Kevin W. Concannon Kevin W. Concannon was nominated by President Obama and Secretary Vilsack and confirmed by the U.S. Senate in July 2009 to serve as Under Secretary for Food, Nutrition, and Consumer Services in the United States Department of Agri-culture. Food, Nutrition, and Consumer Services has principal responsibilities and

funding authority for Food and Nutrition Service (FNS), which serves 1 in 4 Americans, and has lead responsibilities for promoting healthful diet through the Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion.

Listen as the Under Secretary updates the audience on USDA, FNS and yes, the top CACFP Trend, the New Meal Patterns. It will be all about CACFP Trending.

Geri Henchy Geri is the Director of Nutrition Policy at FRAC. Geri is a member of the Institute of Medicine’s Committee to Review the Child and Adult Care Food Program Meal Re-quirements which has the task of creating nutrition standards to bring the meals served into compliance with the Dietary

Guidelines. Geri is the current chair of the policy committee of the American Public Health Association’s Food and Nutri-tion Section. She currently serves on the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Paperwork Reduction Task Force.

Ed Cooney

Edward M. Cooney became the Congressional Hunger Center’s (CHC) Executive Director on February 5, 2001. Prior to joining CHC, Ed was an anti hunger advocate at the Food Research and Action Center and Connecticut Legal Ser-vices. From September 1997 to January 2001, Ed held two senior positions at the United States Department of Agriculture as Deputy

Administrator for Special Nutrition Programs and Special Assis-tant for Nutrition to USDA Secretary Dan Glickman. Ed was a member of USDA’s Senior Executive Service, the government’s top management team. As an advocate or nutrition program administrator, Ed has worked with allied groups on every major child nutrition and Food Stamp (SNAP) bill since 1977.

Dr. Jeane e Betancourt Dr. Betancourt is the Senior Vice Presi-dent for Community and Family Engage-ment at Sesame Workshop. She directs all Sesame Workshop community en-gagement initiatives reaching children and families in most need as well as edu-cators and service providers who make a

difference in their lives. She designs these research-based, bilingual initiatives to impact children’s school readiness, health, and social and emotional well-being. She maintains a partnership network that enables the development, integra-tion, and delivery of these initiatives. Prior to joining Sesame Workshop, Dr. Betancourt directed several educational pro-grams for the child care professionals at the Institute for Urban and Minority Education, Teachers College, Columbia University and other organizations serving at-risk children. She is a licensed bilingual speech and language pathologist and educational therapist. Dr. Betancourt has served on sev-eral national Boards aimed at impacting at-risk children. Dr. Betancourt has degrees in Speech and Language Pathology, Bilingual Reading, and an Ed. D in Special Education.

Breastfeeding-Friendly Child Care, Replication and Scale-up – A Train the Trainer Approach Presented by Kathleen Anderson, MEd., CLC; Project Director, Breastfeeding-Friendly Childcare.

Kathleen is the Director of Community Breastfeeding at The Carolina Global Breastfeeding Institute (CGBI). Her work focuses on coordinating project and partnership activities, including the implementation of a statewide Breast-

feeding-Friendly Child Care training curriculum and facili-tation of a national collaborative on supporting breast-feeding in child care. Kathleen also conducts trainings and one-on-one education related to the CGBI mission and coordinates the CGBI newsletter (Breastfeeding Ex-clusive). Attendees will receive a New Manual courtesy of the CCFP Roundtable. Breastfeeding-Friendly Child Care Training of Trainers Early care and education standards and best practices emphasize the importance of supporting breastfeeding families in the early care and education setting. The Breastfeeding-Friendly Child Care (BFCC) Training of Trainers provides background information about human milk and breastfeeding, as well as experience with train-ing activities that are part of the BFCC Early Care Provid-er training curriculum, through online training modules and an in-person workshop. During the in-person work-shop, participants will receive the BFCC Trainer’s Guide and Tool-Kit, which includes the BFCC Early Care Provid-er Training power point and electronic copies of the ma-terials for the early care and education setting.

