Preparing students for the

21st century economy

Today more than ever we need an education of excellence because of the changing society and all the changes it brings needs a skills populace expert and prepared to face all those Changes, but the reality is that our education systems are failing to adequately prepare all students with the essential 21st century knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in life, career and citizenship.

Three significant competitive realities underscore why our education systems are due for dramatic change:

1. The United States faces two student achievement gaps.

2. Fundamental changes in the economy, jobs, and businesses have reshaped workplaces and the nature of work

3. The fundamental changes in the economy, jobs, and businesses are driving new, different skill demands

What do educators need to know and do

If we want students to have 21st century skills is critical that teachers master the competencies that ensure positive learning outcomes for students. These include:

1. Successfully aligning technologies with content and pedagogy and developing the ability to creatively use technologies to meet specific learning needs,

2. Aligning instruction with standards, particularly those standards that embody 21st century knowledge and skills,

3. Balancing direct instruction strategically with project-oriented teaching methods,

4. Applying child and adolescent development knowledge to educator preparation and education policy,

5. Using a range of assessment strategies to evaluate student performance and differentiate instruction (including but not limited to formative, portfolio-based, curriculum-embedded and summative),

6. Participating actively in learning communities; tapping the expertise within a school or school district through coaching, mentoring, knowledge-sharing, and team teaching,

7. Acting as mentors and peer coaches with fellow educators,

8. Using a range of strategies (such as formative assessments) to reach diverse students and to create environments that support differentiated teaching and learning

9. Pursuing continuous learning opportunities and embracing career-long learning as a professional ethic

There are 5 themes and those are the following

1) Global Awareness• Use of the 21st century skills to understand global issues

and ,working together no matter your culture or language.

2) Financial, Economic, Business and Entrepreneurial Literacy

• Understanding the role of economy in the world, how to make wise decision with your economy and also how to be productive in the workforce.

3) Civic Literacy

• Knowing their rights and obligation of all citizens, understanding the local and global implications of civic decisions and understanding the government processes

4) Health Literacy• Understanding basic information about health to make

correct ,decision about their health and Understanding national and international public health and safety issues

5) Environmental Literacy • Understanding topics that impact the world like

population growth, population development, resource consumption rate and, also how it affect the environment
