For HealthierPets, WatchTheir Weight(Family Features)
Obesity and beingoverweight are hu-man health problemsthat get a lot ofattention from doc-tors and the media. What hasnt gottenas much attention isthe fact that manypets are sufferingfrom the very same
problems. The As-sociation for PetObesity Preventionestimates that 88.4million U.S. dogs andcats - 54 per-cent -are overweight orobese. And that canlead to healthproblems such asarthritis, diabetes, heart disease andeven some cancers.
Many pet ownersarent aware thattheir pets are over-
weight. A study fromthe U.S. Food andDrug AdministrationsCenter for VeterinaryMedicine found that 22percent of dog ownersand 15 percent of catowners described theirpets as being normalweight, when theywere actually over-weight or obese.
Whats a little extraweight for your pet? Alot more than it is foryou:* Just two pounds ofextra weight on aChihuahua would beequivalent to morethan 60 additionalpounds on an adulthuman.
* Even just four
pounds too many on a10-pound Siamese catwould be equivalent toalmost 40 extrapounds on a human.
Signs Your Cat isOverweight:* Is it difficult to feelher ribs or spine?* Is it difficult to seeyour cats waist?* Is her abdomensagging?
Does your cat:* Often appear tired
and lazy?* Hesitate when jump-ing onto furniture?* Have difficulty groom-ing properly?* Have matted hair onthe back or tail area?* Resist playing games?
Signs Your Dog isOverweight:* Is it difficult to feel hisribs or spine?* Is it difficult to seeyour dogs waist?* Is his abdomensagging?
Does your dog:* Often appear tired andlazy?* Lag behind on walks?* Pant constantly?* Need help getting in
the car?* Resist playing games?* Bark without gettingup?
What You Can Do:Adjust some of yourfeeding habits to helpyour dog or cat loseweight or maintain ahealthy weight.* Avoid feeding tablescraps and snacks.* Stick to the recom-mended daily feedingguide. You may want toweigh out the amount at
the beginning of theday, to avoidaccidentaloverfeeding* Divide the dailyallowance intoseveral meals for themost efficient weightloss.* Keep your pet inanother room whenpreparing or eatingyour own meals.* If you have severalpets, feed themseparately.* Dont leave anyfood lying around. You also need tomake sure your pet isgetting adequateexercise.Talk to Your VetIts important that youdiscuss your petsweight and nutritionwith your vet. Askquestions such as:* What is the targetweight for my pet?* What are the health
risks if my pet isoverweight?* What exerciseprogram should Ifollow to help my petreach target weight?* Is there atherapeutic foodyou can recommendfor my pets health?* How much andhow often should Ifeed my pet?* What appropriatetreats are recom-mended for my pet?* How many treatscan I give?* Can you providewritten instructionsor a booklet forweight manage-ment?* What can I do tohelp my pet getmore exercise? For more tips andtools to help keepyour pets at ahealthy weight, visitwww.petfit.com.
HOW TO SELECT THE PERFECT CHRISTMAS TREEBy: Colleen Cavagna, Cornell Cooperative Extension
Community EducatorWe are in the Christmas season and a great holiday
tradition is picking out the best tree for your home. Let megive you some tips on what to look for when either buying froma retail lot or going to a cut-your-own tree farm.
Both Retail and Cut-Your-Own Tips: Whether you arebuying from a retail lot or cutting your own tree, there are afew things you should do before getting everyone into the car.
1. Measure the ceiling height of your room in which the treewill be displayed. Remember, when you are outside the treewill look small against the sky as a backdrop. Dont buy a 12tree for an 8 room unless you plan on trimming it; use thepruned branches as decorations (garland or wreathes).
2. It isnt just the height of the room you need to measurebut also the width where the tree will be displayed. Most treesare trimmed at an 80% taper which means a 10 tall tree willbe 8 wide at the base. You dont want people to have to brushby the tree, knocking off ornaments or tinsel.
3. What decorating theme are you using? What style of treedo you like? Some species have more open foliage, stifferbranches or longer needles.
White pines have a beautiful form, however they donthold up heavy ornaments well. They are used in garland andwreaths due to their long needles.
Frasier fir has a nice triangular shape, holds its needleswell and has a pleasing aroma.
Douglas fir is a very popular tree with very fullbranches.
The Noble fir has stiff branches, good for heavyornaments, garland or decorations.
Concolor fir branches look less sharp than other firs andhold its needles well.
Most Spruces have poor needle retention; however theBlue Spruce has good needle retention and that blue-greencolor some adore.
Retail Lot Tips:1. If you are selecting a tree at night, make sure the lot is
well-lit.2. Ask how fresh the trees are; were they all delivered once
at the beginning of the season or does the retailer get fresh cuttrees each week. Fresher cut trees will last longer.