For example, Minute Menu HX can help you determine which meals should be reviewed based on claiming pat-terns and can help Monitors vary the timing of unan-nounced reviews so that they are unpredictable by the Providers. We’ll also examine the features of the new Review App for phones and tablets that will allow instant data-entry by monitors and reduce paperwork. Paula James, Director of the Contra Costa Child Care Council, Child Health and Nutrition Program. Working for over 30 years to improve the eating and activity environments in early care settings. Her program has devel-oped tools to assist child care settings in assessing their nutrition and physical activity environments. Actively involved in advocacy for the Child and Adult Care Food Program and public policy efforts focused on prevention of childhood overweight. Paula serves on the board of the National Child and Adult Care Food Program Forum, chairs the Child Care Food Program Roundtable, serves on the Steering Committee of the CA Strategic Alliance. A member of USDA Paperwork Reduction Task Force and the USDA CACFP Technical Assistance Task Force. Jodi Kuhn, Director of the Subsidy Food Program for Knowledge Universe, Jodi oversees the Child and Adult Care Food Program participation of more than 800 KinderCare Learning Centers across 34 states. Collec-tively, these centers serve more than 2 million nutritious meals and snacks each month through the CACFP. Managing the largest private nationwide participant in the program, she has the perspective of working with many state agencies and sharing best practices across the country. Jodi serves as the Secretary for the National CACFP Forum Board of Directors, and participates on multiple national work groups including the USDA’s tech-nical assistance and guidance group, USDA’s paperwork reduction workgroup, and the NFSMI’s CACFP National Advisory Committee. Jillien Meier, Share Our Strength Program Manager Jillien joined the Center for Best Practices at Share Our Strength in April 2012. As a Program Manager, Jillien handles a portfolio of campaigns, oversees summer meals and school breakfast evaluations in Colorado; and helps plan and implement partner convening's, conference calls and other Center activities. Adding the USDA Summer Food Service Program for Children to your Sponsorship Robert Gray, Certified Internal Auditor In the past, many CACFP sponsors also administered the Summer Food Service Program for Children (SFSPC). Due to major audit issues disclosed, non-profits were excluded from the program but were eventually allowed to participate. This presentation will discuss the benefits and challenges of partic-ipating in the SFSPC. The presenter is a former audit manager with USDA-OIG, has extensive expe-rience with the SFSPC and the CACFP, and is a current board member of a SFSPC sponsor in process of adding the CACFP to its agenda. Breastfeeding Friendly Child Care Linda Simmons, CACFP Texas Department of Agriculture This workshop addresses strategies to assist child care facilities to offer support for breastfeeding mothers and babies. Child care centers/homes are one key environment to encourage and increase exclusivity and duration of breastfeeding. Institute of Medicine (IOM) provides guidance to encour-age and support breastfeeding mom’s and babies along with its recommendations for the new CACFP infant meal pattern. Attendees will take a self- appraisal questionnaire to evaluate their existing practices and current status with the requirements of a breastfeeding friendly designation. The tool is ideal to assess key areas of where improvements are necessary and how to prioritize those areas. As the children plant the seeds and care for the plants they can learn about life cycles, reciprocity, pa-tience, the scientific process, beauty, nature and seasons. As children prepare and cook the veg-etables they have grown they can learn: to hone math skills from simple counting to basic addition and subtraction of fractions; to make simple food science observations and predictions that will be made and tested; to develop an awareness of seasonal produce from the garden; to develop hand-eye coordination as they master basic mixing and measuring skills; to work cooperatively in small groups. When we create hands-on-learning from garden to classroom kitchen we are giving early learners the foundational knowledge of nutrient-dense eating that will help them to live healthier lives. Judith Kunitz, Chef Katrina Morkner Learn how our program is taking obesity off the menu through a newly implemented nutrient-dense/made-from-scratch food program. We are serving up whole grains, legumes, steamed and raw vegeta-bles and fresh fruits that children love! Participants will hear from our nutrition consultant who facilitat-ed the changes and the Head Cook who implemented these changes with kitchen staff. Our health ser-vices coordinator will discuss and provide handouts on the newly created child nutrition questionnaire and prevention nutrition & activity log as well as nutrition data that is captured and tracked to support good nutrition. Speakers will share stories of teacher and parent reactions and support of the new food program and plans to make the program sustainable. This workshop will showcase a new coaching and recognition program called Preschools Shaping Healthy Impressions through Nutrition and Exercise (SHINE), administered by the California Department of Education. Preschools SHINE child care sites implement optimal policies, and nutrition and physical elements that foster healthy habits during the early years of growth and development.
