Learning in the 21st century is undergoing radical change. All learners should have the confidence andcapability to learn all the time, wherever they are, whatever the setting.Our vision is that education needs to prepare learners of all ages to be able to take advantage of the re-sources available to them: the people, the places, the information and the tools that can help them to de-velop and enhance skills for learning and life.

The Birmingham CLC Service is the provider of choice forchange management activity, advisory, support and consultancyservices where ICT and learning technologies are aiding learn-ing, teaching and management of schools and education on thewhole. It is a powerful and effective institution helping to raisestandards and attainment in all Birmingham schools and beyond.It is integral to the function of the Transforming Education divi-sion, supporting the national Building Schools for the Future(BSF) and Primary Capital Programmes.We are experienced with working with different stakeholders toand cohere what factors influence progressive and impactingchange, and how best to harness them in a local and nationalcontexts.

LEARNINGAND TEACHING

The CLC Service planned,resource and delivered 20 internetradio station kits to PrimarySchools.

Staff and pupils were trained upon using the software andhardware and podcasts wereplanned into the schoolcurriculum. Inspired by theproject, pupils created work whichraised their literacy attainment.

History students at a SecondarySchool created and populated acollaborative online guide to aMedieval village. This wasresearched and developed by thestudents and involved higherorder thinking skills.

After the project, studentscontinued to update the websiteoutside school hours asindependent, motivated learners.

The CLC Service delivered aprogramme of e-safety trainingfor staff at a special school forpupils with severe physical anddevelopmental needs . Theresources and delivery werespecially adapted to meet thespecific needs of the users.The school staff were given theskills to deliver the training topupils and parents to make theinitiative sustainable.

Introducing ChangeChampions into a school is astrategy that the CLCService has successfullyintroduced to generatechange within anorganisation.These Change Championsare trained in the use oftechnology in the classroomand given appropriateresources. They then act asambassadors for the use oftechnology in education,meeting with otherchampions and cascadetraining.

Organisations need to embedtechnology to meet the needs oftheir learners and the needs ofthe country’s future. The CLCService has experience indelivering organisationalchange that has real andmeasurable impact.

Working with Youth Workersand Looked-After youngpeople, the CLC Service ran aseries of multi-media workshopson movie-making, podcastingand digital music creation.Projects were entered intonational competitions and,because the skills are embedded,the initiative is ongoing.

The CLC Service is workingwith Birmingham’s ICTprovider to roll out the use ofVirtual Learning Environments(VLEs) city-wide.Meeting with schools, the CLCService plans a vision for its usewith Senior Management andthen draft an Action Plan for itsimplementation.By careful planning and closecollaboration the VLE isintroduced into whole schoolplanning and embedded acrossthe organisation.The CLC Service is also able tooffer follow-up support andresource creation.

A major part of the CLC's role involves research and development in the future techno-logical trends in education. This allows the flexibility to explore and react to futuretechnologies and the value they bring with supporting pedagogy , aligning policy topractice and supporting sustainable future learning.

The CLC as a Regional Training Centre(RTC) for ap-ple technologies held the fist showcase in the UK ofthe ipads to educators in Birmingham. This is a vitalpart of our service working with technology providersto review and test new technologies and advise or-ganisations on making choices that are for purpose,sustainable and impact on engagement and attain-ment.

The CLC service is involvedin action research using DSlites to raise attainment inModern Foreign Languagesand Numeracy in primary andsecondary schools.

Wendell Gopaul is an educationalist with over ten years experience in the UKeducation sector. He currently works with the Transforming Education De-partment in Birmingham and has been attached to the City Learning Centrefor the past four years supporting in the development of ICT and learningtechnologies across the whole curriculum in primary, secondary and highereducation organisations in England.He is an experienced advisor with extensive training and a proactive ap-proach, energy, drive and a vision in supporting aspirations of building 21stcentury schools and learners alike.Wendell has also worked in education in Trinidad and has a firm grasp of thebarriers to learning that exist and the know how to help transform educationfor the future.

Stephen Fessey has taught for over ten years and is passionate about the ef-fective use of technology within all aspects of education. He works closelywith leaders and teachers from primary, secondary and higher education or-ganisations to help them embed learning technologies effectively and pur-posefully.

Stephen works directly with school Heads, Senior Management and the LocalAuthority advisory service to assess their needs and priorities and to developICT-rich projects to enhance attainment, engagement and ultimately enhanceresults of pupils. He models, develops and embeds 21st century learningstrategies using best ICT practice and latest cutting edge technology in orderto achieve the best outcome for all stakeholders.
