entire nation.
On occasion it is important to repeat significant events of the past and each
town has examples to “Discover History Worth Repeating”. Edenton
with its Tea Party was home to a political protest organized by women in
response to the Tea Act, passed by the British Parliament in 1773. Halifax
with its Resolves was the site of the first official action by an American
Colony calling for independence from Great Britain. Warrenton, home of
the “first” architect of North Carolina, Jacob Holt, blended architectural
styles while sending his work force of sixty craftsmen to build colleges in
Raleigh, Oxford and Randolph County.
The passport tour leads visitors through the participating towns and are
stamped at each historic, merchant, or artisan location. Hands-on
activities in each town are tailored for kids of all ages: re-signing the
resolves in Halifax, building architectural elements in Warrenton and
cruising the bay where the Tea Party occurred in Edenton. Passport
holders share their experiences online and register for giveaways and
prizes.
