Acquisition• Normal operation – SHMS and AE• Automatic wire break detection• High SHMS speed trigger file operation• Stress analysis• Viaduct bearing monitoring function & structural computation (e.g. buckling)
Data Transfer• Conventional network (CAT6e, FO), DSC or SCADA (Modbus RS-232, RS-485 or TCP/IP) • Remote wireless networks (4G/3G enabled/Satellite broadband)
Data Storage• Local servers ASCI and SQL databases• Web based cloud data storage service
Data Analysis / Process• Noesis / SMS-R / SQL query
Data Visualisation• SCADA dash board interface / Web interface

Mistras AE and SHM System Verification
23rd June 2008- Unwrapping of cable and removal of circumferential wrap- 900mm wire wrapping removed from 1150mm to 2050mm above CB10- Shift finishes, workers leave site

23rd June 2008- Unwrapping of cable and removal of circumferential wrap- 900mm wire wrapping removed from 1150mm to 2050mm above CB10- Shift finishes, workers leave site- Mistras AEM system automatically detects wire break on 23/06/08 22:39:41hrs at 1151.17m
downstream, 1480mm from cable clamp CB10 towards cable clamp CB9D

24th June 2008- Inspection of unwrapped cable found additional wire broken 23R at 1420mm
from CB10 at 1151.11m on cable length
- Location verified to within 60mm of MISTRAS AEM system calculated location

Conclusion
• Acoustic Emission as SHM is a very effective technique for detecting hidden defects
• The AE application for wire break detection is very mature now, with Mistras detecting over 1,400 wire breaks (to date) over 93 cumulative years of monitoring
• When properly specified, installed and maintained SHM systems can be functional in excess of 20 years+
• AE and structural health monitoring is a powerful tool for bridge owners to assist in asset management and safe operations