3. Test the fir trees by taking a needle and sharply bendingit, it should snap crisply like a fresh carrot. Pine however has adifferent indicator because they are more fibrous than firs. Apine needle should NOT break; unless they are overly dry.
Avoid these!4. If you are strong enough, do the stump test, grab the
center truck and lift the tree a few inches and allow it tothump on the ground. If a large amount of needles fall off, thetree is either older than you want or dried out, pass that oneby. If you arent strong enough to lift the tree for a stump test, place your hand at the base of a branch (where it meets thetrunk) and slowly pull your hand up the branch and see howmany needles fall off. Also, make sure there isnt discoloredfoliage or a musty odor. If none of the trees on the lot lookfresh, go somewhere else.
Cut Your Own at a Tree Farm Tips:Remember, the Christmas trees purchased from local
Christmas tree farms are as fresh as a Christmas tree can get. Dress for the weather, wear boots, mittens, gloves (for the
person cutting or holding the tree) or warm clothing if it iscold. It might take longer than you think to make that criticaldecision. If Rover comes, please dont let him mark otherpeoples trees.
Saws are needed to cut your own tree. Check ahead of timeto see if they are provided.
Ask about pricing before you cut, some farms sell by thetree, others sell by the foot.
Be careful when tromping through the trees. Snow maycover up holes from trees that were dug up and sometimesstumps are left standing well above the ground, creating a triphazard. Nothing takes the fun out of selecting your tree faster
than getting a boot full of freezing water after stepping in ahidden hole.
Select trees with straight trunks. Keep in mind that pineswill usually have, at least, some crook in their trunks. You mayhave to trim off bottom branches later to accommodate yourstand.
See if the farm provides a shaking or blowing service toshake out the oldest needles, providing you with a perfectlyclean tree to start the season.
Cutting the tree is a two person job; the cutter lies on theground to cut at the base of the tree while another personholds the bottom of the limbs up. The person that is holdingthe tree should tug lightly on the tree so the cutters sawdoesnt bind or fall on them.
Bring the tree back to the processing area to be measured(if sold by the foot), cleaned and netted. Netting makestransport easier and getting the tree into the house is a breezewhen it is netted.
Many people question whether they should buy a fake treeor get a real one. The National Christmas Tree Association hasthis to say, It is much better environmentally to use a natural
agricultural crop and recycle it after the holidays. RealChristmas Trees are a renewable, recyclable, natural productgrown on farms throughout North America. Unfortunatelymany people have the misconception that Christmas Trees arecut down from the forest. Real Christmas Trees are grown ascrops, just like corn or wheat, and raised on a farm. Once theyare harvested, new seedlings are planted to replace harvestedtrees. These would NOT have been planted if trees hadnt beenharvested the previous year. Fake Christmas Trees howeverare a non-renew able, non-biodegradable, plastic and metalproduct most often made in overseas factories.
Make getting your Christmas tree a family event and atradition you can continue throughout the years. Have a greatChristmas Season! fb

MCKEAN 4-H CLUBSThe Smethport 4-H Robotics Club held its first meeting in
the Hamlin Memorial Library Conference Room. 15 youth, aged 7-12, attended. Ann Dunkerton, Penn State ExtensionEducator for 4-H and Youth Development, led the meeting, which began with pledges to the American and 4-H flags. Someof the youth were new to 4-H, so a sample agenda was followedto introduce them to the program. The club will be using the 4-H curriculum, Junk Drawer Robotics, to learn to think likescientists and do the work of engineers. The task for this firstmeeting was to sort Legos according to criteria established bysmall groups. Some sorted by form (color or size), while otherschose function (wheels, type of vehicle, etc). The meeting endedwith a relay game using robot claws to transport various sizedballs from one end of the room to the other. The club plans tomeet the first Thursday of the month; at the next meeting(January 3), the members will hold club officer elections. Theproject topic will be robotic hands.
McKean 4-H Clubs are part of Penn State Extensionsyouth development programming. Traditional clubs are open to

What day is it for you?One of my nieces celebrated her 4th
birthday a few years ago. She and hermom were going somewhere togetherin their van shortly after her birthday. And all of a sudden, she says to hermom, Well, its day two.
What do you mean, Its day two? the mom asked. And my niece replied, Its day two after my birthday,
Mommy! She reminds me of my grandfather in his later years. If
he was 86 years old, he would say, Im in my 87th year. Both my niece and my grandfather celebrated their
birthdays by looking forward,
excited not just by the dayitself, but by the prospects of celebrating life in all of itsgoodness the entire year.
Now contrast that attitude with the one you get from alot of people around their birthday. Some people I knowdont want anyone to acknowledge their birthday muchless celebrate it. They are offended by cards , cakes, andgifts. Others get depressed.
Every day of life is a gift. Celebrate each day regardlessof when your birthday is as you listen to life and make apositive life.

