SampleClinicalExplanationforSphygmomanometry:

1. Apatientmayreceivesphygmomanometrytotestforchangesintheirbloodpressurethatcouldoccurwithothostatichypotensioninwhichthereisnotimmediatecontrolofbloodpressureuponstanding.

2. Todayyouwillbereceivingatestcalledsphygmomanometry,alsoknownasabloodpressuretest.Thetestisdonebyplacinganinflatablecuffonyourupperarmandastethoscopeontheinsideofyourelbow.Theinflatablecuffisattachedtoanairpumpthatwillinflateandthenslowlydeflatethecuff,andabarometerthatmeasuresthepressureappliedtoyourarm.Iwillbeusingthestethoscopetolistentothesoundsproducedbybloodmovingthroughyourarteries.Youwillhavethistestdonewhilelayingdown,sittingupandthenstanding.Wewillbemeasuringthepressureinyourarterieswhenyourheartiscontracting,andwhenyourheartisrelaxedtogetthetwonumbersthatrepresentbloodpressure.Yourbloodpressurewillstaythesameinallpositionsifyouarenotsufferingfromorthostatichypotension,becauseyourbodywillimmediatelytakeactiontokeepyourbloodpressurethesame.Byexaminingthechangesinyourbloodpressureinthesethreepositions,thedoctorcandetermineifyouaresufferingfromorthostatichypotension.Thesphygmomanometrydatawillbeexaminedalongwithinformationonyourheartrateandbreathingactivity,todetermineyourbesttreatmentoptions.
