COA Executive Director’s Comments Fall is upon us, and I just love everything about it… the smells, cooler temperatures (sweatshirt weather), football, beautiful fall colors, apple cider (you cannot forget the fresh doughnut!), and Halloween, of course! While everything might look and feel a little different this year, I hope that you find a way to safely enjoy all of these things as well. Growing up as a fire fighter’s daughter, and now being a fire fighter’s wife, I also think of fire prevention when I think of October. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has sponsored Fire Prevention Week™ every year since 1922 during the week of October 9th in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire. During Fire Prevention Week™, children, adults, and teachers learn how

to stay safe in case of a fire. Firefighters provide lifesaving public education in an effort to drastically decrease casualties caused by fires. In a fire, mere seconds can mean the difference between a safe escape and a tragedy. Fire safety education isn’t just for school children. Teenagers, adults, and older adults are also at risk in fires, making it important for every member of the community to take some time every October during Fire Prevention Week™ to make sure they understand how to stay safe in case of a fire.

To increase fire safety for older adults, the NFPA offers the following safety tips:

Keep It Low If you don't live in an apartment building, consider sleeping in a room on the ground floor in order to make emergency escape easier. Make sure that smoke alarms are installed in every sleeping room and outside any sleeping areas. Have a telephone installed where you sleep in case of emergency. When looking for an apartment or high-rise home, look for one with an automatic sprinkler system. Sprinklers can extinguish a home fire in less time that it takes for the fire department to arrive.

Sound the Alarm The majority of fatal fires occur when people are sleeping, and because smoke can put you into a deeper sleep rather than waking you, it´s important to have a mechanical early warning of a fire to ensure that you wake up. If anyone in your household is deaf or if your own hearing is diminished, consider installing a smoke alarm that uses a flashing light or vibration to alert you to a fire emergency.

Do the Drill Conduct your own, or participate in, regular fire drills to make sure you know what to do in the event of a home fire. If you or someone you live with cannot escape alone, designate a member of the household to assist, and decide on backups in case the designee isn't home. Fire drills are also a good opportunity to make sure that everyone is able to hear and respond to smoke alarms.

Open Up Make sure that you are able to open all doors and windows in your home. Locks and pins should open easily from inside. (Some apartment and high-rise buildings have windows designed not to open.) If you have security bars on doors or windows, they should have emergency release devices inside so that they can be opened easily. These devices won't compromise your safety, but they will enable you to open the window from inside in the event of a fire. Check to be sure that windows haven't been sealed shut with paint or nailed shut; if they have, arrange for someone to break the seals all around your home or remove the nails.

Stay Connected Keep a telephone nearby, along with emergency phone numbers so that you can communicate with emergency personnel if you're trapped in your room by fire or smoke. For more information, go to www.nfpa.org.

Medicare Part D Open Enrollment During the Medicare Part D 2019-2020 Open Enrollment, the Commission on Aging served between 400-500 people. We were very fortunate to have had a very competent group of volunteers, along with COA employees, to help meet the needs of the older adults of Isabella County. This year’s Open Enrollment will appear much different, due to the current COVID-19 pandemic. At this time, our office is currently closed to the public, and is continuing to operate with an emphasis on remote work for many of our employees. Returning volunteers are on hold to safely limit the amount of people coming in and out of our COA building. We will continue to take calls and provide information on Medicare Part D; but, will be extremely limited on the amount of people we will be able to assist this year. For the safety of all, we are planning to answer most Medicare Part D questions over the phone. We strongly encourage you to contact Medicare directly at 1-800-Medicare (1-800-633-4227) or go to their website at: www.Medicare.gov to review your plan coverage. The dates for Open Enrollment are October 15th-December 7th. The Commission on Aging staff has always prided ourselves on being a great resource to the community, therefore we will continue to provide assistance to the best of our abilities, over the phone, during this trying time. We thank you for your patience and understanding.

Mission Moments

While taking the time to reflect on the last couple of months, I have realized that although the world as we know it has changed, it still has so much to offer. Community spirit can lift our soul and bring joy into our everyday lives. When the first few weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic hit, we saw neighbors singing in harmony and social media sharing images of our beautiful land. We saw pictures of clearer skies and water, decreased pollution and reduced carbon emissions. It has us asking ourselves, what can we do as a community to make the world a better place. We saw our local businesses step up to offer shopping hours designated for older adults and those medically disabled. We see schools offer free breakfast and lunch for all students, ensuring proper nutrition so that they can grow and thrive. I’ve seen families come together to spend more quality time working on new recipes and family activities. Here at the Commission on Aging, we have had volunteers designate countless hours making masks. We have staff making weekly calls ensuring increased socialization. Staff have also put together activities such as drive through root beer floats and volunteer recognition events and have taken a “virtual approach” to different classes being offered. We understand that caregiving can be difficult and the Caregiver Trainer and Support Specialist has resumed virtual support groups and is also in the process of finalizing a Fall Caregiver Training which will be held virtually in November. Our Case Managers have been available yearlong to identify needs and help to develop care plans, often connecting clients with available services and resources. In addition, they offer ongoing monitoring of services to ensure that the individual’s needs are being met. When interviewing participants during a recent survey for the In-Home services program, we heard individuals state how pleased they were with their Case Managers and In-Home staff. One individual stated “The usual helper takes her job to her heart and we just love her!” Another claimed “I feel like she is family, but very professional.” If you take anything from this article, please “Look for something positive in each day, even if some days you have to look a little harder.” There are beautiful people among us and we are surrounded by a strong community. Uniting the two and offering love and support is how we will get through this year and the years to come.

MI Attorney General Warns of Apple Tech Scam LANSING Recent media coverage of an Apple iPhone scam has highlighted the need to remind Michiganders again to be cautious of tech-support scams. Attorney General Dana Nessel is reminding residents to beware of bad actors who may be posing as employees offering tech support for major companies like Apple or Microsoft. The recent media report indicated a Michigan woman was contacted by a scammer who told her that her mobile device required a security update and that he could assist with the process. The victim followed the caller’s instructions and unknowingly gave him remote access to her phone, and he then transferred $1,000 from the victim’s bank account, according to police. Some tech-support scams may begin with a phone call from a real person, while others may be initiated with a robocall. The Attorney General’s office has an example of such a call on its website.

Those who are contacted by an unsolicited caller or receive an email from an unknown source offering tech support and seeking remote access to a computer or other electronic device should hang up the phone or delete the email. Complaints of tech support scams, robocall and other consumer protection-related issues can be filed online with the Michigan Department of Attorney General. Unwanted calls can also be reported to the Federal Trade Commission online or by calling 877-FTC-HELP (877-382-4357).

Month of Remembrance November is traditionally a month of remembrances. We remember Veterans, loved ones who have gone before us, and those we are thankful for. A Friend is Only a Phone Call Away! With the current social distancing and the colder months ahead

of us, it is especially easy to feel lonely and long for a friend on the

other end of the line. The Isabella County Commission on Aging offers

a FREE Friendly Caller service to Isabella County older adults and

their families. The Friendly Caller program is available to any older

adult who would like or benefit from a scheduled telephone call. Calls

can be temporary while recuperating from an illness or calls can be

arranged on a permanent basis around your schedule. To sign up for the

Friendly Caller Program, please talk with your Case Manager or call

Kelly Herrmann, Gold Key Volunteer Coordinator, at (989) 772-0748.

A trained Gold Key Volunteer or Staff Member will make

regular telephone contact with a program participant. If the older adult

does not answer his/her telephone, the Volunteer will contact COA staff

who will try to reach an established emergency contact. Emergency

services (9-1-1) may be contacted if necessary.
