St. Joseph Community News EVANGELIZING BY COMMUNITY
My gratitude and appreciation go out to all of you who helped organize our parish picnic last weekend – and to all of those who took the time to attend! It’s always a gift to spend time with you in an informal setting and to have events that seek to make St. Joseph a center of family life.
I find it remarkably significant that we have activities like our parish picnic. The culture that we live in increasingly imposes a deep isolation on people. We are increasingly dragged away from authentic communion, human interaction, and interpersonal relationships due to the idols that our culture has made of cheap entertainment (think Netflix), comfort as the highest good of life, a crazed work life that exhausts us to such an extent as to make us want to do nothing rather than vegetate on the recliner, a victim mentality that breeds fear of others, and social media that have replaced authentic, human communication with virtual communication.
The demographic group most affected by this societal trend, in my estimation, is my own Millennial generation. There is a painful isolation that I see in many of my peers that comes from the advent of technology. Now, please do not misunderstand me, I am a fan of technology and it is a great gift that I use daily (for example, as I write this article on my laptop in the air conditioning, I am quite content). However, technology demands discipline if we are to use it and still remain fully human and capable of interacting with other humans in a human way.
I recently spoke with a peer about the experience of eating dinner with family. In their family, while eating dinner together, everyone is on their cell phone and they have forgotten how to have normal, day-to-day conversations. That is both undisciplined and unhuman. My generation has a lot of potential – contrary to what many of its critics claim – however, that potential will never be harnessed without discipline, which is precisely what my generation most lacks.
I am not simply preaching from my soapbox here. This commentary has a profound connection to what we did last Sunday afternoon. Human beings were created to find fulfillment in having a relationship with God and in having fully human relationships with others. There is something immense that is lacking in the hearts of so many people – not just Millennials – we lack authentic human relationships. And when it is found, when we discover the joy of that human interaction, it awakens something within us. It opens us to a broader life.
When that authentic human relationship is discovered within a community of faith, it also opens a person to God. What seemingly insignificant events like our parish picnic offer is an opportunity to put people in touch with God by practicing the discipline of being present to one another, sharing life together, deepening our common bond in the faith, and satisfying that part of us that can never be filled by Facebook, Netflix, YouTube, or whatever movie marathon AMC is running on Sunday afternoon.
I am convinced, as we continue to try to expand and strengthen our parish life, that a sense of community is among the strongest forms of evangelization and reintroducing people to God. Thanks to all of you who make that a priority and who, by your human involvement in our parish, offer much more than you likely think to souls who are longing for relationship.
