As we move into April, spring has officially started along with the 4th quarter of the school
year. It appears that the difficult weather pattern that started in January and went through
the beginning of March has begun to change as we have had some nice weather recently.
March definitely came in like a lion and appears to be going out like a lamb. The snow
disappearing has brought some new challenges as bus routes and activities have had to be
adjusted due to the flooding that has taken place throughout the district and the surrounding
area. Hopefully we can get into a weather pattern that brings us sunshine and warmer
temperatures to finish out the school year.
2019 Drivers’ Education: The Oldham-Ramona School District will be offering Drivers’ Education to students who will be turning 14 years old before January 1, 2019. The class will begin on Tuesday, May 28th and will end on Monday, June 10th. Class will begin at 8:00 a.m. and will end at 11:00 a.m. with driving to follow after the class time. Mr. Koster will teach both the classroom and driving parts of the class. Students are required to complete 30 hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours of driving time. The cost for the class and driving time is $225. Please contact the school at 482-8244 for more information. Legislative Session is Over: The 2019 South Dakota Legislative Session has come to a conclusion with there being a few bills yet for Governor Noem to decide whether to sign or veto. There were a large number of bills that were introduced during this past legislative session with many of them involving education in some form. As usual, one of the major issues facing public schools dealt with the amount of funding that schools would receive. The legislature approved a 2.5% increase for state aid in general education. An update of the bills that affect K-12 education can be found at on the ASBSD website: http://asbsd.org/index.php/services/billtracker-2/ Every Kid, Every Day Michael Fischer, Superintendent

The Ant and the Grasshopper:
Aesop’s fables are short stories with big meanings, the story of the ant and grasshopper is no different. In a field one summer's day a Grasshopper was hopping about, chirping and singing to its heart's content. An Ant passed by, bearing along with great toil an ear of corn he was taking to the nest. "Why not come and chat with me," said the Grasshopper, "instead of toiling and moiling in that way?" "I am helping to lay up food for the winter," said the Ant, "and recommend you to do the same." "Why bother about winter?" said the Grasshopper; "we have got plenty of food at present." But the Ant went on its way and continued its toil. When the winter came the Grasshopper had no food and found itself dying of hunger, while it saw the Ant distributing every day corn and grain from the stores they had collected in the summer. Then the Grasshopper knew: It is best to prepare for the days of necessity. (Story taken from:
http://www.taleswithmorals.com/aesop-fable-the-ant-and-the-grasshopper.htm.) Over the next few weeks, students in the middle and high school will begin setting up their class schedule for next year. These classes are like the Ant’s corn, which prepared it for necessity, survival, and life. Granted, many students are unsure of what their future looks like, but this is no reason to emulate the Grasshopper. As all of us know, some winters are worse than others. What does it hurt to be over prepared like the Ant? I highly encourage all of the students to take classes that challenge them and prepare them for an uncertain future. Challenging does not always have to mean more work, sometimes it is a class that gets us out of our comfort zone and helps us become even more well-rounded individuals and citizens. After all, the Ant was so prepared he was able to help his fellow ants.
March Highlights/Kudos:
March started out with the eighth grade students successfully completing their National Assessment of
Education Progress on March 5. This test compares our students with students from around the nation. Next, students
participated in Tri-School Band on March 12 in Rutland. Mrs. Misar stated. “Dr. Wallace was able to bring out the
musician in all of the students and prepared an amazing concert! Students worked hard and played their hearts out. It
is so much fun to see their growth!” Parent teacher conferences were on March 21. The Dakota Players Children’s
Theatre was here the week of March 25-29, with two wonderful performances on the 29. Finally, after being snowed
out, the National Honors Society was able to host their annual blood drive. Thank you to all those who donated.
Athletic Notes:
