*LITANY Melany Crawford

One: God offers us grace, the gift of unmerited love, welcoming us to a future we cannot yet see. All: We respond with our committed presence to God’s incredible love. One: God gives us the Spirit of prayer to surround and sustain us through every season. All: We offer our hope-filled anticipation for all that God will yet do. One: Together we honor the faithful leadership of those who have gone before us; we celebrate the present as

God chooses us and uses us today; and we open through faith to God’s dream for all that will yet be, by God’s grace. Let us pray…

*UNISON PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Gracious God, often we are awed and frightened by new possibilities. Forgive us when you call us to understanding and engagement with our world and we are afraid to follow. Forgive us when we trust familiar daily patterns and faces. Forgive us when we fail to believe that you plan abundantly for our tomorrows. Amen

ANTIPHONAL READING FROM THE PSALTER Clergy, Cantor, and Congregation

Antiphon: Congregation may join the cantor in singing the antiphon.

Psalm 84 Jill A. Truax

Cantor and Congregation One: How lovely is your dwelling place, O LORD of hosts! My soul longs, indeed it faints for the courts of the

LORD; my heart and my flesh sing for joy to the living God.

Cantor and Congregation One: Happy are those who live in your house, ever singing your praise. Happy are those whose strength is in

you, in whose heart are the highways to Zion. They go from strength to strength; the God of gods will be seen in Zion.

Cantor and Congregation One: For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. No good thing does the LORD withhold

from those who walk uprightly. O LORD of hosts, happy is everyone who trusts in you.

Cantor and Congregation

RESPONSE One: May God who commanded light to shine out of darkness enlighten our way today. All: Amen

READING FROM THE HEBREW SCRIPTURES (Chapel) Rev. David W. Johnson (Sanctuary) Rev. Holly H. Adams

One: God whispers through sacred texts a message to us all. All: We listen with our hearts open and our spirits awake.

Malachi 3:1-4

See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the LORD whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight - indeed, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts. But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears?

For he is like a refiner’s fire and like fuller’s soap; he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, until they present offerings to the LORD in righteousness. Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the LORD as in the days of old and as in former years.

RESPONSE One: These words do not remain in a book or on a pulpit. All: May God’s Sunday words change our weekday lives.

*HYMN OF DEVOTION “Be Now My Vision” SLANE

READING FROM THE GOSPEL Stephen M. Higgins, Moderator

One: Hear the good news of God with us in Christ. All: Speak Lord, for your people are listening.

Luke 2:22-40

When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, (Mary and Joseph) brought (Jesus) up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord…Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:

“Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.” And the child’s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him.

There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped there with fasting and prayer night and day. At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.

RESPONSE

One: We hear the Gospel as good news for our lives. All: We claim the Gospel as good news for the world.

SERMON “Called from the Future” Rev. Dr. Anna V. Copeland

“There was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, righteous and devout… There was also a prophet, Anna, who never left the temple,

but worshipped there with fasting and prayer night and day, praising God.”… Luke 2 (excerpt)

Joy, there’ll be joy, there’ll be joy, joy, joy, joy, joy, There’ll be joy, there’ll be joy in the morning. There’ll be joy on that day, There’ll be joy,

There’ll be joy on that day, with the light of dawn, the dark is gone, There’ll be joy, joy, joy.

There’ll be peace, there’ll be peace evermore, There’ll be peace evermore, Ev’ry heart and voice will then rejoice,

There’ll be peace, peace, evermore, And the glory, glory, glory of the Lord will shine, will shine,

And the glory, glory, glory of the Lord will bring the truth divine, There’ll be love, there’ll be love and forgiveness ev’ry where,

There’ll be love ev’rywhere, and the way of the Lord will that day be restored,

There’ll be love, sweet love ev’rywhere.

There’ll be joy, there’ll be joy, there’ll be joy, joy, joy, joy, joy, There’ll be joy in the morning, there’ll be joy on that day, With the bright dawn, night gone, there’ll be joy, joy, joy!

