If this Craftsman Weedtdmmer is used for commercial or rental purposes, this warrantyapplies for only 90 days from the date of purchase.
This Warranty does not cover:• Expendable items which become worn dudng normal use, such as rotating lines,
belts, air cleaners and spark plug.• Repairs necessary because of operator abuse or negligence, including bent

Warranty service is available by returning the Craftsman Weedtdmmer to the nearestSears Service Center in the United States. This warranty applies only while this productis in use in the United States.

WARNING: This tdmmer is equipped with an internal combustion engine and shouldnot be used on or near any unimproved forest-covered, brush-covered or grass-covered land unless the engine's exhaust system is equipped with a spark arrestermeeting applicable local or state laws (if any). If a spark arrester is used, it should bemaintained in effective working order by the operator.In the state of California the above is required by law (SecHon 4442 of the CaliforniaPublic Resources Code). Other states may have similar laws. Federal laws apply onfederal lands. A spark arrester for the muffler is available through your nearest Searsservice center (See REPAIR PARTS section of this manual).
Theoperationofanytrimmercanresultinforeignobjectsthrownintotheeyes,whichcan result in severe eye damage. Always wear safetyglasses or eye shields while operating your tdmmer or performinganyadjustments or repairs. We recommend a wide vision safety maskover spectacles or standard safety glasses.
I. GENERAL OPERATION
• Read, understand, and follow allinstructions on the machine and in themanual before starting. Be thoroughlyfamiliar with the controls and the properuse of the machine before starling.
• Do not put hands or feet near or underrotating parts.
• Keep all parts of your body away frommuffler and spinning line. A hot mufflercan cause sedous bums.
• Only allow responsible individuals, whoare familiar with the instructions,tooperate the machine.
• Stay away from breakable objects, suchas house windows, auto glass, green-houses, etc.
• Clear the area of objects such as rocks,toys, wire, bones, sticks,etc., whichcould be picked up and thrown by thespinning lines.
• Be sure the area is clear of otherpeople before tdmming, particuladysmall children and pets. Stop machineif anyone enters the area.
• Wear appropriate clothingsuch as along-sleeved shirt or jacket. Also wearlong trousers or slacks. Do not wearsheds.
• Do not wear loose clothing which couldget caught in this equipment.
• Do not operate the machine whenbarefoot or wearing open sandals.Always wear work gloves and sturdyfootwear. Leather work shoes or shortboots work well for most people. Thesewill protect the operator's ankles andshins from small sticks, splinters, andother debds, and improve traction.
• Do not pull machine backwards unlessabsolutely necessary. Always lookdown and behind before and whilemoving backwards.
• Do not operate the machine withoutproper guards, plates or other safetyprotective devices in place.
• See manufacturer's instructionsforproper operation and installation ofaccessories. Only use accessoriesapproved by the manufacturer.
• Never use blades, wire, or flailingdevices. This unit is designed for linetrimmer use only. Use of other accesso-ries or attachments will increase the dskof injury.
• Stop the rotating trimmer head whencrossing gravel ddves, walks, or roads.Wait for the cutting lines to stop rotating.
• Stop the engine (motor) whenever youleave the equipment and allow it tocool, before cleaning, repaidng orinspecting the unit. Be sure the tdmmerhead and all moving parts havestopped.
• Operate only in daylight or goodartificial light.
• Do not operate the machine whileunder the influence of alcohol or drugs.
• Never operate machine in wet grass.Always be sure of your footing: keep afirm hold on the handle and walk; neverrun.
• If the equipment shouldstart to vibrateabnormally, stop the engine (motor)and check immediately for the cause.Vibration is generally a waming oftrouble.
• Always wear safety goggles or safetyglasses with side shields when operat-ing machine.