GAME COMMISSION URGES PARTICIPATIONIN CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT
Harrisburg- Pennsylvania Game Commission officials areurging wildlife enthusiasts to join the tens of thousands ofvolunteers throughout the United States in the AudubonSocietys 114th Annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC), whichwill take place Dec. 14 through Jan. 5.
Bird enthusiasts, armed with binoculars, bird guides andchecklists, will head out on an annual mission - often beforedawn - to make a difference and to see nature firsthand, saidDan Brauning, Game Commission Wildlife Diversity Divisionchief. Each year, volunteers brave snow, wind, or rain, to takepart in the Christmas Bird Count, and they have madeenormous contributions to bird conservation continent-widewhile doing so.
The data collected through this effort - which is thelongest-running wildlife census to assess the health of birdpopulations - allows researchers, conservation biologists, andother interested individuals to study the long-term health andstatus of bird populations across North America. Whencombined with other surveys, such as the Breeding BirdSurvey, it provides a picture of how the continents birdpopulations have changed in time and space over the pasthundred years.
Local counts will occur on one day between Dec. 14 andJan. 5. Volunteers can pick the most convenient circle, orparticipate in more than one count. There is a specificmethodology to the CBC, but everyone can participate. The
count takes place within Count Circles, which focus onspecific geographical areas. Each circle is led by a CountCompiler, who is an experienced birdwatcher, enablingbeginning birders to learn while they assist. Also, those wholive within the boundaries of a Count Circle can even stay at
home and report the birds that visit their backyard feeders, orjoin a group of birdwatchers in a local field.
In either case, if you have never been on a CBC before, your first step is to locate and contact your local CountCompiler on Audubons web site to find out how you canvolunteer, Brauning said. Audubons web site iswww.audubon.org/Bird/cbc
Brauning also noted that there are two changes to theCBC that participants should know about. First, the CBC isnow a free program. Audubon will no longer charge the $5 feeof field participants. Second, to minimize the effects of the lossof fee income for Audubon, American Birds will no longer beprinted on paper and mailed to participants, and Audubon willmove to an online delivery of the summary results of the CBC.
Brauning noted that the CBC makes an indispensiblecontribution to conservation because it monitors bird speciesthat spend winters in Pennsylvania.
Some of these species are much easier to count ormonitor in winter because their breeding ground is so far northin areas where there are few people or roads to give access tohabitat, Brauning said. An example of this is the rusty
blackbird that migrates from the boreal taiga forests ofCanada and Alaska to the southeastern United States inwinter. Pennsylvania is on the northern edge of its winterrange, and some CBCs do count this declining wetlandsongbird. Hawks also are more easily counted in winter andour state is a good place to see several hawk species in winter, including red-tailed hawks and rough-legged hawks.
Brauning also noted that the CBC is a good way tointroduce beginners to bird identification. It is much easier tofind birds through your binoculars when there are few leaveson the trees to hide them from view.
There are fewer bird species around in winter than atother times of year, so it is easier to learn bird speciesidentification, Brauning said. Also, birds are easier to spotbecause the trees lack the leaves that hide birds from youreyes in spring and summer. In fact, many birders got started inthis hobby in winter in a car with more experienced birders ona Christmas count. CBC allows for mentoring in the field. Forbest results, spend some time scouting your area. Rather thanspending a day in the car, get out and walk the back roads andland where you have permission to go birding.
A wide variety of birds are observed in winter countsincluding an assortment of songbirds and our upland gamebirds, which are mostly residents. It is a challenge, forinstance, to find a ruffed grouseon a CBC in many circles.People go out of their way to
find a wintering woodcockaround spring seeps, in wetpastures, or along streams.Birders learn more abouthabitat associations and thevalue of cover and food sourcesto birds, such as winterberry, rose hips and sumac. Bluebirds, hermit thrushes, and Americanrobins are often found in grapearbors, sumac patches, or otherplaces where wild fruits arelocated.
To view instructions onhow to search for a circle andsign-up for an open count, visitthe Game Commissions website (www.pgc.state.pa.us) andclick on Wildlife in menu barat the top of the homepage, andthen choose the Bird and BirdConservation and selectChristmas Bird Count under
the Enjoying Birding list.Information also can be obtain-ed from Audubon SocietysChristmas Bird Count web site(www.audubon.org/Bird/cbc), oron the Pennsylvania Society forOrnithologys web site(www.pabirds.org).

Over 40 years ago my father started our farm and
now I work it with my two sons. I pay them a
reasonable compensation package and handle the
managerial decisions myself. I thought everything
was fine until I learned my sons were planning on
leaving the farm. I didnt know what to do until my
wife read about FarmNet and suggested we call.
Consultants came to our farm and met with
everyone individually before getting us together as
a team. Ill be honest - we worked through a lot of
difficult issues. Now, we have regular meetings and
are in the process of developing a transfer plan and
new business structure to allow our sons to build
equity. This was all done at no cost to us.