There’ll be peace and contentment evermore, evermore, There’ll be peace and contentment evermore, Ev’ry heart, ev’ry voice will together rejoice,

there’ll be peace, peace, peace. And the glory, glory, glory of the Lord will shine, will shine,

and the glory, glory, glory, of the Lord will bring the truth divine.

There’ll be love and forgiveness ev’rywhere, There’ll be love, there’ll be love ev’rywhere, And the way of the Lord will be restored.

There’ll be love and forgiveness, there’ll be peace and contentment, There’ll be joy, joy, joy, joy, joy!

MISSION MINISTRY

MISSION WATCH: INDIAN RIVER HABITAT FOR HUMANITY is part of a global, nonprofit housing organization operated on Christian principles that seeks to put God’s love into action. Habitat provides simple, decent, affordable, energy efficient homes through purchase and renovation of abandoned and/or previously owned homes, new home construction, and neighborhood revitalization projects. Community Church mission dollars help people find a home. Beginning next Saturday, February 8th, Community Church will participate in a home build on the second Saturday of each month. Stop by the mission table for more information and to sign up.

GLOBAL PRAYER PARTNERS: MEXICO. Abi Fate serves with Melel Xojobal, Mexico. Though the official job title is “educadora del calle,” or “street educator,” Melel Xojobal prefers to use the term collaborator, “colaboradora” or “acompañante” (accompanier) to describe what we do. This emphasizes the collaborative nature of our work. We do not teach children, but rather work alongside them in the fight for their right to a safe, happy, and free life. In her first six months working with children in the markets of San Cristóbal, she reports, “I have certainly learned much more than I’ve taught. I have learned responsibility and dedication from older sisters and brothers patiently watching their younger siblings, without complaining or losing focus. I have learned tenderness from the fist bumps, hugs, and kisses on the cheek when I arrive and leave the markets. And I’ve learned patience and acceptance as I speak to them in my imperfect Spanish. The children giggle and correct me when I use the wrong verb tense, and constantly teach me new words, without a hint of judgment.” Prayer: God of love, today, in our beautiful and broken world, we pray for softness. In this world where gentle is often synonymous with weak, and where unfeeling is equated with strength, you bless the poor, the meek, and the merciful. We pray for Mexico, and we pray that we might be good neighbors to our sisters and brothers here – in word, action, and politics. We pray for Melel Xojobal, and that each and every child that comes through this organization feels strong and protected. We pray for the educators that work tirelessly and selflessly to empower and support the children and adolescents of San Cristóbal and the surrounding communities. And we pray that we might really listen to and learn from the children around us, whose voices are tender and too-often silenced. Amen

Meet our Interim Senior Minister

Rev. Dr. Anna V. Copeland

The Rev. Dr. Anna V. Copeland comes to us from three large UCC churches where she served as Senior Minister for nearly three decades: in Colorado, in the Chicago area, just north of Boston in York, Maine, and most recently as Pastor in Residence in San Miguel, Mexico. She graduated with a Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology from the University of Nebraska, a Master of Divinity from Yale University Divinity School, and a Doctor of Ministry from Chicago Theological Seminary. Through worship, teaching and writing, she seeks to equip people of faith to think theologically about the world in which we live, to follow the Way of Jesus, and to share God's grace, mercy and peace with all God's people.

Together with her husband Dr. Ellis Copeland, Anna Copeland founded The Copeland Institute of northwest Boulder County in Colorado, a retreat center for deep faith work. She also has served as Trustee for The Chicago Theological Seminary, adjunct faculty for the Chicago School of Professional Psychology, and as a Trustee for The Fund for Theological Education out of Atlanta.

Dr. Copeland has led international mission trips to Mexico, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Cuba, and faith journeys to Israel, Turkey, and Greece. Avocations for Anna Copeland include wilderness adventures such as a women's' trek in the Arctic Circle, mountain climbing, skiing and kayaking. And…she enjoys experiencing exceptional food and conversation that celebrate the feast of friendship and the feast of life.

The Copelands have five grown children and ten grandchildren. They are thrilled to be here in Vero Beach joining our church family. Please welcome them with the warm hospitality for which we are famous!