II. SLOPEOPERATIONSlopesareamajorfactor related to slipand fall accidents which can result insevere injury, All slopes require extracaution. If you feel uneasy on a slope, donot tdm it.
DO:
• Tdm across the face of slopes: never upand down. Exercise extreme cautionwhen changing direction on slopes.
• Remove obstacles such as rocks, treelimbs,etc.
• Watch for holes, ruts, or bumps. Tallgrass can hide obstacles.
DO NOT:
• Do not tdm near drep-offs, ditches orembankments. The operator could losefooting or balance.
• Do not tdm excessively steep slopes.• Do not trim on wet grass. Reduced
footing could cause slipping.
II1. CHILDREN
Tragic accidents can occur if the operatoris not alert to the presence of children.Children are often attracted to the machineand the tdmming activity. Never assumethat children will remain where you lastsaw them.
• Keep children out of the trimming areaand under the watchful care of anotherresponsible adult.
• Be alert and turn machine off if childrenenter the area.
• Before and while moving backwards,look behind and down for smallchildren.
• Never allow children to operate themachine.
• Use extra care when approaching blindcomers, shrubs, trees, or other objectsthat may obscure vision.
IV. SERVICE
• Use extra care in handling gasolineand other fuels. They are flammableand vapors are explosive.- Use only an approved container.- Never remove gas cap or add fuel
with the engine running. Allowengine to cool before refueling. Donot smoke,
- Never refuel the machine indoors.
- Never store the machine or fuelcontainer inside where there is anopen flame, such as a water heater.
- Move away from fueling site beforestarting engine.
• Never run a machine inside a closedarea.
• Never make adjustments or repairswith the engine (motor) running.Disconnect the spark plug wire, andkeep the wire away from the plug toprevent accidental starting.
• Keep nuts and bolts, especially trimmerhead and engine bolts, tight and keepequipment in good condition.
• Never tamper with safety devices.Check their proper operation regularly.
• Keep machine free of grass, leaves, orother debds buildup. Clean oil or fuelspillage. Allow machine to cool beforecleaning or storing.
• Stop and inspect the equipment if youstdke an object. Repair, if necessary,before restarting.
• Do not change the engine governorsetting or overspeed the engine.
• Clean and replace safety and instruc-tion decals as necessary.

2. Cut down two end comers of cartonand lay end panel down flat.
3. Remove all packing materials.4. Roll trimmer out of carton and check

The engine speed is controlled by athrottie located on the side of the upperhandle. Fast positionis for starting andnormal tdmming. Slow is for light trimmingand fuel economy. Stop is for stopping theengine.

TRIMMER HEAD DRIVE CONTROL
Yourtrimmer is equipped with a trimmerhead ddve control bar which will requirethe operator to be positioned behind thetrimmer handle to operate the trimmer.• Tdmmer head rotation is controlled by
holding the tdmmer head control bardown to the handle.
• Trimmer head rotation will stop whenthe control bar is released.
TO ADJUSTTRIMMING HEIGHT
ACAUTION: Stop the engine and watifor all moving parts to stop. Disconnectspark plugwire from spark plug andplace wire where it cannot seine incontact with plug.The height of cut can be set to six (6)different positions ranging from 1-1/2inches to 3 inches. Recommended cuttingheight for the average yard is 2 inches.1. To adjust tdmming height, push in the
locking plate tab and move tdmmerhead up or down to desired position.
2. Release tab and be sure head islocked into one of the six (6) heightpositions.

4. Wait one minute to allow oil to settle.Insert and tighten dipstick, thenremove it to check oil level.

_;iLWARNING: Expedence indicates thatalcohol blended fuels (called gasohol orusing ethanol or methanol) can attractmoisture which leads to separation andformation of acids during storage. Acidicgas can damage the fuel system of anengine while in storage. To avoid engineproblems, the fuel system should beemptied before storage of 30 days orlonger. Drain the gas tank, start theengine and let it run until the fuel linesand carburetor are empty. Use fresh fuelnext season, See Storage Instructionsforadditional information. Never use engineor carburetor cleaner products in the fueltank or permanent damage may occur.A CAUTION: Fill to bottomof gas tankfillerneck. Do not overfill. Wipe offanyspilled oil or fuel. • Frequentlyclean the undersideof thetdmmer to remove any grass buildup.Keep top of engine around starterdearand dean of grass clippingsand chaff,This will help engine air flow and extendengine lIfe. See =TO REMOVE ENGINECOVER" in the Maintenance section ofthis manual.
• For best results and longer lasting line,use the ends of the line to do the cutting.This is easily done by moving slowlythrough very thick and heavy weeds.
• Use the left side of tdmmer whantdmming along fences, walls, flowerbedsand other such objects.
• If trimmer lioes heeame tea short, it willtake longerto completethe job. Iftdmmer linesare wornto less than half
their original length,they should bereplaced. See "TO REPLACE TRIMMERLINE" in the Maintenance sectionof thismanual,

TRIMMERUNEFor best results, replace trimmer lineswhen they have worn to half their odginallength. Use .155 inch diameter tdmmerline. Cut new tdmmer line length to 18-3/4inches. After new line is installed ontrimmer head, check all lines so they donot vary more then one (1) inch in length.This is important to make sure the trimmerhead is balanced and will not vibrateabnormally.AWARNING: Use only the specifiedtrimmer line. Do not use other matedalssuch as wire, string, rope, etc. Wire canbreak off during tdmming and become adangerous missile that can cause seriousinjury.
TO REPLACE TRIMMER LINE
1. Disconnect spark plug wire from sparkplug and place wire where it cannotcome in contact with spark plug.
2. Remove worn trimmer line from linecarrier plate.
3. Fold new, cut to length, trimmer line inhalf and insert folded end throughcarder plate opening to back side ofretainer clip.
4. With folded end of line at back side ofretainer clip, pull line outward untilline is fully seated under the retainerclip.
5. Repeat on other side of carder plate.6. Check all lines to be sure they are the
same length.7. Reconnect spark plug wire to spark
plug.

