Greene Awarded as Exemplary by Healthy CPS

Nathanael Greene School has been awarded an Exem-plary Award by HEALTHY CPS. HEALTHY CPS is a campaign that promotes bringing health and wellness to communities and schools. Each year, schools may re-ceive up to four badges for each goal met within the health and wellness policy. The badges include informa-tion about chronic disease, instruction, learn well & health services. Greene's health and wellness commit-tee consists of community partners, staff, and parents. Together they work to create events throughout the year that promote health and well-ness values to our students. “There are many different aspects to promoting a healthy lifestyle” as quoted by our HEALTHY CPS Manager Jovita Flores, who has been working with Greene for nine years and is on her 12th year with the HEALTHY CPS campaign, "when we have parents involved, we are sending out a message to our children that we care".          Good habits and tools that can be shared is extremely important in helping schools create a positive and learning environment with our students. "Eating healthy helps my child concentrate in school and be able to learn better. I have also enjoyed receiving information from our nutrition workshops and being able to practice it at home" says one of our parents Maricarmen Diaz DeLeon who has been with the health and wellness committee for four years. “If we live a healthy lifestyle, our families will be able to as well,” says Leonor Ramirez, a parent on our health and wellness committee. Physical activity is another im-portant part of living a healthy lifestyle as stated by another parent committee member, Gabriela Vazquez.   Each year health and wellness committees select a healthy school champion, who works with our CPS HEALTHY manager to implement our health and wellness policy at Greene. Ms. Myrna Villafuerte, Greene's Assistant Principal has been taking the role as a healthy school champion, and working with parents to create positive events throughout the school year that promote a healthy lifestyle, as well as bringing nutritious workshops through our partnership with community organizations. "We would like to challenge our community to help be a part of a healthier lifestyle by joining their health & wellness committees at their schools," says Ramirez. "If we can get more parents involved and ex-plain the difference they are making by being involved, we can really make a difference in our communities.''   To learn more about the HEALTHY CPS schools campaign you can visit their website at https://cps.edu/oshw/Pages/HealthyCPS.aspx. Congratulations Greene!

MEMORARE Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine interces-sion was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, be-fore thee I stand, sinful and sor-rowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my peti-tions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen. ARV

Lipinski Helps Congress Pass Bipartisan Bill to Stop Illegal Robocalls

Congressman Dan Lipinski (IL-3) today helped the House pass the Pallone-Thune TRACED Act (S. 151) to bring much needed relief to Americans from abusive robocall practices. The bipartisan, bicameral bill will now be sent to President Trump for his sig-nature.   Last year, an estimated 47.8 billion robocalls were placed nationwide, an increase of 17 billion calls over the previous year. Illegal robocalls affect American life in increasingly harmful ways, from scams to defraud consumers to disrupting our health care system, and much more.   “Consumers in the Third District and across the country have had it with the daily barrage of abusive spam robocalls. Enough is enough,” Lipinski said. “I was proud to co-sponsor the House version of this legislation because it sets up a nationwide caller au-thentication system so consumers can again trust that the number they see on their caller ID is actually the person calling them. Our time is too important to be constantly bombarded with spam robocalls.”   The bipartisan Pallone-Thune TRACED Act also enables consumers to block unlawful calls in a con-sistent and transparent way, at no extra charge, and makes sure that law enforcement and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) have the tools, information, and incentives to go after robocallers that break the law. The bill allows the FCC to go after scammers the first time they break the law and extends the statute of limitations by up to four years in some cases, in order to give the FCC and law en-forcement agencies enough time to prosecute illegal robocallers. It adds an additional penalty for inten-tional violations of up to $10,000.   The legislation also requires the FCC to issue an annual report to Congress on illegal robocallers de-tailing its enforcement activities so Congress can make sure the robocalling problem is being ad-dressed. The FCC must also provide Congress with proposals for decreasing the number of robocalls through additional legislation.  Consumer groups and industry widely support the legislation, including Consumer Reports, AARP, the National Consumer Law Center, US Telecom, & more.

A New Guidebook that’s All About Family Fun

A new guidebook with 111 answers to the question parents ask themselves practically daily, “What on earth can we do with the kids today?”   Author Amy Bizzarri, a teacher and mother of two, opens a world of ideas for family fun in her newest guidebook: 111 Places for Kids in Chicago That You Must Not Miss. Each chapter includes a detailed de-scription of the place, location, hours, and suggested age ranges. The majority of the places are appropriate for children ages 3 through 12+. (Photographs in the guide by Susie Inverso).   “This book is my invitation to kids and parents to switch off the screens and go out to find the history and culture of our great city,” Bizzarri says. “Fun places and adventures galore are just waiting to be dis-covered.”   111 Places for Kids in Chicago That You Must Not Miss invites families to explore their city in a whole new way. “The key is to walk out the door together in search of adventures, and you’ll end up creating mem-ories that will last a lifetime,” says Bizzarri.
