The HOD’s visit was a courtesy call as a result of a slight disruption of lessons caused by the theft of water copper pipes in school. Mr Jabulani Nduli, Principal of Shakaskraal State Aided Primary School told the HOD that the cause of the disruption was due to the theft of copper pipes, resulting in learners having no access to clean water and toilets. The theft also affected the cooking of school meals for the school children. This hazardous situation made it difficult for teaching and learning to take place. Mr Nduli the Principal under the circumstances release learners while the Department of Public Works assessed the extent of the damage. Mr Nduli also contacted Siza Water, the company that supplies water in the area to assist in providing the school with clean water. Siza Water immediately came on board by also providing qualified plumbers to assist. The Head of Department in Education expressed his appreciation to the private sector for their efficient service. He requested the principal to urgently call a meeting with the local leadership, In the classroom, Nkosinathi SP Sishi [PhD], the Head of Department in Education with Mr Jabulani Nduli, Principal of Shakaskraal State Aided Primary School in a meeting the community and parents to assist in protecting the property of the school from theft and vandalism. He said it is obvious that the criminals reside in the neighbourhood. A neighbourhood watch in partnership with the South African Police Services would help curb future incidences. The Head of Department in Education on his way out to another engagement was met with more plumbers arriving to fast track the crisis. They were sent by the Department of Public Works. To ensure Teaching and Learning is taking place in the classroom, Nkosinathi SP Sishi [PhD], the Head of Department in Education in KwaZulu-Natal, conducted an inspection-in-loco at Shakaskraal State Aided Primary School in the North Coast on Friday, 18 May 2012.

The KZN Department of Education went the extra mile by granting 120 students with bursaries to enable them to study towards a post graduate qualification in order to improve the quality of School Librarians Service in the province.

The bursary enabled staff to study towards a Post Graduate Diploma in Specialised Education in the field of School Librarianship through the University of Zululand in the North Coast.

The bursary covered registration and tuition fees over a two-year period, which started in 2010. A total of 79 graduates completed their Post Graduate Diploma qualification and graduated this year.

In motivating the graduates he used the example of Dr Mzikayifani Barney Johnson Mthembu, General Manager in the Chief Directorate: Examinations, Assessment and Quality Assurance, who was also conferred with a Doctorate in Philosophy [Geography]

Dr Mthembu who happens to be a senior official in the Department is a role model when it comes to furthering his studies as stated by

the HOD, that it is never too late to learn (pictured below) who was also present at the graduation ceremony. ]