LUBRICATION
Use only high quality detergent oil ratedwith API sen/ice classification SF-SJ.Select the oirs SAE viscosity gradeaccording to your expected operatingtemperature.
SAE VISCOSITY GRADES
NOTE: Although multi-viscesity oils(5W30, 10W30 etc.) improve starting incold weather, these multi-viscosity oilswill result in increased oil consumptionwhen used above 32°F. Check yourengine oil level more frequently to avoidpossible engine damage from runninglow on oil.Change the oil after every 25 hours ofoperation or at least once a year if theunit is not used for 25 hours in one year.Check the crankcase oil level beforestarting the engine and after each five (5)hours of continuous use. Tighten oil plugsecurely each time you check the oillevel.

4, Wipe off any spilled oil from tdmmerand side of engine.

AIR FILTER
Your engine wiU not run properly and maybe damaged by using a dirty air tilter.Replace the air filter every 100 hours ofoperation or every season, whicheveroccurs first. Service air cleaner more
often under dusty conditions. Do notwash air filter,

1. Remove the air filter by tumingclockwise to the stop and pull awayfrom collar.
2. Remove filter from inside of cover.3. Clean the inside of the cover and the
collar to remove any dirt accumula-tion.
4, Insert new filter into cover,5, Put air filter cover and filter into collar
aligning the tab with the slot.6, Push in on cover and turn counter-
clockwise to tighten.

MUFFLERInspect and replace corroded muffler asit could create a fire hazard and/ordamage.
SPARK PLUG
Replace spark plugs at the beginning ofeach mowing season or after every 1013hours of operation, whichever occurs first.Spark plug type and gap setting areshown in =PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS"in Maintenance section of this manual.CLEANING
IMPORTANT: For best performance,keep tdmmer free of built-upgrass andtrash. Clean the underside of yourtdmmer after each use.
ACAUTION: Disconnect spark plug wirefrom spark plug and place wire where itcannot come in contact with the sparkplug.• Turn trimmer on its side. Make sure air
filter and carburetor are up. Clean theunderside of your trimmer by scrapingto remove build-up of grass and trash.
• Clean engine often to keep trash fromaccumulating. A clogged engine runshotter and shortens engine life.
• Keep finished surfaces and wheelsfree of all gasoline, oil, etc.
• We do not recommend using a gardenhose to clean trimmer unless theelectdcal system, muffler, air filter andcarburetor are covered to keep waterout. Water in engine can result inshortened engine life.

CLEAN UNDER ENGINE COVER
Clean under engine cover before eachuse, or more frequently in heavy cuttingor dirty conditions. Engine cover screenand engine air intake screen must bekept free of dirt and chaff to preventengine damage from overheating.Be sure engine is cool before cleaning.1, Unscrew knob on top of cover.2. Lift cover up and away from engine.

cover.2. Lift cover up and away from tdmmer.

4. Turn trimmer on its side with carbure-tor and fuel cap up.
5. Remove the two (2) screws onunderside of trimmer secudng thedebds shield.
6. Slide the debris shield rearward andremove.
7. Remove belt from engine pulley oncrankshaft.

8. Remove belt from trimmer head pulley.9. Note the position of the control cable
and idler retum spdng, then removeidler assembly from chassis andremove belt and idler from trimmer.
10.Remove belt from idler assembly byremoving bottom belt keeper and idlerpulleys.
11.Assemble new belt, idler pulleys andbottom belt keeper to idler bracket.Tighten pulley bolts securely.
NOTE: Be sure belt is inside top beltkeeper on idler assembly.
12.Position belt and idler assembly intrimmer, reconnect idler spring andassemble idler to chassis.
13.Install belt around trimmer head pulleyand engine pulley.
14.Replace debds shield and tighten thefour (4) screws securely.
15. Replace chassis cover and tightenscrew securely.
Always use Craftsman replacement partsto assure proper fit and long llfe.

Your engine speed has been factory set.Do not attempt to increase engine speedor it may result in personal injury. If youbelieve that the engine is running too fastor too slow, take your unit to a Sears orother qualified service center for repairand/or adjustment.
CARBURETOR
Your carburetor has a nonadjustable fixedmain jet for mixture control. If your enginedoes not operate propedy due to sus-pectad carburetor problems, take your
unit to a Sears of other qualifiedservicecenter for repair and/or adjustment.IMPORTANT: Never tamper with theengine governor,which is factory set forproper engine speed. Overspeeding theengine above the factory high speedsetting can be dangerous. If you thinktheengine-governed high speed needsadjusting, take your unit to a Sears orother qualified service center, which hasproper equipment and experience tomake any necessary adjustments.
