CENTENNIAL CORNER

This coming Tuesday, August 11th our parish will experience an historic moment as ground will be broken at 9:30 a.m. for the renovation of the church’s entrance. How glorious a moment that will be as we all have waited prayerfully and patiently for this day to arrive. It’s a day that will be photographed, remem-bered and put into the history records.

Two weeks ago this column highlighted the laying of the corner-stone of our original church in July 1933 with the Rev. Joseph F. Rummel, bishop of Omaha, in attendance. The Perpetual Ador-ers three ring binders have once again provided us with another historical moment that occurred sixty-five years ago.

Written in an undated, yellowed newspaper article: “Saint Mary’s Parish, according to Fr. Robert A. Garvey, its pastor, is going to have a new church to meet its present-day requirements to say nothing of the future. The present church built in 1933 with one hundred fifty started bursting at the seams until Mass after Mass was added to take care of the hundreds who looked to Saint Mary’s for their religious life.” A campaign drive, de-scribed in the article as “short and snappy and in the four weeks before Christmas” was held with Fr. Garvey as honorary chair-man. He was quoted as saying “St. Mary ‘s has a great spiritual force as a result of around-the-clock perpetual adoration since April 1953”. However, the campaign was extended into the new year due to “proximity of the Christmas holiday season…”.

Pictured below are black and white photos of the 1956 ground-breaking. Another historic moment will be recorded Tuesday, this time digitally and in color, as “a great spiritual force” of parishioners’ prayers are answered. Fr. Garvey will be smiling down from above as we gaze upward in thanksgiving and praise.

Don’t forget St. Mary’s centennial golf tournament on September 4th at Tregaron, 1:00 p.m. Scramble (Shotgun) followed by din-ner at the Knights Event Center at 6:30 p.m. $80/each; a four-some is $320. We’re in need of players, hole sponsors [$150] and volunteers to help at either the tournament or at the dinner. Registration forms are available online or at the south entrance doorway. We’d appreciate registration forms no later than August 14th so we can plan accordingly.

The Rite of Christian Initiation is an invitation to “come and see” what our Catholic faith is all about: to learn and experience scripture, faith, prayer, and to form community. All of this leads participants to become a disciple of Jesus for life.

NARTHEX CONSTRUCTION CORNER

We are excited to begin reporting weekly on our Narthex construction. With a completion goal of December or Janu-ary, you should expect things to progress fairly quickly over the next few months. We will try to keep everyone up to speed on next steps in the bulletin each week. The bulletin deadline is Noon on Wednesday, so if plans change on Thursday or Friday of a current week, the update will be in the following week’s bulletin.

Ground Breaking Ceremony: Everyone is invited to the groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, August 11, 2020 at 9:30 a.m. We will meet in front of the east entrance to the church and ‘turn some dirt’. All are welcome to come and celebrate with us. Please wear a mask and practice social distancing.

After the Ceremony: RMR will begin setting up by putting up construction fencing along the perimeter of the north, south and east grassy areas of the church. Once the fencing is up we will not have access to those areas, so please do not enter the construction area at any time. When they are ready to close off access to our current entryway, they will put up plywood on both the current interior entryway doors and the parish center doors on the east side of the parish center.

The construction workers will be parking in the lot on the east end – please park on the west end of the parking lot as much as possible. The south door of the church will be the only door open to enter the church during construction.

It is a very exciting time with construction beginning. We ask for your cooperation in observing all signs and instruc-tions. We will be keeping you informed of what is going on with the construction as time goes on. Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

RE ADVISORY BOARD - A MINISTRY WHICH HELPS SHAPE RELIGIOUS FORMATION Due to the changes caused by COVID, we must look at the practices of Religious Education formation and look to our future. We must be sure that we are meet-ing the needs of our parishioners. We are asking for interested persons who would like to help make a difference with how St. Mary’s Parish children learn about the great love of Christ by developing Disciple leaders, encountering Christ, forming families and sharing faith. We have a progressive Religious Edu-cation Advisory Board and welcome new ideas and members. Contact Elizabeth at 402-291-1359 X 214 or [email protected].

FIRST COMMUNION Congratulations to all of our First Communion families who have received the sacrament this year. Our wonderful volun-teers have completed St. Mary’s tradition of making a quilt with all of the First Com-munion banners the children have worked on. It would have been on the altar for their First Communion. This year we will be displaying this beautiful quilt at the entrance of the church so that all will be able to enjoy and remember their own First Communion. When these children receive the Sacrament of Confirmation, this quilt will once again grace the altar. We ask that our parishioners keep these families and all St. Mary’s children in prayer during this time. If you have not scheduled your child’s First Communion, please contact the RE office for available dates.

Sunday, September 20 – 3:00-4:30 p.m.

Dear St. Mary’s Community,

We hope you are doing well and we pray that you’ve had a blessed and en-joyable summer despite the difficulties we are experiencing. We’re sorry we haven’t been able to interact with you more but we did enjoy the Fireside Chat with Fr. Del and it’s been a great joy to see a few of you at the Monday evening Mass each week.

We have had a good summer at St. Ber-nadette’s, primarily serving Masses and taking Spanish classes online. We’ve also been blessed to spend a lot of time with our families this summer, which has been a nice silver lining to all the cancel-lations and change of plans. As of right now, we are planning to return to Kenrick in mid-August to resume our theological studies. We are very excited to return to the seminary community and get back to in-person learning and formation again.

Thank you so much for your continued support, prayers and encouragement as we both discern God’s will and path for our lives. Please know of our prayers for you, your families and the St. Mary’s community. God-willing, we hope to see you when we return home throughout the year. Thanks and God bless!

DEAR FRIENDS,

School will be back in session August 17th. We intend to have in-person classes in the school building and will be wearing masks. We would like your help making 2 layer cotton masks for the children and adults. If you are inter-ested and like to sew, this opportunity is for you! We have some supplies available and a preferred pattern in both child and adult sizes. Pre-printed patterns and what fabric we have will be available for pick up beginning July 24th. The pattern is also available online at https://www.sewcanshe.com/blog/simple-step-by-step-tutorial-for-the-olson-mask-pattern.

Finished masks can be dropped off in the tote near the front door of the school or in the bin at the rectory. We would also be happy to distribute masks to others who need them if there is a need. Questions can be directed to the school at: [email protected].

Your help would be greatly appreciated! God bless all our St. Mary community. We are praying for all of you.

Many blessings, Trish Wallinger and the school staff

A WELCOMING SIGHT TO START A NEW YEAR

To start a new school year, oftentimes boys and girls get their hair trimmed for the first day. At St. Mary’s School it was the trees that got a trim. On Saturday, July 11th, volunteers were out tending to trees that surround our beautiful grounds. All twenty-two trees, not including the three large ones against the south wall of the school, were pruned. The cut tree branches were turned into wood chips and placed around the school grounds. Thank you Tim and Connor McGarry, John Clark, Ted Menzel, Zeb Crider, Alan and Christian Swiecicki and Doug Feagan for your precious time and volunteerism. The school and grounds committee could not have done it without you. Thanks for getting us closer to our goal of welcoming students and teachers back to our beautiful grounds.

OCP MISSALETTES FOR YOUR USE In an attempt to at least use the books that we paid for, Fr. Del has decided that we can offer books to those who find it comforting and/or necessary to read the readings along with the lector as they attend Mass. Here are the guidelines: 1. Books will be placed at the South entrance (without the jackets). 2. If you take a book, you must put your name on it and it cannot be left in the church. It is your responsibility to take it home with you and bring it back the next time you attend Mass. If it is left in the pews, we are obligated to throw it away.
